The whole experience of feeling nothing is close to what happened to me. When you turn 8 you get baptized and get a blessing to receive the holy ghost. I distinctly remember being excited to feel the holy ghost for the first time like all of my older mormon friends described, but I felt nothing and it scared me, so I always lied that I did feel it. I thought that when I got the priesthood at 12 I would feel it. I went to 3 different temples, including Salt Lake and Nauvoo, to do baptisms for the dead and felt nothing. For years I thought something was wrong with me, I had nightmares about going to outer darkness. I prayed every day trying to feel anything until I was 16 and stopped going to church, but I didn't truly lose my faith until I really looked into church history when I was 20. Now I just feel like I wasted my entire childhood and teenage years fearing something that wasn't there. It really deeply affected my mental health for a long time.

Former mormon here, born and raised in the church. This is an impressively well researched video. Mormonism is weird and complex and a lot of faithful members would probably deny some of the claims you've made here, or say you've misrepresented things, but honestly I think this is one of the most accurate and unbiased representations of mormonism I've seen from an independent youtuber. Good job
@DavidPeel-fo9xv21 сағат бұрын

@@DavidPeel-fo9xv what part of this video portrayed the church negatively? They didn’t really even mention the polygamy, or the mountain meadows massacre, or really any of the big hot button issues they could have mentioned in regards to the LDS church. There was a few somewhat unflattering things mentioned but none of them were untrue. But that’s what unbiased means.
@williamd706220 сағат бұрын
@@ethangordon3114 i think it was more the combination of the editing style, the music, and the choice words in explaining a few ideas. I think it was incredible, but there was definitely a more anti-religion basis on it. It was an accurate video, but not unbiased.
@DavidPeel-fo9xv20 сағат бұрын
@@ethangordon3114 @williamd7062 basically summed up my thoughts. You mentioned a couple things, like polygamy and the mountain meadows massacre. For the mountain meadows massacre, I think that the Church was not responsible for the event-Brigham Young even sent a letter to tell the organizers to leave the group alone. Fact of the matter was the the US government threatened invasion based on false claims of Utah seceding from the Union and caused hysteria towards outsiders. God bless you and have a good day.
@TrueBlueKangaroo18 сағат бұрын
@DavidPeel-fo9xv I understand your perspective, but I think it's going a little far to outright state that the LDS church wasn't responsible for the massacre. To preface this, I have distant relatives that were amongst the first settlers in the cedar city area, and several that directly engaged in the utah war, sabotaging federal supply chains. The utah expedition, whilst it was sent out of concern, was not an invasion, as utah had not succeeded. The problem is, given the lds record, young seeing the large force dispatched assumed it was hostile. His declaration of martial law as a response was based on that paranoia, and it had the church population scrambling as individual settlements tried to figure out what it actually meant. That scramble directly resulted in the conditions that instigated the massacre, and hence directly involves the church. Whilst I think you may have been trying to say it wasn't compeltly the fault of the church, it's still important to understand that a large portion was. Whilst it was a miscommunication, assuming invasion was impending before making contact with the expedition would have definitely been better than declaring martial law immediately. The church could not control the actions of the settlers, but there are consequences of a declaration of martial law, which the church was very aware of given what happened in nauvoo.

Its fortress architecture much like how embassies are built. This is because the Mormon Church is a shell corp of the CIA and the Vaults within it contain their physical holdings of Precious Metals. CIA itself is an arm of the Vatican and nicknamed the ‘Catholic Intelligence Agency’. The Directors are all members to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, while the ‘white collar’ is Catholic and the ‘blue collar’ is Mormon. They like Mormons for their cult like behavior and ability to keep a secret. They’re also less stigmatic in foreign countries compared to the long history of Catholics/Protestant Imperialism and Evangelical profiteering, so they are used for OCONUS Operations which their Missionaries are guised as. This is why the Mormon Church is officially valued at $100B, and unofficially valued at $200B. It’s also why they have oil refineries under management in Nigeria.

Mr Hoog: the cosmology is a huge part of not just Mormon imagery (visit temple square and you will see it everywhere- not surrounding the Christus statue and carved in granite on the outside walls all around the temple), it is imprinted on the mental processes of every Mormon through their temple rituals. So going “too deep into cosmology” is nearly impossible. I moved from Holland when I was 18 to do my two year mission in England. Then ended up at BYU, worked at their MTC in Provo, worked at the church office in Slc, sang with Mormon tabernacle choir, etc etc. Nothing in your video was over-stated or wrong, compliments on your summary. What struck me, something that never occurred to me, is how the religion is all centered ultimately on FOMO. Ik moet zeggen, ben blij dat ik eruit ben gestapt, die ketenen waren zwaar.

As a member of the church, I find this video fascinating. It's interesting to see how other people view my religion. There are a few corrections/notes I want to make though: - First off, there's the obligatory "we're not Mormons." The correct terminology is "members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," or some variation or shorthand of that (obviously you don't need to say the full thing every time, it's a long name). Not gonna harp on that point, but there it is - While baptisms for the dead are performed in a temple, other baptisms are often performed in other places, such as stake buildings - The idea that we "scavenge the ancestral vaults" inside a granite mountain is a bit silly. Most ancestry work takes place online nowadays - "Real Mormon churches are called chapels." Maybe that's the case in some places, but everyone I know just call them churches. We usually call the main room in the middle the "chapel" - The temple shown at 6:12 has a really interesting reason behind the design. It's meant to represent the cloud and pillar of fire from the Old Testament. The symbolism is kinda cool, but we pretty much all agree that it looks kinda strange lol - The idea that we created an "exclusive club" in response to not being invited to parties is a bit ridiculous, and it makes us sound almost petty - Being born gay, leaving an abusive marriage, or being born asexual does not prevent you from reaching the highest degree of glory Those were the main things I wanted to clarify, but don't take it as me not liking the video. It's always really interesting to hear an outside perspective on the church.

