There is no question it was intentional. Ronaldinho positioned himself like he was going to cross it in the box but he noticed that Seaman was standing advanced from the post and when the referee blew the whistle he ran right away and kicked it straight into the goal.

Now he did admit he was just trying make Seamen track back and maybe force him to hit it over the bar for a corner or if he got lucky it would go in the net. So, as a Brazilian, I remember watching this game and I always thought this goal meant as a cross. Recently I learned that Rivaldo asked Ronaldinho why he kicked the ball that way. Rivaldo explained it as: "After the game, I asked him and he told me he had studied Seaman and knew that he had a tendency to take two steps forward in this kind of free kick, so he tried to surprise him... and surprise him he did". At 0:30 you can see Seaman taking a small step forward and then correcting it, but it was too late.

I can't say I've rewatched this goal since 2002. When I was at school.. But.. I can't believe the argument or confusion whether it was a shot or a cross... CLEARLY Ronaldinho, one of the cleanest and skilful strikers was aiming on goal. I wouldn't say he was expecting it to go in, but it was worth a punt and it paid off..

Yup. You can spot Ronaldinho measuring the shot up because he's judged Seaman's off-line positioning. Misjudged crosses are not taken with that measured pace and spin on the ball or lofted above at that angle. It struck me as ridiculous at the time that this was not included among the 'best goal' highlights of that tournament on UK TV because England put their defeat down to Seaman's positioning when he was in fact in the right place had the ball been crossed to the box as anyone would have expected would be done. It was a sublime piece of skill from Ronaldinho and in fact the best goal of that Cup. Even Seaman, although he has a reason of course for saying so, has stated he doesn't believe this goal was a fluke.

Since then, we've seen a few similar goals where free kicks have been taken in outlandish positions to catch keepers off their line, and it was clear Ronaldinho meant it. But the unexpectedness of the goal caused embarrasment, so it was easier to call it a fluke and cast blame.

He looks at the strikers to play the ball back stick, then looks at the Gk and sees he's off his line so quickly runs up and strikes a pass/chip shot at goal! Amazing technique and footballing brain.. When you are a Legend them unbelievable moments come naturally. 10s of thousands of hours practicing for that one big stage moment.. Pure class!
