Convenience + comfort + views + adventure + environment are why trains are usually better than car or plane travel. Not always of course. And, if you're traveling overnight, you save on a hotel room, especially if there are shower facilities on the train or at either station. Btw, some quick tips. Always bring your own food and drinks on a train trip of over an hour or two, especially if meals aren't included. Also a pair of flip flops or slides, especially for the shower. NEVER walk barefoot. And if it's an overnight trip or you plan to nap, an eye mask, ear plugs, and blanket and pillow if you're in coach. Noise cancelling headphones are also good to have if you have a pair. There are cons, sure, but usually the pros outweigh them.

And, as far as your specific experience on this trip, I'm glad to hear that the "scary" part had nothing to do with personal safety or health concerns but rather incompetence on the part of OBB. What I think was actually more scary was there not being a room key for the two of you, which seems odd and unprofessional and for which you should have gotten some sort of compensation. These keys are digitized so you'd think that as in a hotel they could have created a new key for you with some blanks that they had. Also, yeah, 500 Euro is pretty expensive for an overnight train trip even with a sleeper, especially since yours didn't have an en suite bathroom and shower and wasn't the most comfortable. But you really do need to deduct the cost of a hotel room in either city, which you'd be hard pressed to find for under $100 unless it was super budget and not that nice or far from the center, from this, along with the cost of both of you getting to and from the airport on both ends. Plus you got a basic complimentary breakfast for each of you, and there was a sink in your room. So realistically it really cost you closer to 300-350 Euro. But, train trips are about adventure as much as they are about money, of course. 😊