The majority of times when people call Mormons Mormons is because they want to separate Mormonism from Christianity, which is fair in my eyes since they don't affirm the Nicene creed (what the vast majority of people question to know if someone's a Christian or not), *or the most basic* teaching. Practicing church member here - your fantastic 3D models and straightforward narration with unexpected humor are what attracted me to your channel in the first place. Overall the stylistic choices though felt darker than they needed to be, more bleak and nefarious than your typical straightforward, clean aesthetic. I can 100% understand the curiosity and mystery that so many feel about an unusual building with restricted access. I also respect the varied experiences people have had with the church and I don’t hold their opinions against them, all of humanity is trying to make the most of whatever cards they are dealt and sort out their own experiences and it’s not easy for any of us. What you experience is a function of both what happens to you and your own interpretation of those events, I can’t speak for others experience but I’ll share my own. My own experiences within temple walls have varied but I can unequivocally say that within the temple I have experienced peace, guidance and inspiration that have been invaluable to my life. Our faith is centered in Jesus Christ and like all christians we find hope, peace and guidance in his teachings and example. Even from an academic point of view Christ’s role in our theology and temple worship would have been worth including. I don’t pray to or worship Joseph Smith or any other prophet, in the temple I am focused on my Savior, my relationship with God and how I can live as Jesus did within my own circle of influence. For me temple worship is not dark or mysterious. In fact temples are generally very bright (look up photos of temple interiors online, they usually have large bright chandeliers in the middle of large rooms). Like all human beings members of the Church of Jesus Christ are imperfect, flawed and looking for something. While some may not have found it within our church, within temple walls, there are millions who have and I’m immensely grateful for the impact temple worship has had on my life.

Fairly good representation of our doctrine surrounding temples, but two critical points are incorrect. 1) Jesus Christ as the savior and redeemer of all creation was almost entirely left out of your video, when in reality He is the center point of all these beliefs. 2) You stated, “if you have the unfortunate luck of being gay, being in an abusive marriage, or being asexual you will never be a ‘god’”. This is entirely inaccurate, and the central Christian message is that all our losses will be made up if we come into Christ, including and especially those losses that come to us through no fault of our own.

I was going to comment the same thing! That ad segue got me! Usually I’m two steps ahead of the ad read, mostly because the content shift is so obvious, so I’ll just fast forward to the end. This video wasn’t the “usual!” Lol 💯

Ex-Mormon turned atheist here - this video is very well-made! It's only now that I'm on the outside of the religion looking in that I can see how bizarre it all was. But I truly believed it all at one point. Being raised by well-intentioned parents in a cult full of well-intentioned people doesn't change the fact that it's a cult. I bear no ill will towards the members of the Mormon church-they are, writ large, mostly lovely people. But the religion and the culture it has created definitely have a dark side. I spent a lot of my life feeling unworthy, unlovable, and broken, constantly debating in my head whether I was too morally dirty to attend the next temple baptism session with my friends and family or not. I left the religion before going through the higher-order rituals, but I have had the chance to go to one of the open-houses Hoog mentions in the beginning of the video, and it was fascinating! Anyways, I'm rambling. I have a weird relationship with Mormonism now-it definitely damaged me in a number of ways which I'm still healing from, but there are also aspects of my upbringing in it that I'm truly grateful for.

Very interesting as a protestant evangelical christian to hear about the inner workings of these mormon churches, and as a European I was not aware of the scale at which it operates. Definetly did not expect this one from Hoog, but I'm glad I got it ;) For me there has always been a lot of mystery and speculation around the operations of the LDS church, so imagining it from the perspective of a would-be Mormon 'celestial being' (that part is still a bit confusing to me) in such a clear-told manner put a lot of puzzle pieces in place for me!

Ex-Mormon here, one very interesting thing about Mormonism is how, even within the faith, there are countless interpretations of its doctrine. Each generation is told a slightly tamer version of their stories, popular American values become Mormon ones, and confronting someone on their conflicting beliefs is strongly frowned upon. I think this is in part due to how relatively new Mormonism is, and their constant engagement in economics and academia (although BYU is on the brink of losing some of its accreditations and funding if it doesn’t reverse its policies on gay students).
@TheWarriorLP166 сағат бұрын
So, you tell me a Mormon can baptise me without me knowing it?
@magn63016 сағат бұрын
Thank you for this explanation of what Mormons believe. As a Christian I find this interesting, incorrect of course, but still, I have been to the Salt City Temple and must admit I truly felt "something" when I walked into the big dome - not evil or wrong, just something that actually made me cry. I know a handful of Mormons and I can only admire their values and commitment to their faith. I have never been harmed by Mormons so I will keep praying they see the truth in Jesus. You may want to reposition your Odoo add as it throws you to left-field until you realize it's an ad. Great Ad btw.

> incorrect of course Beautiful example of the hypocrisy of most religions. MY religion is the only true one! Why? Because a fantasy book written two thousand years ago by sheep herders says so!
