My "why" was so simple! I was drowning in chores and laundry and waisting my time on stuff shuffling and stress. ❤PS: all those cool benefits of declttering that you look forward to? There will be MANY MORE than you can imagine now. My life situation is SO CHANGED now. My clutter is gone but so are 95% of my bad habits! What?! Clutter is gone and productivity is UP. I rest more. I work out more. Everything is affected

If you keep decluttering, that means you keep shopping. You only need to declutter every 5-6 years and in between, you need to monitor shopping habits and purchase mindfully. This is what works for me.

Decluttering is like routine maintenance for me. It doesn’t necessarily reflect a mindless overconsumption. Lives change, values change. Anyone who’s had kids knows how many different sizes kids will grow out of in a 5-6 year span, let alone how much school work and art projects will come home.

Who are you to tell me what I need to do?
@way-cute
@way-cute Жыл бұрын
Yeah no, you need to keep decluttering. Gifts come in, mail comes in, you inherit things, things get inadvertently left at your house and the person never picks them up. Decluttering needs to be thought of as routine an activity as doing dishes or dusting, not one and done. A HUGE decluttering? Yes, if you don't make it routine. But if you do make it routine, you'll only do the big one once, rather than a nightmare every 5-6 years.

I feel like our generation is less joyful, less outgoing and less focused because of this tech world - that is why we needed to create this "decluttering idea". I know that the whole decluttering thing became popular, I did it myself and I did consider myself as someone minimalistic. However.... The most beautiful memories I have are always connected with places and houses full of stuff. For example my Grandma's home, our little holiday property (I live in Poland, those types of properties are nothing like big, expensive american ones). I also know those memories are connected with people, not only places BUT I remember the coziness od grandma's blankets, pillows, all pictures she collected, the coziness around created by physical things. And she was very happy human being! Also, even she had a lot of things, it only took 1 week and 2 people to clean, sell, give or keep everything. It was a beutiful journey through all memories. I am glad that she did not declutter anything befor her death! This was the precious gift from her - going through our memories connected with physical things, the smell of them, once again, for the last time. Until only "spiritual" memories are left...

hi Mishka ! 😊 ( little mouse? 🤔). . I live in America, my family came here from Poland . I loved my Babcia so much and unfortunately I was not able to receive her belongings after she passed. I have an adult child and since I am the keeper of our family history (mostly photographs, some documents,etc.) and I've moved (& downsized ) Now I find that it's much more important to pass on those priceless memories, not furniture or decor . Our children grow up and create their own homes ; they don't want a replica of their parents house . ASK your adult children WHAT they WANT ( either to take now , or when you pass on ) Make sure you leave specific instructions in your Will ; or Probate Court will make that decision ! My best advise : Set up your home for the 'Season of Life' you are going into , BEFORE it gets here ! I was a VERY healthy, athletic woman , played sports, coached School Sports, and always thought I would be that way . ONE major car accident CHANGED EVERYTHING ! I lived on a 2nd Floor with NO ELEVATOR , and came home in a wheelchair ! ( walk through your entire house, but measure as if you too were in a wheelchair) 👀 I was determined to prove the doctors wrong ; after having multiple Total Reconstructive Spine Surgeries they told me I would spend the rest of my life in the wheelchair 😲... I told them God needs me to walk again ! 💪 Today I am walking (and swimming) but I can do very little when it comes to bending/ lifting, etc. One day we all will be older, not as strong or agile as when we're young. That is a big "WHY" for me ! I'm trying my best to make room in my home , have less to dust, less laundry to wash , less dishes & pots to wash & put away . More Time to Enjoy Life & Spend with Loved Ones. Do something everyday . Don't do so much in one day that you get tired & give up . Teach your children to organize & contain their belongings. Let them choose toys they don't play with to either Sell at Garage Sale (let them KEEP the MONEY/ Teach them to SAVE /open their own Savings Account ) or Take the Items to a Donation Center or FAMILY Shelter to SHARE with children Less fortunate . Good Luck !

