Amazing statement - 'What maps have done to give a perspective of geography, so do great books do to chronological understanding of history'

One of the ways the Great Books has changed me is it has given me an understanding of the evolution of our intellectual development. I have a greater understanding of how ideas evolve and change and how pervasive they are in our culture. Has given me perspective on my own culture and my own thought processes. They have also empowered me to be a better and kinder person and driven me to gain knowledge for its own sake. I have only been reading them for a couple of years and the value has been immense.

Please be Muslim, sir. Prophet Jesus peace be upon him is a lovely prophet of Allah. The real original Bible have already veen changed, just like real original Torah. The Holy Qoran however, will never be changed until the end of the world as the Qoran itself suggests that it'd be protected.

A history of ancient civilization or else the different ages of transformation of places in the world takes a person outside of themselves so that they can contemplate on some rise and fall or see a resemblance in the present. It might give the person a a brief rest from the problems of life due to a higher sense of understanding or distance of peace. There is nothing in books that can unsoil anyone though because not even the most obvious problems in the world get solved no matter how ridiculous life becomes. These books have actually been dropped for the most part. Wizards and dragons might return to the world.

That was very good! Very interesting! Amazing views! And that Livy quote!! But I think our Christian Friends should read The Qur'an (As well as The story of the Prophets from an Islamic perspective) because Prophet Jesus's true and pure message has been almost lost if not entirely, in fact there where many things that were unknown and unforgotten about Prophet Jesus nor did the Christians of the Middle East know until Prophet Muhammad came and the Qu'ran was revealed, The Qu'ran makes more mention of Prophet Jesus and Prophet Moses more than it does of Prophet Muhammad. This is why we say Prophet Muhammad is the seal of the Prophets, no Prophet came nor will come after him and he has finalised the one true messages of all The Prophets of God.

sm7ma, I appreciate the comment, and I think there is great value in reading widely. But I feel I must explain what appears to be a great difference in how we view Jesus and how you might view Jesus and Mohamed. Jesus is not a prophet, he is the eternal son of God, and God Himself, equal in glory and power with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. There is no comparison between any prophets in history and Jesus Christ. He is before all, and in all, and in him all things have their being. He is God, Creator, redeemer, AND he was incarnate into man: the God-Man. All prophets before him pointed to him, and all godly men after him point back to him. He is center-piece of history. The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is the focal point of all of human history, to be culminated when Christ returns in glory, when all the dead will rise from their tombs and worship Him. He is not dead, like every prophet in history, but rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and at this moment sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, alive, ruling, hearing our prayer, and interceding to the Father on our behalf, still 100% man, and 100% God. Thanks again for commenting, and allowing me to explain the Christian perspective and hope. The Apostle Paul said that if Christ did not rise from the dead, we are most to be pitied among men. But Christ died, AND rose, and is eternally God, taking with us into the grave all our sins by his free grace, and bringing us into fellowship with Himself. Christians have enormous hope and joy in the future expectation of the resurrection of the dead. We do no hope for mercy, if only we can be good enough in this life. No, rather we rest in full assurance in the sacrifice of Christ, who paid the price of our sins once and for all, and brought us close to Himself. Mercy and grace are promised us in Christ, and NO OTHER prophet/person/or false god. This is the Christian hope, and we rejoice greatly in it! I would be happy to explain more if you have questions, peace to you, Daniel

Then you wouldn't understand the majority of the Great Books... Most of its authors were Christians, and even the pre-Christian authors were so loved and preserved by Christians that we wouldn't even have most of them today if monks had not carefully copied the ancient texts. To put it another way, studying the Great Books as a non-Christian, or as someone who doesn't understand Jesus, is to look in from the outside. You will see a lot about Christianity, but to truly understand it you need to come inside.

Don't quite agree with this guy. He sees history as a circle, because of unchanging human nature. But I think, that history is a spiral, an dhuman nature, despite stubborn towards change, can change, more than that. It can be engineered: through science, technology, and education. We will not stay the same forever.

Then that would be another existence. It wouldn't be human anyway. There is no human anymore, anyway. People lost their quest fer truth, significance and meaning; and they live just fer fame, luxury, acceptance by others, money and sexual pleasures. Mostly money and sexuality though.

...Can you hear that? ...Well? Can you hear it? ...Please, tell me you can hear it. ...it’s the Hum! Do you know what that Hum is? ...It’s your courage to come. Know that there is no challenge that we cannot overcome. We shall win...and we shall do it with courage. every crum. The Hum - hums ahead of our hearts, shielding all precious to soul. The Hum of our hearts...that song, the hymn of courage, of strength, confidence, has come, and doubters of courage and discouragers are dumb, and if you doubt what you have, if you do doubt each starry crumb of your courage beating, singing, burning and humming within you, then you will remain glum. A courageless heart is a soul numb. Now let this world be our fearless drum, for courage and its rise; it’s time for us to remove our conformity-disguise. From courageous fire rising over our hearts - we - the matchless - shall beat the ordinary enemy, for fear is no competition to the Hum to drum the world. All threats, great...small, past, present and future - we have, we can...we will overcome; we will overcome all fear, every enemy, each obstacle, every and each challenge, and we will do it with courage. We are the hum... the only hum to drum this world. So everybody listen. listen to your hum...hear the hum of others. It’s there...always there, and it never goes, can never die...the hum is always passed on.
