I read some of the comments below, and I must inform You, as Romanian, that those food are not so heavy. Think it this way, most of the dishes they ordered, are "winter food". In Romania winter can be harsh, with temperatures below minus 30 ' Celsius. You need a lot of protein to survive such a day as an active person. Those are old and traditional food recipes, consumed by people like my grandfather who was a very active man. Try to imagine taking care of a farm and its animals during winter month, without modern technology, all the work was done by hand, feeding the animals, cleaning after them, in some regions of Romania even guarding them against wild life, we have more Wolves and brown bears then the rest of Western Europe combined. You can not do that without proper food. Each season has some preponderant types of food, for example during spring we eat a lot of fresh salads, fish, lamb ( lamb, strawberries, cherries season in Romania). In summer we eat a lot of vegetable soups, salads, fruits(water melon season for natural hydration) the the temperature can reach plus 40 " Celsius in the shade, so if You eat those winter dishes, You can just die of a heart attack. To understand the Romanian food You must understand the climate of Central Europe, a temperate Continental type, with huge variation in temperature between seasons. You just can not survive the winters with summer food or other wise.

They are quite good, but you have to make a reservation so they will know to prepare fresh food (because many ingredients can't be found in Japan so they need to be frozen).

I was about to write that, feast is not the right translation for "pomana". The word pomana means charity and it's coming from a Romanian tradition of serving free food to the people who attended a funeral, as a respect paid to the deceased. In this case as a "respect" paid to the pig 😅 Usually pomana porcului IS a feast, but not in a restaurant lol. You should try an accommodation in Maramureș, especially during winter, they serve the most authentic home made Romanian foods. Their pomana porcului is a feast indeed.

Hey, guys. First of all, welcome to Romania. Glad to see you're so interested in our culture and cuisine. And boy do you have so much to learn and taste.... I know it's too late now, but a local guide/friend would have been really practical to show you around and explain some of the stuff, like how to eat the tripe soup. I personally don't like the recipe and have never tried it, but I know it's supposed to be eaten with lots of sour cream (the recipe already contains it but some people like more of it), bread, and a jalapeno (because we're a spicy-loving nation). They all have a very precise purpose in creating the final taste experience. The sour cream mellows the garlic taste and the spicyness of the jalapeno, while the latter two mellow the taste of the tripe, which as you have pointed out, has a bitter aftertaste. Also, the cabbage in the sarmale should not be crunchy. That means that either the cabbage was not boiled enough or (more likely) that the leaves of the cabbage were too old when they were pickled and the fibers were too hard. Pickled cabbage should be soft and when used as an ingredient it should be even softer because it is also boiled in addition to being pickled. Sorry you couldn't taste proper sarmale. It would have knocked your socks off. Usually the best sarmale are made in a different province of Romania, Moldavia (not to be confused with the neighboring Republic of Moldova), particularly in the north part of Moldavia, also known as Bukovina. There you can find amazing painted medieval monasteries and a DOZEN different recipes for sarmale, ranging from vine leaf to pickled cabbage, from meat to mushrooms and carrots etc. I avoid the term sauerkraut because that describes a specific recipe made from pickled cabbage. The ingredient used in sarmale is pickled cabbage, which is fermented in salty broth. Yeah, that pork feast (pomana porcului) was not the best it could have been. That's usually what you get with tourist-oriented restaurants in the city center, which tend to offer watered-down versions of the traditional recipes because they know foreign tourists will not know the difference. It's a shame, because they're misrepresenting our amazing cuisine. Also, although the translation is somewhat accurate, the word feast is not the best equivalent for the local "pomana". Sure, it has the festive meaning because this was a dish made when people sacrificed their pigs for Christmas (pomana also means a funeral reception, like a mock feast for the dead pig with the pig's meat - we're cheeky like that), but the better translation would be pork extravaganza, because it's meant to be a dish that combines pork meat from various parts of the animal, each with its own flavor. So you see, it's not about the size of the platter, but the variety of the meat. Most of our dishes are a combination of salt and sour. We have some salty-sweet foods (inherited from the Saxon colonists in Transylvania), but we're mostly a salt and sour loving nation, with a separate sweet tooth reserved for deserts. But if you look closely, every dish is a combination of flavours, because we understood early on how to balance these flavours to make the perfect meal. Nothing should be just fatty or just sour. Everything is balanced either with some fresh onions or pickles to compensate for saltyness or grease, something fresh and sour to mellow spicyness and so on. We are a melting pot of cultures and cuisines and we took inspiration and improved the recipes from all our neighbors and even opressors. We took recipes from the Hungarians and Ottomans, from the Russian and the Tartars, and made them all better, more balanced. Our cuisine makes for a healthy diet thanks to these combinations of fats and fibers. Another key ingredient is moderation. All those foods are meant to be eaten in small quantities nowadays, because they were invented in a time when people needed massive amounts of calories to sustain intense physical effort like working the fields. These days, people working in an office have no need for meals that have 2-3000 calories in a sitting. BTW, that's definitely raspberry jam. One of the most popular jams we have. There's also strawberry, cherry, sour cherry, red currant, blueberry, plum, apricot, quince and lots of other jam recipes.

