Story:
Player died in hardcore mode. The dog had no idea, so the two waited for each other for years. Eventually, the dog dies and meets the player again in heaven and both live happily ever after :)

"Steve" lost to the Ender dragon and respawned in heaven after his fight , the trip would've been dangerous which is why he left his dog at home, better to leave him there than to make him turn into a pile of smoke. Assuming his dog was killed by the mobs after his house was destroyed he also made it onto heaven