With the passing of relatives, we found ourselves drowning in four households worth of stuff. Tack on a home remodel, two teenagers, and running our own business, everything was stacked to the ceiling in some areas. Certain spaces were pulling double duty depending on the season. It has taken several years but we finished some of the primary renovations, our children are now grown and have moved out, we have had a few yard sales, made many trips to the Goodwill, and many items have been sold on Ebay. We can almost breath again, but most of that was just the duplicates we had inherited, etc. Now I feel like we can buckle down on what is no longer necessary and really tackle the sentimental stuff. We don't want our children to be in this position when we are gone. One area at a time.

I originally started decluttering because my aunt said that she would help me paint my room this summer, the 2nd reason is because my dad was diagnosed with dementia(?), so it's a grantee that eventually we are going to move so I want to go though stuff before we have to move. It will save time. The 3rd point is I am finally at a point where I feel like I am leaving the hobbies that I use to like behind and wanting to change.

I appreciate this on multiple levels. I got diagnosed autistic about 1.5y ago, and am trying to figure out who I am without all the trash of societal norms cluttering me up. I’mma have a look at the values sheet 🙂 Also last summer I got married and moved into my husband’s house that he inherited from his parents. It’s full of their stuff, most of which we don’t want. We can’t sort through/arrange my stuff until we get the inherited stuff out, which is further complicated by some of my stuff being in the way. Plus I have a lot of physical health problems, which further complicates everything I’m/we’re trying to do 😤 If you got to this point, thank you for reading my essay about how I appreciate this video, lmao 😆

Just in case it's relevant to your health issues you might wanna look up histamine intolerance, mcas and oxalate issues, it seems a lot of autistic ppl have issues with those things. Take care!

This has been my experience pretty much. I actually rarely buy stuff, most of my clothing are hand-me-downs, and the rest I have bought many years ago or clothes I made myself. Furniture and decor I have inherited. Right now I'm sorting through things that belonged to my mom who passed away a few months ago. I love so many of her things and I want to keep them all, but I'm not sure if that's actually practical. I decided not to pressure myself and go little by little, because most of what I own has a purpose, even if it is only for sentimental value.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had set aside March to declutter, but life got in the way, then April, now I am halfway through May and every day something gets in the way of starting the decluttering process. I woke up this morning after having nightmares about loss so I know that something deeper is preventing me from making a start. Now I have the tools that I need to break through the logjam. No more living in a sea of boxes--I want to be able to move around my flat freely and get more work done.
@iyaayas

All it takes is just 1 box. (Took me years to get to that 1 box.) I bought a bunch of small, collapsible buckets from amazon recently and found that by using them (and a trash can) to sort items from that one box, I can move small numbers of items to specific rooms without putting them away. I just dump the items in the room and come back to focus on outting away items in the one room containing the one box that In focused on. I call it a win as long as I make one box empty in a day. When the one box is empty, I take it to one of the "Dump Rooms", collect everything I dumped in that room that I intend to out away in there, and place it in that specific one box. It contains the clutter for now while I declutter my house one room at a time. My Kitchen is almost fully decluttered. Now I can organize it in such a way that nothing new will go in unless I get rid of something old to make space. My Current Project is the living room. I collect sort things to go to the different rooms and use the boxes in each room to collect those items (without sorting). It's taking me forever but I finally have a kitchen (2 months of work plus finally getting help from my kids and spouse to reclaim it).

you know what, that's one of the first things the kondo method teaches you, "what kind of life do you want to live? why do you want to declutter? then you reply and she asks again why? , and so on and so forth" . Then The Minimalists they say, "what are your values?" and Joshua from Becoming Minimalist says one interesting thing, "what if instead of deciding what to discard you started with what you actually need?" Then, for me, Am I trying to compensate for something lacking in my life? Deciding, is the key. And also, are we ready to face the opinions of others if your house seems bare because that's YOUR lifestyle? Nice one Ron!💖👌

