Guy Dexter (Dominic West) makes a startling proposition that may save Barrow from a life of loneliness.
Downton Abbey: A New Era: In 1928, Tom Branson (Allen Leech), the Earl of Grantham's widowed son-in-law, marries Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton), the illegitimate daughter of and sole heir to Lady Maud Bagshaw, Queen Mary's lady-in-waiting. Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), the Dowager Countess of Grantham, astonishes the family by revealing that long ago she was gifted a villa in the South of France by the Marquis de Montmirail, who has recently passed away. She is leaving it to her great-granddaughter, Sybbie, Tom's daughter with the late Lady Sybil Crawley, to ensure that she has a more equal social and financial standing to her cousins. The principal cast of the first film returned. Joining the cast are Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, Dominic West and Jonathan Zaccaï.

So not only does Thomas get the happy ending some of us have wanted - one that he's painfully earned in the last seasons of the show IMHO - he gets to live more honestly - something I didn't realize he wanted so deeply, but makes perfect sense in retrospect - and we see that Mary actually has come to value him and his capabilities, something that I didn't see in her when, in the previous film, she got Carson to take over for the royal visit. And even as he's getting older, Dominic West is still handsome and very charming.

I have watched this again and again. This scene is one of the great feel good experiences I’ve had in decades. I get butterflies in my tummy each time. It really is a beautiful moment.

@@jacquelineroque5707 1967 to be specific. But him being a Hollywood star would mean he was basically immune to any prosection on that front and by extension Barrow. True they wouldn't be able to have any public displays of affection but it was much more of a free life than Barrow had in the past. And hopefully in the real world we will eventually get to where all people can state their love openly without fear.

Considering Thomas moved to USA anyways, I wish Julian found a way to get him together (in movie 1) with Ellis. Maybe they could both resign & be business partners & roommates. Their chemistry was much better than these 2.

I came to comment the same thing that there was practically no Chemistry between Thomas and Guy Dexter. It was very disappointing. I was happy he found someone in the end but wish he had the same chemistry as he did with Richard Ellis.

My question is what tripped Dexter's gaydar off. I looked for clues in their first two encounters, and other than showing interest in Dexter's career, Barrow was very discreet.

As a gay man myself, "gaydar" does exist and it is something that you have, you just sense it. It may sound stupid, I have experience of my gaydar being 99% correct.

Dexter is a professional actor. I think he is aware of body language and would pick up if there is an interest. He could of had discreet affairs already although he seems serious with Thomas

Normally I can tell If someone like me for the way they look at me. Its not obvious, and some people told me they can't do the same. I'm a woman, girls are not my thing, but i suppose its easier to a gay dude to know If someone else is gay If the person has interest in him, the exchange of looks can be very discreet and very informative.

I think Guy also has a certain confidence in moving through the world. While on one hand the higher up you are, the higher you have to fall, if there was a "gay scandal" surrounding him it seems unlikely someone of his social standing would end up in prison for being gay. Thomas, being working class, literally could, and so the stakes are higher and he has to tread more carefully... especially after the mishaps in early seasons. Guy may feel willing to take a few risks coming on to people. I love how he plays off the totally unnecessary smoothing out of Barrow's clothes like it was a normal thing to do, when it was "I'm just going to pet you for several seconds in case you weren't sure of where I was going with all this"😂

Thomas is so gunshy by coming on to so many men who were not gay. And he got kicked down for it and then falling for someone Ellis. And probably just having a very short-lived 1 week affair with him . The the look on his face when guy leaves the room is priceless and it was one of shock and surprise and W. TF did he just ask me to go to the United States with him? He was like so surprised that in a good way. I don't think I've ever seen him so excited in as best way. They could ever see him as excited. I also think the problem with Thomas's character was that every young knew. Do you put men or Butler or valid that came into the house? He immediately was attracted to them. And that's where he ran into problems like he was very visual. And you can't be especially during that. of time coming on to every single young guy. So I think that's what that expression at the end of this was as though a rock hit him or something. He was like what someone literally wants me? Similar to like ellis. He the look on his face when he realized that ellis wanted him. It's almost like what you don't think you're cute enough to get any guy you want. He has a kissable mouth. I'll give him that.

Am I the only one who noticed that poor Thomas tends to be attracted to every male. That seems to come on to him or that he finds attractive or makes a move on him. Or he tries to make a move on his pen. Probably been at least 6 different guys. But you know he can only run into the people. He runs Int you. I think that. Dominic West is a very handsome guy and Barrow is cute. So I would have loved to see in a big kiss. Their kisses when he kisses a certain man. It's so quick for mench, kiss man. They don't make it until lingering kiss. Some shows half done that, but I guess in that particular error they were lucky to just get a small little kiss. PS Barrow has the utmost adorable smile. He could be a vampire in his next life I love those canine teeth

I'm not sure I would start a relationship with a boyfriend who wants me to be his valet and personal secretary. But I guess times were so cruel to gay men that this was the only acceptable compromise that Thomas could find without getting too much attention and raising too many suspicions.

you do realize that the big screen male actors were gay and the studios had them as roommates and fake girl friends during the 20's through the 60's right ? Rock Hudson with Doris Day and Tab Hunter and Connie Stevens as an example. According to my uncle he was friends with Tab Hunter, he never said how though.

Can anyone explain why they make? Daisy's character seemed like a such an airhead and that she could barely speak. Seems overwhelmed just by normal people and acts like a 15 year old actually acts like a 12 yr old. her barely able to soeak, and cries at anything. It's not a good character. I think no matter how young she was if she started at 16 or 18 she would be more mature than this actress is portraying. It's cringeworthy to watch.
