That factory does look like Howl's Castle. I was thinking the same thing. Regarding the taxi driver, I agreed with everything he said up until the communist part. It's true that we had no debts under Ceausescu at one point, but the cost of that was starving the population, limited/no electricity and heat. Many older people will tell you it was better during that period because of nostalgia and because that's all they knew all their life. The state "took care" of them and after the Revolution they gained so much freedom that it was overwhelming for some.

Older people do indeed tend to say that it was better back then (and not just in Romania but also in other FSU countries from what I've seen). I haven't been through what they have been through though so I don't question their opinion which is based on first hand experience. Of course I understand and agree with your perspective as well.

The problem is Geopolitical. All eastern European countries are (and were) behind the west, not because of "race" or "culture" but because of its geographic location (being invaded by the Ottoman Empire, Tatars, Russians, Mongols, Huns, etc). The US is (or was) the greatest power because it was protected by oceans (thus no internal war-damage and many top scientists came to the US safe space). Also, there's a famous curse of natural resource. The most obvious is having oil (and refusing to surrender it to a super-power).. No matter the particularities of each country, if you're not obeying the super-power's rules, for example the US' Capitalism, you are automatically at war with the US, thus you suffer embargo / economic isolation, thus the economy is doomed regardless of internal economy, and you'll also get foreign (CIA) agents planning a coup. Thus you're FORCED to have an anti-agents police ("Securitate" in the case of Romania) which has to inspect and thus terrorize the population. Even the US invaded people's privacy after 9/11.

Old people say that Ceausescu managed to pay all of Romania's debts but they also forget that it was also Ceausescu that created those debts in the first place. And the problem was that he invested the money in industrial giants that we're completely disconnected from the market demand and logistical possibilities of Romania at that time, in short, bad investments. The fact that a lot of industries fell after the revolution was that a lot of them we're not self-sustaining

The steel plant built in the late 1700s was outdated and similar in quality to what the Chinese produced only as much more expensive. Politicians managed everything badly and we the population did not understand the idea of the free market, even if we understood this idea we still could not compete in this segment with India and China but we would have understood that we have to readjust our industry. Unfortunately, schools in Romania still teach economics as the Japanese teach the history of World War II. Politicians are guilty and we supported and adored them.

4:37 oh thank God! I thought i was the only one who was losing my breath on those stairs 😂😂😂. I was watching some of your other videos and saw you are preatty fit and walk fast and I was actually wondering how would you cope with the stars. Turns out I find out a couple of videos latter 😅. It makes me so sad to know you as a newcomer/tourist felt unwanted in my city 😔😢. Maybe its because you are Japanese and people though you are a covid bringer 😥, most of our townsfolk really got... should I say scared because of the pandemic. (even though there are a few chinese residents in our town and i dont think they would judge by that, or maybe you were unlicky with the people you met 😅 I do hope you will visit our town again if you ever decide to visit Romania again. If not for the unwelcoming people at least for our "steampunk gigant" 😅😅

Perceptive comment right there👍 It's true that "virtue signaling" and other forms of posturing behavior will inevitably intensify in front of a camera (I'm no exception, even though I try to be as honest as I can). We as viewers should always be aware of this phenomenon 😉

The driver is kind of an anarchist, but it seems he doesn't know anything about anarchism, that's why he seemed so confused. He blamed the government for ruining the city, but he still advocates for the existence of a government, which is a contradictory position to have... He was not very happy with the communism either, criticizing some of the bad parts, but it's not happy with the present "democracy" either. He simply don't want anyone to have power over him and have the ability to control him and even steal money from him. Which is anarchism.
