If i'm inviting this person into my home (so to speak) for 40 mins or an hour at a time, i'd much rather not be annoyed the entire time and i'd rather they actually knew something about the game they're playing. Any who... I'm a really big fan of the way you present your videos. You are really good at explaining things like history and types of people, etc. etc.. But i also love how descriptive you are in what's happening on screen and why it is you're doing what you're doing. Connor Quarmby That's because the latin V make a soft "w" sound
@shadowfragment8 жыл бұрын
The pronunciation of Velites is actually interesting to think about. It probably could have varied depending on where the speaker was raised. The Romans used V as both 'U' and 'W' interchangeably. A proper education would have probably taught Weh-li-tehs, but probably varied with accent to things like WAY-li-tays or we-LEE-tes. A poor education could also lead to alternative pronunciation. You also have to keep in mind your own cultural language and how it integrates latin into its language. Language isn't really about being historically accurate, it's about being understood by the person you want to communicate with. Given the way I spelt my phonetic interpretations of the words with a 'W', English clearly doesn't understand 'V' to make that sound normally. To be understood by English speakers it's probably best to pronounce it as a regular V, so Veh-li-tehs, Vay-li-tays, Ve-Lee-tehs, or some combination of those. You might instead also pronounce it as Ve-Lights or Vay-Lights. If you were French you might pronounce it Ve-leet.

Fell in love with this game - from the moment I read the preview in PC Gamer to the very recent time I played it. At the time it was one of the best TBS/RTS strategy games ever to grace our computers. I racked up hundreds of hours campaigning as the Brutii….then the Julii….then the Scipii....I even did full conquest campaigns as the Egyptians and the Greeks! After being familiar with the game's mechanics, Rome II took some learning, but admittedly the 'remake' is far superior in graphics and introduced some additional improvements to the gameplay. But Rome 1 just had that extra-special charm. It was released around the same time as Half Life 2 - another legendary title still playable today - so it was a great time indeed for a gamer to be alive! Like many Rome gamers, I often adopted Hannibal's strategy of establishing a line of battle (attack or defence, depending on the mood of the enemy), then used lesser infantry and/or cavalry to flank and swing round engaged enemy troops. An additional factor, unlike Hannibal, often I had some archers or peltasts at my disposal, often softening up the enemy formations, shooting over the heads of my own troops (one of the advantages of a bow versus the musket of later centuries). But not all battles took this form. On occasion, I had to adopt a defensive position - at times similar to Hannibal's 'curved bow' (a more flexible formation that could adapt to the situation), or - especially if the enemy had a lot of horse - formed my units into a vast square (in truth predating European 18th century battle tactics). Both Rome 1 and Rome 2 don't have the 'form square' feature, so I had to construct such squares myself. Barbarian Invasion and Alexander were excellent expansions to an already critically acclaimed game, a breath of fresh air with some nice little extras. Great memories!

I love Rome: Total War! Like you, I put more hours into this game than any other and some of my fondest gaming memories came from this game. Like one, in particular, wasn't even with my game; it was a friend of mine that had foolishly put all his generals inside a city and they were facing a full army at the gates. He came to me for help and I was happy to oblige. It was a hard battle to be sure, but I was able to pull out a victory with none of the generals lost by a combination of hit and run attacks against their infantry while battling them at the gates/doorways they exited from. It was such a great feeling seeing how shocked and excited he was.

If I may make a suggestion, prioritize Cavalry. Keep at least 3-4 units of cav in your army, and you'll win easily, even against Phalanxes. I managed to beat a 2500 strong force almost entirely using cav. I used cav to basically swarm their cav units, skirmishers and generals, and when the phalanxes turn to engage the cav, your infantry slam into their backs, almost always routing them, or opening up themselves up for your own cav to flank and rout them.

circular maps would be a pain to program (most engines cannot handle circles just polygons with arbitrarily high edge counts that look like circles from a distance) and the only way the low slope thing would work is if battlemaps completely ignored the terrain of the campaign map. besides gotta give new players some way to cheese things in a pinch.

@quillanjacobson14786 жыл бұрын
More complicated as in you have to build around what the game forces you to do. you want cavalry and infantry in a city? guess what, it either has to make shit for money or be unhappy. You have to plan your army building around sending them off to different territories and shit. You can't plan quick invasions because the unrest is ridiculous and you can't just retrain, you have to sit there while things recover. You have to plan for areas to be high replenishment rate or you have to sit around for ages waiting for armies to recover. You have to manage regions instead of each settlement being isolated. Its dumbed down but in a weird way it makes shit WAY too complicated
