Hey Heir. This is my opinion of Rome. (With the following rules. Max 14 infantry, Max 8 melee infantry, and Max 6 of the same. max 10 cav, max 4 HA) They are cost-effective... They have the Equites 500$ for 70 Armor... Veteran Legionnaire, Evocati Cohort, and Hastati are all super cost-effective. The rest of their melee infantry isn't worth their cost at all. With rules, Rome isn't on the same level as most of the barb factions ( Except Lusitani and Arevaci). It's simply due to their low charge. Rome is a great faction for the early stages of the Tournament, you can counter any faction other than most barbs with them; therefore, I would say they are viable. Their best match-up-- Any Greek faction, Suebi, and Nervii ( Due to 70 Armor Equities for 500$). Most Eastern factions ( Due to high armor and cheap Velites 200$) Their Worst match-up--- Parthia, Mid-tier, and top-tier barbs. Are they too good? Nah... Are they good for competition? Yes. Especially when countering an opponent's pick in a best of 3 match. (This is from my personal experience with them, some elite players may rightfully disagree with me) Sol.

i still struggle to understand the choice of vigiles over hastiti. and any reason why you chose syrians over balerics. ?

@@mdstmouse7 He may say something different for this specific instance, but I have been watching Sol stream and I asked him a similar question. Archers, especially ones with Precision Shot, are for countering specific units, be it cavalry or elite infantry, you don't want to deal with. They can do a lot of damage quick if you get good volleys with Precision Shot on. This can hurt dangerous units before they get into combat and make it hard for them to pay for themselves. Watch him focus the Oathsworn any chance he gets. Slingers seem to be more for standing off with other skirmishers or denying an area as well as having enough ammo to make them dangerous if left till late game. Even the worst slingers are dangerous if mobility is gone in late game. Once units have already taken damage the higher ap, low arc, faster fire rate and projectile speed make up for the lower overall damage and pretty much any infantry needs to be scared of slingers late even those with good block chance.

@@mdstmouse7 Yeah to be honest not just Sol but I see a lot of the better players specifically bring Cretans or Syrians to counter the better mid-tier melee cavalry (the stuff 700 to 900 in cost and still good). If you are playing factions that can bring those archers (Greeks, Successors, Rome, Carthage) for the most part (some exceptions), you don't have any cost-effective cavalry to duke it out with things like Heavy Horse and Noble Blood Cavalry and if you brought shock cavalry it is probably needed elsewhere. So, if you can hurt the enemy melee cavalry early and make it combat ineffective, you have a better chance to get your mobility to the late game for rear/cycle charges and running down skirmishers or routing units, so they don't come back. EDIT: and the Vigiles thing is purely because they are 200 have good block chance and have square. The blocky formation and bonus morale means he can stop charges with them and loose missiles into what has attacked them. Even more so with the non-formation attack barbs that will wrap around the square formation more and give him flank and even rear shots removing block chance from the equation.

Yeah the equites is just a better citizen cav for cheaper. I would say rome is one of those factions that depends a lot on the rules because you can just spam masses of the most cost effective infantry what holds them back imo the most are their terrible spear units and general only being such a bad low model cav instead of other factions that bring a elite infantry unit as general.

Over the span of 15 seconds, Tylis player threw away their missile cav, wasted their general abilities for basically no reason and got their oathsworn baited. Shows how quick things can happen and how much micro can hurt.

​@@awarren26 Yes, but no... The problem with facing a meta Roman build is that you NEED to have tools to deal with them, because they will just win in a clean grind. The cav fight would've looked totally different had the jav cav been able to do their thing properly, and there was literally no point in using the first oathsworn like that. If you throw away your killing tools against the Romans, you're going to lose the slog fight that is coming.

One thing I have learned from Pro players, Sol included, is that one of the reasons to pick archers over slingers is damaging key units. Archers with precision shot focus firing on one target can do such a burst of damage as to really hurt the unit's effectiveness for the rest of the battle. Obviously, there are many other factors, but if you feel you can't win the mobility fight, and therefore can't get rear charges, archers are a great choice to really hurt important units before melee is started in earnest. Look at the focus fire as soon as the Oathsworn makes itself a viable target.

Rome is very boring unfortunately because they're so powerful. It would be more interesting if the Rome player bought a smaller army of all elite units and tried to make it work

Boii and Averni are the traditional response picks to rome, and vice versa. I've been seeing Kush as something picked against rome pretty often too.

@@Rellana1 I will have to defer to Hotel Soap on this one because I have never played multiplayer. In fact, I heavily suspect if there was a 5 minute challenge for me to stay alive for more than 5 minutes vs. him or any of the other prolific online players, I would not be able to win that challenge in 100 tries. 😆 I would guess the horse archer factions are a lot more micro-intensive, and by extension a lot harder to be successful with. Even with that, the ammo is not limitless, so I can see where that would cause issues as well.

Tylis is the Barbarian equivalent of Rome. Solid defensive infantry. Meh cavalry. Interesting choices in skirmish.

I very much agree. Even tribal warriors are very much mid-tier Roman infantry but swap charge and melee attack. Oversimplification sure, but close enough to the truth.

Are Oathsworn still the best high-tier infantry in the game? After Kush being added to the game, I thought Armored Shotel Warriors would be considered the best infantry unit. I'm not sure though, since I'm not a pro player.

Royal Spartans used to be the best infantry, but then CA raped the hoplite formation.

Yes oathsowrn is still one of the 2 best elite infantry in the game. Galatian royal guard can beat oathsworn but they are more expensive and slight more vulnerable to archer but not by much, they are basically a side grade to oathsworn

For me i allways hated the oathsworn. They have good armor, good attack, good defence, good charge, good morale. there to much of a "im what chosen should of been" Rome relys on the grind, and denying the charge. IF you cant deny the charge, rome crumbles. also grinds my gears romans never got shield wall. It seems a bit wierd half naked folks can come together to form a screen of metal, whilst highly disaplined troops are like "meh" Balance balance i know...

It's fine to have Rome be so strong because, well, that reflects the reality of ancient history. I think other players just like adopting other factions because it's seen as more interesting and you can make other factions 'yours' if that makes sense and it just has more flavor. I love the Seleucids for instance because they're so diverse and you get so many options of East and West. If they could rework the Pikes and give them different advantages and disadvantages then I'd love this game even more.

If you mean Gatea then yes, they are quite popular. Tylis is more like celtic tribe and they consider one of the strongest faction in MP
