The Villa Borghese, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century in the middle of a huge garden, is one of the museum attractions of Rome.
Originally from Siena, the Borghese family, who collected ancient and contemporary art, arrived in Rome in the mid-16th century. Unique exhibits await visitors here: from the Renaissance to the 19th century.
In addition to paintings by the greatest artists of the time, famous ancient reliefs, sarcophagi and sculptures can also be seen. Cardinal Scipione Borghese collected many of these gems in the 17th century.
Another piquant highlight of the collection is Antonio Canova's marble sculpture of the lascivious Pauline Bonaparte, who married Camillo Borghese. But also Caravaggio's "Sick Bacchus".
Caravaggio came to Rome in 1594 as a vegetable painter and within just a decade revolutionized the entire history of painting. Almost forgotten by art history, Caravaggio was only rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century. The Venetian Titian is represented, among other things, with his famous "Amor profano e Amor sacro".
Raphael's portrait of a man forms the culmination of a unique collection.