Peleș Castle is a must see.. I consider that castle being the most beautiful in Romania (its also surrounded by nature.. and tourists haha.. lovely place tho) Also the Cantacuzino Castle is close to Sinaia too.. its in Bușteni (7-10 minutes if you go with the train).. In the front of the castle is a place when you can also eat or drink (order) but the view is quite beautiful so yeah.. pretty nice place to eat and drink there too ;)

The cabbage it keep its crispyness becouse it is soggy gabbage means its keept in salt over the winter period most of times when temperatures are verry low, its ă tradition for us. Btw there are another type of sarmale used to cover the rice and meat with grape leaves , they are ă little bit dryer then the once with gabbage but i guess more tasty.

@@Theendlessadventure hello guys the way you describe our food make me instant to subscribe So...the sourness that you felt in soop usually romanian have it from " borş" we use it fior all the year is made from fermentation of ground grains mixture (like sweet corn etc)... +during the summer in different parts of Romania they use even green grapes or "corcoduse"
@KaTsy112
@KaTsy112 5 жыл бұрын
@@Theendlessadventure well, that also depends on the region of Romania. No, it's not made with "borș"(borsch as u probably know it) but with either lemon juice or vinegar. That "ciorba de burta". The rest of our broths are usually made with that "borș ", and/or sour cream. That sour cream that came with your broth, you add it in the bowl of broth, gives a creamier texture. The garlic, same. If you want it more garlicky, or spicy, just add that in your bowl. Most people here also eat that pepper along with the broth, though personally, i think my mouth is on fire afterwards, so i say no thanks. One more tipp, romanians never eat bread and polenta with the same dish. Polenta takes the place of the bread. Hope u guys had lots of fun, despite the weather.

Sarma is a Turkish origin word ( and good) used also in Greek as a food. It is a Mediterranean origin food spread out in Romania since the Fanariot age. Regardless the origin Romanians brought in their own touch ( Turkish don’t use pork meat but only rice and other vegetables which we do use it in the “Samale in foi de viță”. We eat them during summer time and lent/ fasting periouds as vegan dishes. Sarmale (STUFFED pickled Cabbage Rolls) became sort of “national” gastronomic stamp for the Romanian cuisine . Great Job! You can see that all Romanians here watching your video and living living abroad are literally drooling! ❤️🇷🇴💕

Dutch Nomad Couple funny you would say that. We are big Tour de France fans in Romania and every etappe the romanian comentators at Eurosport talk about a traditional food from the region the stage is going through and even give you the recipe and post photos on the website

Cool! Do you like to see TdF yourself? I think those commentators make it interesting to watch and listen to the TdF etappes!. But those dishes in Romania, gorgeous. We have Romania on our travel list for 2019. We talked to a Romanian guy in Mexico and he was so proud! It must be beautiful, especially that curved road you have. Nevertheless, we would love to visit Romania!

Dutch Nomad Couple Oh yes! I've been watching it with my dad since childhood. It is really thrilling. They joke around, analyse the route and which racer has a better chance, they give us pieces of gossip from the cycling world and even place bets on who they think will win the etappe. We have a beautifull country even though at times I feel it is not well advertised because of our past political aliegencies and my fellow countrymen whom currently live all around Europe. If you have the chance to come you should go to Transilvania or Maramures. The small cities in the mountains have an medieval flare to them because of the Germanic influence they had and also the villages are full of greens and blues, flowery fields, mountains going through the skies, endless forrests, hidden water streams and simple yet kind and inviting people

In the past Bucarest from Romania was called Little Paris.

@@bianca-zh1bb There are other cities that boasted that title, though. Still, having been to Romania twice, now, I must say I liked it very much, especially Sibiu. Brasov was too cold when I was there, but still a very nice city. Bucuresti wasn't that bad, but still a lot of grime, too. And I must admit it didn't help that I got my foot stuck in a manhole, because the manhole cover was a size too small. I had to drag myself to the station and it hurt for the rest of the trip. It made it almost impossible to do a tour in Sibiu, glad I bit through the pain.