Thank you for bringing up the values. Past couple of months I've been spiraling about how I "have to" declutter everything, but then I realised that at my core values lie self-expression and creativity, so while I do have a lot of stuff, these things do yield to my values (like craft materials). Courage is certainly needed, especially when you need to tell your mom to stop buying you crap 😂

As someone who is a collector, I realize that I used to buy things and hoard collections based on momentarily feelings and moments. I started collecting Superman stuff after seeing the new Superman movie a few years ago and then branched out to Superheros and beyond, then a few months later they started to collect dust and ended up in storage where now I am pulling it out and selling it. The trick I use is, if you want to buy something online that you don’t need, add it to your cart and leave it there for a few days or even a week or more. If by then you still want it as much as you did initially then buy it. However if the feeling has changed and you realize that you only wanted it because of short term feelings. As for the store, I take a photo of something and go home. Sometimes when you’re at the store, we can work up feelings to purchase things when we go home we don’t really want it. Take a photo of something you weather to buy, go home and look at it. If you look at it at home and realize oh, like I don’t really want it doesn’t fit in my home. Be happy you didn’t buy it.

The first time I watched "the minimal mom" she said something like "if you have less furniture, there's less to vacuum" and "if you have fewer dishes, they can't pile up into a huge dirty dish mountain" and that spoke to me! 😅 I don't go as far as she does (only enough plates for her family) because hospitality and having frequent drop in visitors is a huge part of the life I want. I have three children, and often they have friends over, and when the parents come to pick them up, they might stop in for coffee, and that turns into a lot of people. I love it. So, easily cleaned house and enough extra to easily accommodate an additional 3-8 people in the house. ❤ It does make decluttering decisions easier.

I JUST got home from work and while driving home, told myself I need to rid of things, AGAIN. Why? Because there are things I want to do (to do list and many projects I’ve not even started), but feel like I have little time. I started, and then stopped when I silently asked myself, “Why can’t I focus right now?” Decluttering for me is a way of removing things that will distract me. At the same time, I’ve noticed that when I get rid of stuff, I tend to stress on it later when I need it for something. I end up buying whatever IT is again. Focus and time management has been a problem of mine. When I had absolutely nothing due to a house fire, I focused like never before, so a part of me is trying to get back to that and it’s been difficult. I had no choice before. Now I do. But it’s still difficult because instead of just creating a routine to mange my time and focus on the more important things, I’m distracted with the less important things. It’s been a cycle since childhood. Diagnosed with ADD and OCD. Right now I want to rid of everything and start over, just so I can focus but I know I’ll be shopping for the same stuff and more if I do. This video was somewhat helpful and I’m glad you shared it. Thank you.

Everytime I see a video of yours I leave with a new perspective and something else to think of. It's such a challenge but I love that you suggest getting to your core values- which gets to the heart of the matter for me. I like your vibe. Thank you for sharing this video. For me, decluttering was about rearranging my entire life after a painful break up, psychological breakdown, and recovering from cancer. I wanted my space to be something that constantly inspired me, that gave me space to do the things that I loved, and that had space for me to walk around. I didn't have a lot of "stuff" to begin with, but I just had mess everywhere with no real system. I'm still in the decluttering phase (in fact, as I look up, my floor is just covered in crap lol), but I've finally reached the 85% mark after 8 freaking years of all this. I also love what your father taught you, that quote resonated with me deeply and I'm putting it up as a sticky note on my wall now. =) Thank you again, and kind regards!!!!

Hey Marcia! I totally understand your reservation, but I want to encourage you to not view a decluttered life as an aesthetic or color scheme. If you love color…please embrace color! I don’t want you to feel like you have to give up color to declutter. The thing to keep in mind is that a decluttered life is a life that’s filled with the things you value. In order to make room for those things we have to get clear on what we value first (core values) and then remove the clutter that doesn’t align with that. If you love color, embrace it like I said..there are tons of ways you can add color to your home, closets, and life without those things feeling overwhelming or cluttered.

