+wyatt claypool Portugal legalized all drugs in 2000, and started a program to encourage people to take care of their own health instead of fighting a meaningless drug war. Go look it up. It's not perfect (no policy is), but it seems to have a net positive effect.

By the way, Ron Paul didn't say he wanted to abolish tobacco. He said that as a libertarian, he even allowed cigarettes, which he mentioned is one of the deadliest drugs in the United States. Smoke another cigarette, Jimmy.

Ron Paul should’ve been elected President as a Libertarian over Vice President George Bush of the Republican Party and Democrat Michael Dukakis in 1988 Or Ron Paul as a Republican should’ve defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2008 Or Ron Paul as a Republican should’ve won over Mitt Romney in the Primaries and then defeat Democrat President Barack Obama in 2012 Or Rand Paul should’ve left the Republican Party and joined the Libertarian Party bringing several Key Republicans with him making America a 3 Party System, and then win the Libertarian Nomination with Gary Johnson as his VP Running Mate deadlock the Electoral College between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Hillary Clinton and maybe Mitt Romney Running as a Never Trump Party Ticket putting Romney in 4th and Rand Paul of the Libertarian Party in 3rd place, causing the Republican House to elect Rand Paul of the Libertarian Party President over Donald Trump of the Republican Party and Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party, then VP Biden can break the 50-50 tie in the Senate for Tim Kaine of Democratic Party Vice President. Then Paul could make Gary Johnson a Cabinet Member and if something happened to Rand Paul after he got in making Democrat Tim Kaine President, Gary Johnson would put him straight, and give the Libertarian Party Momentum, then the Libertarian Party could defeat many Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate in 2018. Then many Democrats and Republicans would leave the parties and join the Libertarian Party and gain more and more seats and momentum in 2020 and then the Libertarian Party can cause either The Democratic Party or The Republican Party to completely collapse. Or Rand Paul could’ve won the Republican Nomination in 2016 over Trump and the Republicans with it with out Trump, and make Ted Cruz his Running Mate and then defeat either Secretary Hillary Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders or Senator Elizabeth Warren with or without Jesse Ventura Running as an Independent in 2016 & win a Second Term in 2020 against any Democrat and help Ted Cruz Win In 2024 And then Nominate Tulsi Gabbard for the Democratic Nomination and elect her President in 2028 and re-elect Tulsi Gabbard In 2032. Or Rand Paul could or have ran as a Libertarian or a Republican in 2020 or 2024 or 2028 or 2032 with either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in Office as of now or even if Bernie Sanders Won In 2016.

What’d be very cool is if Ron Paul ran for President as a Libertarian in 1984 and defeated President Ronald Reagan of the Republican Party and Former Vice President Walter Mondale of the Democratic Party Or Ron Paul should’ve ran as a Libertarian or a Republican in 1996 and defeated Democrat President Bill Clinton and Colin Powell Running as a Republican or Independent whether Ron Paul ran as a Libertarian if Bob Dole was the GOP Nominee and Colin Powell as an Independent Or Ron Paul could’ve ran for the Republican Nomination and defeated George W. Bush, John McCain and Collin Powell and make Jesse Ventura his Running Mate and then Ron Paul as a Republican can defeat Democrat Vice President Al Gore or deadlock the Electoral College to force Congress to elect Ron Paul and the 50-50 tie in the senate to be broken for Joe Lieberman led by VP Al Gore in 2000 Or Ron Paul could’ve ran as Republican In 2004 whether George W. Bush, John McCain, Colin Powell, Al Gore or Bob Dole were President especially after 9/11.

The irony being that just 8 years after this was filmed Morton was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to have a lung removed. He used to be a member of National Smokers Alliance (think of it as a Libertarian group for smokers) but after his diagnosis quit and became a staunch anti-smoking advocate. He would die 5 years later in 2001. One of the most shocking moments for me was when Morton says that if the government outlawed cigs he'd be happy because then he would quit. The advice of a doctor sitting in front of him meant nothing to him so long as the government says it's okay to smoke. Stunning.

