Mrs. Gandhi's speech was impeccable and shows how Indian leaders were clear about National interest first and care for others. Her speech is relevant today and tomorrow. She was class apart. Salute to her for keeping Indians head high in difficult times.

Indira Ghandi committed Genocide of Sikhs which were a tiny minority. The Sikh Genocide of 1984 has been recognized by States of California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ontario to name a few and many local assemblies in the United States. It may soon be recognized at the federal level like the Armenian Genocide. She was also responsible for mass murder through forced sterilizations of mostly hindu women in 1974-1975.

She was an ‘Iron lady’ in real sense…we should be indebted to her for her relentless upliftment efforts from the clutches of poverty and post-colonial ravages in India, sometimes even at the cost of her own interests (read as defeat in 1977 GE). Her speech was so simple yet very powerful. Reagan was astonished by her articulate, he could not keep his eyes away from her so are all others who watched her. She explained India' foreign policy in such a vivid clarity that doesn't need any questions. This is why she is the magnet and the powerful engine of India's foreign relation.

The people of Bangladesh will never forget this great Prime Minister of India. A token of love and affection to Mrs Gandhi was shown at the Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Uddayan) in Dhaka on 18 March 1972 by over a million people. Also China didn't have many religions and languages dividing them. Don't compare India to any other country. India is like no other. Say what you want but Indira Gandhi was a patriot of first order. 3 of the most courageous and bravest leader of India have been Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, Indira Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. During Bangladesh creation Nixon could not move a finger to help Pakistan because whole of USA was with Indira Gandhi such was her world leadership skill. Listen to her speech in those few sentences she creates, clearly communicates and controls the framework of discussion that she will have with Reagan.

In World politics no nation can be a "non-enemy" simply by remaining a sycophant to the all the superpowers. You have to choose or prioritize some over the others based on the value system of your country, otherwise your existence would be irrelevant. It's the reason why India choose to be socialist in their approach in that time of coldwar. You don't know enough to talk about this. Because of the systematically imposed gynocentric perspective you guys only think about your survival, but not about the ways in which you want to survive. How is it anyway different from being dead? It is not. But Your survivalist gynocentric worldview tells you that life's purpose is only to physically survive, like a $l@√€, by giving up your own ideas of living and succumbing to the ideas imposed by the incumbent superpower(s). Stop recommending your personal bedroom preference to succumb to your partner's authority as our foreign policy.

Such a lovely straightforward, sincere and concise comments. No chest beating or pompousness. It is inappropriate for today's leaders to demean the leaders of the past. After all, they too have toiled hard to advance India at that time. Their ideology at that time may have been but they too had national interest and development as a high priority

Very courageous lady. The nationalization of banks 1969 helped India to reach out all segments of people both in agriculture and small scale industries. Banking concept which was largely confined to metro and big towns was taken to villages. It gave Indian entrepreneurs self confidence. The nuclear programme got a boost. The Drug Policy Act 1970 made India a leading a supplier of life saving Drugs in the world. In 1971 Bangladesh war, our beloved soldiers and Ms. Indira Gandhi showed the world their proper place.

I think Ronald Reagan is the only President of the United States who placed hand on his chest when they played the Indian National Anthem. What a respect. People should learn from this. He knew how to respect other countries.

I didn’t understand why she was fidgeting w. Her pocketbook and made no effort to look at him through Reagan’s speech w/c do clearly was addressing directly to her. However, i was impressed by her quite powerful speech when right away she compared US’s youth to India’s ancient but rich culture. I think that immediately put both countries at par w/ each other in preparation for upcoming dialogue & negotiations. It was a brilliant speech! Meanwhile so proud of Reagan displaying great respect and never even took his eyes off of her during her whole speech. What a gracious leader!
