I celebrated my 60tb birthday on Good Friday in Rome ! Four wonderful days there! Very pleasant weather for me, sunny but not red hot! The heavens opened in Pompeii for a few hours, but it didn't ruin the day! Four weeks later and I'm still buzzing from the trip! Packed so many trips into the four days! The Colosseum, Vatican, At Peters, Sistine chapel , trevi fountain, Spanish Steps, Palatine Hill,Roman Forum ! Loved it and watching these videos I realize that I have to go back and visit longer!

Another excellent video. Can you or a viewer provide some general advice for a single diner? I'll be visiting (alone) in mid May want to have dinner at some of the recommeded restaurants. I like to be spontaneous so I probably won't be making reservations. In the States, a single can often be seated before couples or groups who are waiting. Do Roman restaurants allow single seating at the bar? Thanks for any advice.
@Romewise Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your kind words! As for your request for general advice about eating out in Rome as a single diner, I see two different questions. The first is about whether you need to make reservations or not. This is a really common questions The answer depends on the person. Some people know where they want to eat, and research specific places for their trip. In that case, yes, you must reserve. All the best restaurants simply book up. On the other hand, for anyone who prefers not to have a set plan, you will always find SOMEPLACE to eat. Just know that as I mentioned above, all the really good places will be booked. This goes for super casual local spots as well as more upscale restaurants. Romans like to eat out too, and often their favorite places are favorites with tourists, too, so if you want to be spontaneous, just don't count on those types of places to have room for you at the last minute. As to your second question about being allowed to sit at the bar - the answer is that I know of almost no restaurants in Rome that have a proper bar where you can site and dine. And as for being sat before other diners, no, this also will likely not happen. Many Rome restaurants are small and have lots of 2-tops for single diners or parties of 2, and they would go on a first-come, first-served basis. All that being said, I assure you that as a single diner without reservations, you WILL find places to eat, and you will not have to wait long. And it's super common to see single diners eating out in Rome because many tourists travel alone, and there are plenty of Romans who also dine out alone, especially at lunch. So enjoy, have a wonderful trip, and buon appetito!

Another fabulous video - thank you. We will be in Rome for 8 days from April 22nd. We were planning on taking the train/bus to see Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana on the 25th, as I’ve heard they are free on this day. But I’m wondering is this a silly idea - will they be really crowded, given the holiday and free entry? Would we be better going on a different day? What is your experience about this?
@Romewise8 ай бұрын
Thanks! To be honest, I always avoid and I advise to avoid visiting any sites when they are free such as on the Free Sunday or a holiday like April 25. It will be a crazy scene and you can expect long lines and crowds. That being said, we are not talking about high volume sites like the Colosseum, Pantheon, or Pompeii. So you could risk it. But if you have a choice, and don't mind paying the entrance fee, I'd suggest going a different day.

Thanks for watching! Yes, April 25 is a very important holiday in Italy, as I explain in this video. And many sites are free across Italy and you cannot reserve in advance, so I suggest getting there really early if you want to go that day!

Make sure to give yourself plenty of time for security. You have a leeway of about 15 minutes before and after your entry time. Just try to get into the security line about 15-20 minutes prior to your entry time if you can.

@Romewise Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I'd be happy to try to provide more suggestions for men. Where the packing goes, I was trying to be generic about "jeans and khakis" and shoes and jackets. Are there any specific tips you are looking for? I am very grateful for your feedback and will be happy to work this into future videos! Thanks again.
@dpfeeley21 Жыл бұрын
In short, how to go to Rome as an American and not stick out like a tourist. I’ve seen videos where people say don’t wear khakis! So confused.
@jenniferp7497 Жыл бұрын
@@dpfeeley21 when we travel in Europe, my husband wears dark denim (black, deep blue, dark grey) that fits well. It can be dressed up at night with a dress shirt, but he can wear a T-shirt and light jacket during the day. (That's about as much as he's willing to do as far as "looking nice".)
@Romewise Жыл бұрын
@@dpfeeley21 Ah ok I understand. I will work on that for upcoming videos, and I will have Alessandro, my Roman husband who is an expert in this area, give his thoughts as well! Italian men do wear khaki pants, shorts and jeans. The big difference is that Italian men tend to wear more tightly fitted pants with much narrower ankles than what many American men wear. There is also a difference in the shoes they wear, even when it comes to casual shoes/sneakers. So if you want to stand out less as a tourist, you could try wearing more tailored pants like these: amzn.to/3TOHY4x. On the other hand, if you are not used to this kind of cut, it may be less comfortable for you, and I am a big believer in being comfortable with all the walking around you will be doing in Rome and in Italy. So you should decide what feels right for you. But again, thanks for the suggestion, I will address this in a future video!
