I remember when the Roman Emperor Rahmus Emanuelus famously stated, "never let a good third century crisis go to waste"

Always kind to hear these types of things. Objectivity is something everyone assumes is a myth, but it's not what makes history good. :)

Your series of videos are very informative. They are jam-packed full of information. I have learned so much. By the way, at 18:33, that painting depicts the surrender of Vercingetorix to Julius Caesar. Visually, it goes well enough with the topic of this video, but the history behind it is removed by about 300 years. I don't know if you realized that.

Hi! Thank you so much for the videos. Just one thing I noticed: My schoolbook says that Cyprian hid under Decius' persecution and survived, but that he stood forward under Valerius' persecution, and was then beheaded, in 258 AD.

When speaking about the Libellus it sounded similar to the text of Revelation 13 regarding mark of the beast, buying/selling, forced worship of the beast or be slain, etc.

Thank you Ryan Reeves! Jesus came in 'the fullness of time' and I have been studying that out to see and understand the times in which he came. I have studied through all of your videos on the Greeks and the Romans and now the early church. I am captivated to go deeper. Thank you, I have learned so much!

Fun fact: Decius may or may not be the very last Pharaoh, depending on which list you believe. At least one Egyptian King List, Egypt being a Roman Province by then, includes Roman Emperors up until Decius.

Very interesting video. Small glitch. I believe that at about 20:20 you have a picture of the Bengal Lancers of the British Raj.

So it is. Correction. Just before that at 20:13. You can clearly see the rifle butts and ammo bandoliers. An understandable error as the British Raj preserved a lot of the Mogul style which was of Persian origin.

Wait, so the church had popes before Constantine? Did they have the same power and authority as later popes?
@RyanReevesM
@RyanReevesM 8 жыл бұрын
+SGDR // Yes and no. The early patriarchal bishops often were called 'papa' (pope) as an honorific, but the bishop of Rome was often held in high esteem for the role of Rome in the empire and for the focus of apostles like Paul and Peter on Rome for ministry. We can still refer to the bishop of Rome as the pope early on, but the later problems of certain popes, and the expansive power of the pope over kings of Europe, is a product of the middle ages.

Thanks for the support. And yeah, I'm cursed by an old professor who used to add that syllabul and when I'm discussing it live his pronunciation spills out. I heard it when I edited the audio after and considered scraping it and starting over, but I liked the way the rest of it sounded so I just figured it would be an homage to my old proff. :)

Ryan Reeves just a hint, from a Persian speaker: Sassanid=Sah- sah- NEED Two short identical syllables with the emphasis on the final syllable, three syllables in total.

Thank you very much for these videos. Do you have anything on the history of the manifestations of the holy spirit? 1) Utterance manifestations: tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy, 2) Revelation manifestations: Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, and Discerning of spirits, 3) Power manifestations: Gifts of healing, Manifestation of faith and working of miracles?

What was the status of Jews at this time? They'd be essentially in the same boat as Christians in refusing to sacrifice to a pagan god. Was there some sort of exception carved out due to Judaism's relative antiquity compared to Christianity's relative recency?
@pete9320
@pete9320 7 жыл бұрын
I remember Marc Duncan adressing this, saying that the Romans had agreements with most of the Jewish communities. I think the reason for this must have been previous experiences with Jewish revolts (and how dangerous and devastating they were, these revolts were under Vaspasian). Some jewish people were of course persecuted, some of course gave up their faith, the remainder "struck" a deal. Christians and jews were (probably) NOT seen as the same back then - and certainly not treated as the same (with Christians being treated worse during the Severin dynasty).

naesmy 4891 I would say it's a matter of attitude. Judaism doesn't have evangelicals like Christianity does.

re Cyprian of Carthage. How did Pontius know what was said at the trial? It reminds me of the gospel writers knowing what was said at Jesus's trial, and what Pilate was thinking. Surely no one claims Pontius had some sort of revelation? If Pontius was there and taking notes, what evidence do we have that the copy we have is original? What is the oldest physical copy we have? Considering the church fathers bragging about using untruths to push there own orthodoxy, how do we really trust any of these early church documents for which we do not have originals? Who was the church father who said that the number of martyrs could be easily counted? Does that not indicate there is some contradiction going on here?

Videos on this channel are usually well made. But your recurring map you use this time is so bad that it shouldn't have been use in a so called university course. I mean, the Roman empire is not shown on the south mediterranean regon, franks and allemani are badly misplaced. Palmyre wasn't shown. I means for rezl, it"'s not because what you study is theology that you should be so Don't you think?careless about history and geography ..
