Another life-sucker is the insane (but not uniquely Romanian, in all fairness) model of 9-hour work days, i.e. 8 hours slavery and 1 hour unpaid lunch break. Add then a commute of maybe 1 hour each way, along with morning prep, and it's suddenly a 12-hour day, five days a week. I don't know how people still manage to have a life ... I for one knock off at 7 pm, come home at 8 pm (9 if I have to do shopping before hand), manage to squeeze out 2-3 hours of me-time (dinner included) ... then off to bed, and 8 hours later the madness begins all over again.

It's more about the generation than the social background. People from wealthier families don't necessarily speak better English. Just a personal anecdote, but looking at my circle of acquaintances of a similar generation, I'm pretty sure all the people who speak better English than me grew up poorer. And it's not like I had the wealthiest upbringing of all the people I know, not even close.

the reason why so many romanians work in IT is because most jobs in Romania are paid really poorly, the average wage barely covers your rent and food expenses while working for an IT company based in a different country pays more as sad as this might sound, kids in highschool are pushed to pursue an engineering degree because it assures a decent wage, in comparison to other jobs if you want to pursue arts or basically anything that isn't medicine/law/engineering you're discouraged (unless you come from a wealthy family, which isn't very common) Bucharest is also a fairly decent city in Romania, you can't really figure out just really how poor this country is by only looking at some of its good parts (because trust me, there aren't many), even Bucharest can give you an insight into how much the system failed the people if you look at any other area than the downtown yeah, people here work in IT because it gives you a chance at a decent life

A loophole that many use is learning a foreign language (usually another Romance language, as it's often similar to their native Romanian and thus less hassle to learn) and slave away in customer service, because foreign languages are relatively sought after, and have the salary to match. Unfortunately, because so relatively many people have caught on to this, the positions have become relatively easy to fill, so the salary tends to go down again. :(

As for any other country people are split in two very particular groups, the capital plus few more cities and the rest of 80%. The interviews are taken around very specific points in Bucharest where usually are living or attending socially high positioned people - none of these are representative for Romania, actually Romanians are barely speaking a second language if not at all, most of them are struggling for a salary which at its maximum rarely touches a quarter of the average one in the west, the functional illiteracy is so spread that hardly one can do more than write his own name.
