ROMANIAN FOOD YOU HAVE TO TRY IN BUCHAREST!

Romanian food you have to try in Bucharest is scovergi, Romanian wine, mici, sarmale, mamaliga, and papanasi. In this Romanian food tour, we take you around Romania's capital city of Bucharest to try Romanian cuisine.
☕ Origo
Origo is a specialty coffee shop in Bucharest that serves up some of the city's best coffee. While here we both tried the iced coffee.
🌯 Scovergăria Micăi
Our next food stop was at Scovergăria Micăi to try a popular Bucharest street food. Scovergi is fried dough with lots of options for toppings. We went with a savory scovergi that had garlic, cheese, and sour cream.
🍷 Abel's Wine Bar
Next we went to Abel's Wine Bar to try Romanian wine. Our host did a wonderful job introducing us to different wines. He gave us some history about the wine also. The wine bar is cozy and a fantastic place to sample Romanian wines.
🌭 Caru' cu bere
Caru' cu bere is a Romanian restaurant that has beautiful stained glass and serves many traditional Romanian dishes. They also have Romanian folk dancing at 7:30pm. While here we ordered mici with fries and mustard dipping sauce. Mici are case-less sausages. We also got their home-brewed beer.
🍩 Manuc's Inn (Hanul lui Manuc)
The last place we visited was Hanul lui Manu. This Romanian restaurant has a large terrace and also has plenty of Romanian cuisine. Here we got sarmale with a side of mamaliga (polenta) and papanasi. Sarmale is a stuffed cabbage roll and papanasi is a doughnut topped with blueberries and sour cream. We also tried their home-brewed beer.

Come and visit Transylvania as well! For accommodation I highly recommend Count Mikes’ Estate from Zabala, King Charles’ Guesthouses from Zalan, and Count Kalnoky’s Guesthouses (their castle is a museum) from Miclosoara. The Mikes have two castles at their estate, the old castle in which the Countess and her family live in, and the new castle which functions as a hotel.

Eating sarmale with your hand is a punishable offence. There is only one exception to the rule that allows you to do that. You must sneak into the kitchen and must make sure that you are completely alone. You have to take them directly from the pot in which they were cooked and only before serving or after serving (usually half an hour after saying "I've had enough, I can't eat any more".)

The sarmale in Bucharest was so delicious! I think it's my favorite Romanian food.

You eat polenta with the main dish. Polenta takes place of bread. You wouldn't eat bread separately, so you shouldn't eat just polenta on its own. Think of it like corn bread. So a bite of polenta, and then a bite of sarmale. That's the way to go.

@@OneWayTicketAliHolly actually its better to have a shot of palinca before you take polenta together with sarmale and sour cream in the same bite, then finish it with a bite of a fresh or pickled green pepper and wash everything down with a red wine. Trust me i am romanian!

Polenta is more sophisticated than our mamaliga because it is made with cheese and ocasionally with butter and broth. Mamaliga is made with just water or milk and it is a great bread substitute. I totally understand why your espectations were higher 😅.

Actually, polenta means mamaliga. Traditionally, polenta is not made with cheese anywhere. It's just a local touch. As all staple foods, it is very simple. There are people who put cheese in it in Romania, too, but it's not traditional.

@@OneWayTicketAliHolly Gil Flash`s (La Cocosatu) and Terasa Obor. Cocosatu has great food across the board, but are considered the best mici in Bucharest, bar none. Terasa Obor is a close second and is VERY working class...but amazing taste and excellent prices. Since the Old Center bases their revenue on tourists the prices will always be jacked up there.
