Sir John's early voice is sharper and clearer than his later, more mannered delivery, beautiful as it was. The cool aristocratic tone suits this melancholy poem perfectly.

Gielgud gives a stronger, more vivid, and convincing reading than Eliot had. He reads with surer emphasis, giving the narrative details concreteness. I've never enjoyed this poem more.
