I have found myself going back to the old cartridges. They are more interesting and with some of the newer loading components you can really get the performance that wasn’t possible before.

I'd love to see you do archery stuff, it can be challenging and fun. Might also consider other styles of hunting such as spot and stalk or anything that's not a blind over a feeder at 100yrds. lot of options to make it more challenging. Possibly try public land only. May consider hunting with a pistol only, or traditional side-lock muzzleloaders. Go even further and do flint lock, possibly even a smooth bore. In archery, you could opt for a recurve or long bow as opposed to a modern compound, or you could even go full traditional with all wood bow and arrows with natural fletching and no sights. Nothing wrong with a blind over a feeder at a known distance to put food on the table, but if you're looking to bring back the challenge and excitement there are plenty of options. I would absolutely love to see you do any or all of those just for fun.

Great interview...as an ok at best prs shooter i totally agree with ron on his hunting comments...you absolutley owe it to the animal to make a clean shot...the fun part of hunting is getting in close and testing ur wit against the animals...gettin in bow range of an elk is proper heart racing fun...some erik cortina hunting videos out west would be awesome

2 great guys for sure. Talking about the 220 Swift, and Eric....you mentioned necking down a 6.5 PRC to .224 cal. I just built a .224 SAUM AI, throated for the 90gr Berger. The speeds I have got with limited testing so far is dismal. The highest velocity I have seen so far is about 3400 using IMR 4955. I still believe that should produce much higher velocities with the 70-90gr class of bullets. If you can think of other combinations to try, I am all ears. Great interview with Spomer, thank you!!

What a nice conversation. Like you both guys very much. I'm hunting for 6 years now and still have problems with hunting fever. Two years ago we were on a hog hunt at a corn field, while the farmers harvested. We sat there several ours until the corn was nearly completely chopped. My buddy, sitting on the opposite side of the remaining corn told me via radio, that the pigs are running over to me and will probably exit directly in front of me. Instantly my heartbeat went from 60 to 180 and I started shaking like a compactor. He was right, the pigs exited in front of me, but I was unable to shoot. If he hadn't told me that the pigs were coming, I might have had a chance.

This is one of my new favorite episodes. I liked the Ryan Cleckner and Frank Galli episodes. I most often trust the skills and advice of retired snipers. I have been watching Ron Spomer for years and value his hunting advice because that is primarily my activity. Mostly for whitetail, sometimes feral hog. And I enter a state drawing for mule deer every season in the western part of Texas (Cap Rock Canyon SP, south of Amarillo, north of Abilene, a bit east of both.) The TPWD description of that hunt is to expect rural camping, compartment style hunting, frigid conditions, and shots at least 200 yards. So, it pays to work on distance and I am good to 300 yards because that is the best that I can see, even through the 8x of my rangefinder. 1 MOA rifle I have will get me a shot in the pie plate behind the shoulder at 300 yards or less. I have had the shots .516 MOA (.54 inches) apart at 100 yards, but that just means that it is a 1 MOA rifle, on average, unless I can produce paper to show a 5 round group. Turns out that I cannot hunt a mule deer buck by putting salt on his tail. I remember a video Ron made where he was using his Mossberg Patriot 7 mm Rem Mag to hunt an elk. Talk about a hearty beast. It took 3 shots. Ron was shooting from sticks and having to track ahead of a now running bull. So, yeah, it is not always about all the transfer of energy but about what the round can do once it is inside. And still, the animal can make it a while on just steam, after the heart is faltering and the lungs are faltering. And I would definitely watch an RSO podcast with Erik on there.

I've been a huge fan of Ron's for years and even read a bunch of his older writings even though I'm a little younger then you two. I love shooting I've been a full blown gun nut for years but it all started with hunting. When hunting season starts everything else stops I think I even go through a little bit of withdrawals when it's over... LOL

The 220swift improved is the 220 Rocket. It was one of Roy Weatherby's first cartridges! (My Dad just did one, in memory of a legendary rifle from his childhood). 22creedmoor is the new .224 speed demon, with good brass from several manufacturers. (Its a fun one 😉) I was really surprised to see you chatting with Ron. It was fun to watch two of the big dogs from different aspects of the shooting world talk shop! I watch you both for very different reasons, so it was great to see the collaboration. These interviews are great, and I look forward to the next!

Yes, it's true that the 22-284 has been done. I found it in the Handloader's manual of cartridge conversions. The load listed is a 50gr. Bullet 53.0/4350 4040 fps. Talk about a need for speed.

There are only a handful of "Gun-Tubers" I can tolerate listening to. Ron Spomer is one of them. Despite being old-school, he is VERY with the times and unwaveringly objective in his analysis. (He cuts through the B.S. and hype) Many old school gun guys are very: "ya don't need this, ya don't need that, back in my day, etc, etc) Many young guys think the hot new cartridge is SO MUCH better than the old "outdated" stuff. Ron Spomer is not like that. He acknowledges that technology is changing and not everyone is going to like it or be on board, but that doesn't mean it's not happening and if something "NEW" is just a repackaged old cartridge with nearly identical performance, he calls that out too. I find myself watching his videos just WAITING for him to cut through the bullshit and start breaking hearts and he never lets me down. In addition, it is VERY obvious he is an accomplished writer, because I think his story telling skill is second to none. Great stuff Erik. This interview certainly checked that box of getting outside of your own "echo chamber".

Glad to hear you want to hunt again! Just build a 284 win or shehane. Bullets are what will matter for hunting. You can shoot a Acubond LR 168 grain at 2850 in a straight 284 and kill damn near anything in the world. Your reamer you have will be the perfect freebore length they are longer the the Berger 168. You will just need a long action repeater and head west!

Love this channel and love your accomplishments, but you know, I don't need to explain the reason the 6.5 CM is a superior round. @@BelieveTheTarget it’s the same diameter yes but it’s longer, which means you can have a faster twist rate. I believe it also has less head spacing. I know I run mine 1thousand off the lands so, it’s not the same. It’s the small things that add up to make a big difference in my opinion

Wow, very surprised Ron was on here! I'm being an Adam Henery when I say this, but he seems to be the Mr. Rodgers or Capt. Kangaroo of hunting. I dont mean to be the Grouch from Sesame St. To me, he talks as if he's talking to children and stays very surface level. I actually find Ron very irritating! Especially in his earllier videos. Even today, he still seems stuck in the 1980's. I don't say this proudly! Possibly, to be fair, I haven't watched or read his better work. IDK But in saying all this, I actually enjoyed him in the video. Kinda glad Erik brought him on. But I highly doubt I'll start watching him.

Gee, I thought all shooting was about hitting the target. Hunting is target shooting where the shooter first has to locate the target, get into a steady firing position, calculate the distance then release the shot into the x ring…hunting is target shooting with sorting the variables on the fly.
