Darrell Waltrip and Terry Labonte were going for the win on the last lap of the 1981 edition of the Talladega 500 ... and forgot all about rookie Ron Bouchard.
It was their mistake.

Its Always cool when a short track Ace beats the "Big Guys" at their own game. I remember that race. Ron worked all day, stayed out of trouble and did what he was suppose to do on the last lap. GOD BLESS both of those Champions..Ron and Buddy.

Ronny was a very humble friendly guy, happy to have known him well! Like others who helped him over his years in racing he liked to give that help back to others in racing. He would come with us to Thompson Speedway when I was struggling and having a rough race season, we would rent the track for the day to test and Ronny would take me for laps in his Honda Ridgeline and show me his favorite lines as well as where and what to do to pick up speed, he’d climb up the wall in all 4 turns with my dad and they’d watch me up close in each of the turns and then coach me on what I was doing wrong and where I was losing speed. Helped me immensely, I got a handful of wins that season and finished second in points! I will never forget the guy!

I can listen to this story everyday. Loved watching Ronnie driver. The only reason I even turned on Winston Cup and Grand National, was Ronnie was driving. Watching him on the outside at Stafford.