There is a very clear difference between government regulation and big government regulation. Government regulation you can point to the exact place in the Constitution that authorizes that regulation - the majority of the time being found in the Enumerated Powers Clause. By design, the Federal Government is only authorized to perform a very limited number of tasks that could not reasonably be performed by the individual states or the people, with a bias towards leaving things to the states. Big government regulation, you can't point to the exact place in the Constitution that authorizes the regulation, or you have to reference the Commerce Clause, the General Welfare Clause, or call the regulation a "tax" because it can't be justified through normal means.

I really hate to say this about the deceased, but part of the issue here is Mort, and the crowd in general, had no concept of personal responsibility - they could only comprehend the Reagan-Thatcher brand of the idea. Mort himself died of lung cancer from smoking for years, Ron Paul did say "no", in his personal life. Sort of helps you understand the difference between statist and libertarian philosophy. Sadly, all of the great evidence and legality Ron Paul mentioned went completely over their heads.

By the way, I love that someone updated Morton's Wiki to include "He also blamed tobacco companies for lying to consumers about cigarettes, although congressman Ron Paul (also a physician) had advised him, in 1988, while on his show, that smoking was highly unhealthy and responsible for a huge number of deaths every year." Who ever did that is a champ!

5:31 I love how Mort perks up after RP tells him to stick to the issue, wind up like he's going to make some great intellectual point, then says, "If slime like you were in the White House, I'd puke on you," to thunderous applause. Mort would later say his show was nowhere near as trashy as Jerry Springer. I think this show makes the typical Springer atmosphere look like a Chomsky debate. Sure, Mort's show addressed more serious issues, but the manner he used to address them is so deplorable.

Sakke L. Yea it would still happen. When prohibition ended people still drank and drove, people still got into bar fights. And people still went to jail for drunk driving, public intox, or anything related to alcohol. If somebody's addicted they're going to take that drug or narcotic whether it's legal or not.
@JohnSmith09123
@JohnSmith09123 9 жыл бұрын
Sakke L. Medically proven fact heroine you take one dose you're automatically addicted. You don't just take drugs like heroine, pcp, methamphetamine, or any other *highly* addictive drug you can't just shut that off. Quitting from cigarettes is *easier* than quitting PCP, Heroine, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, LSD, Ecstasy etc. That's why they're considered *highly addictive* narcotics. People don't just stop taking them and go well it's no longer cool any more my addiction has been kicked.

Wow this is a side of Ron Paul I haven't seen before. Love it! Not sure it's the most productive way but how do you argue with idiots? Who was the woman and where is she now. Love to know what she thinks of the massive drug war effort now, arresting parents and putting them in goal, putting their kids into care for smoking a toke, massive amounts of tax payer dollars going to private prisons and police efforts instead of real crime. We can see why he was fighting so passionately now. Go Ron Paul

All this stupidity.. It really saddens me how such an intelligent man who comes up with solid facts and ideas to get rid of these problems gets slagged of not by valid arguments to disarm his ideas, but childish swearing. "If you were in the white house I'd puke on you." "You could only be president of Disneyland." This isn't a debate. Ron Paul is just so clever and yet people rather cheer at insults made by people who haven't done any research in human rights, economics etc. I will always look up to Ron Paul and it truly baffles me how INSANELY stupid some people can be..

The Founding Fathers that wrote the Constitution were beer drinkers (because distilling water for beer was the only way to get healthy water), and was written in taverns in Philadelphia. And they all grew hemp. Prohibition failed horribly, and actually created the "drug trade" that exists today. Criminals learned a lot from Prohibition Era. Legalizing all drugs could work.... but not in this repressed society that isn't even allowed to show boobs on TV. The United States is still the best country... but, wow... we are so scared of EVERYTHING. Because we are TOLD to be scared. Lighten up, people. Oh, by the way, I broke my arm falling off of the monkey bars. I learned not to do it again ! I did not get a trophy when I only "participated".... no.... I LOST ! Deal with it ! They keep saying, "It's all about the children". As George Carlin wisely said, "Fuck the children ! You fuck up, you learn not to fuck up again !"