Great thoughts and tips! What are the essentials for life and work? (And these change with time.) All the non-essential stuff is up for discussion, especially if you share work and life space with others. Some compromises are inevitable. Decluttering without the support of others can cause a lot of tension. So, a good degree of flexibility and tolerance is necessary. Bon courage to all those who are attempting to do this!

Wow, I would have needed it two years go. But while thinking over (NOT overthinking) my life back then, I arrived at similar conclusions: 1. What is my mission? (the Why) 2. What do I need to live a good life (it came down to a pyramid of needs) with order and structure and safety at the bottom tier. 3. Creating space by sorting out stuff in boxes: Keep, Donate, Toss. I ruminated about writing it down for about two years, yes, I do tend to overthink, until I was at an all-time low and I wrote it all down. And my experience from software development kicked in and I was able to split it up into processes, activities, and tasks. Now I have a list that I can follow without too much threat of overwhelm. Plus I organized myself some help of people that simply do nothing more than pick up stuff that I cannot (I'm mobility-impaired), holding open a huge garbage sack and carrying it outside to be picked up. Those folks, from a county volunteer service, do not try to discuss why I want to keep what, which is difficult to achieve with family and friends (I'm speaking from experience). The donate boxes were a lot of fun, a friend of mine brought it to her workplace where there were not too well off women with school kids and she reported to me that the donate boxes were plundered completely hardly they came into her office. That made me feel good inside. Now that I have created space, I'm down to the nitty gritty of detail sorting, which will take a lot of patience and determination. But I'm in the frame of mind that I want to get it done. I live in central Europe and the volunteer service was fairly easy to come by, nonetheless it took me over a year to acknowledge to myself that I needed help. After the failures with friends and family I decided to accept the help of the volunteer service. I have already checked off quite a few items on my list, yet I'm far from being finished. Even if I do only a few things every day, each thing I do is a contributor to success. That keeps me on track. Thank you Ronald for your video.

Thank you. This was what I was trying to figure. Cant explain how accurate these points are and alignment to my values. I'm not clean freak or need order. I'm free flowing. But my why has pushed me to change how my room looks, not because of other people's perception of my room. My why is I want to be me but not overwhelmed by me.

Thanks! I'd recently had a shift in my circumstances that was starting to work finally towards my ideal life. What you said resonates with why I think I'm finally getting the hang of painlessly restocking my life, which does mean decluttering, but simply by clearing out all the stuff literally in the way of doing the things I want and value. On reflection, I see that I have started focusing on my 'why' and that's why it's easier.

One thing I learned is my storage/organizing habits just needed to change for a LOT of my decluttering needs. I’ve learned I have an easier time with walls FULL of shelves and hooks. I 1) love to see my things and use them more, 2) it’s so much easier to remember where things go, and 3) decluttering by placing an item up is easier than sorting through drawers. When I have my stuff on display I do in fact use 99% of it frequently enough to make it more of a burden to toss and replace than to learn to store it properly.

I had to declutter for very down-to-earth reasons. I had serious trouble focusing all day, every day and less things helped me have clearer mind. I also didn't like all the cleaning and upkeep that comes with more clothes. If there's some core value in it for me, it's environmental reasons - I do urge people to buy less and take good care of their things, to really think if they need something, to not impulse buy and to fight for their right to repair electronic devices. Less consumerism - less trash.

1:40 - Why: A comfortable place to relax and greater Safe Spaces for my toddlers to play freely. 2:15 - Core Values: God, Family, Integrity, Service, Excellence. 4:20 - Courage: Swimming against the current has been easy for me since childhood. Now, saying no to a friend who spends her very limited resources on things she doesn't need then cries for help to obtain the things she does need because she didn't save her limited resources for needs.....that's hard. Especially difficult when she wants people to mind their own business. 5:50 - Consistency: I feel this. 6:25 - Structure: Avoiding being overwhelmed is most difficult for me.
