Part of tradition, I don't think we'd change it. More importantly it makes ours unique. That was Mrs Gandhi. Today's generation is being misled. Having seen her a number of times, I must admit she was wonderful though she made some mistakes due to circumstances. This was the era of Soviet and US conflict and she kept a good balance with both . That was diplomacy at its best.

Also China didn't have many religions and languages dividing them. Don't compare India to any other country. India is like no other. It's way harder to lead India than small countries like Philippines, Singapore, hongkong. It's easier to lead USA, China than India. You've to balance everything. She wasn't perfect and matter of fact no PM in history of India has been perfect everyone had their positives and negatives. She was fierce and feared nobody that's both her positive and negative side. It was during her reign India became a defence power house she layed the foundation of nuclear power as India tested it's first nuclear bomb under her. Made alliance with Soviet Union which helped strengthen India on all fronts it even resulted in the first Indian to reach Space (Rakesh Sharma and Indian Air force pilot). She definitely isn't the worst.

Say what you want but Indira Gandhi was a patriot of first order. 3 of the most courageous and bravest leader of India have been Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, Indira Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. During Bangladesh creation Nixon could not move a finger to help Pakistan because whole of USA was with Indira Gandhi such was her world leadership skill. The hell do you know about 1971 war, when the US deployed it's Navy's Seventh Fleet in the bay of bengal to attack India in favour of Pakistan. Even British & China was involved in this. Thanks to the iron lady Indira who shook hands with the soviet Union. Russia and Vietnam helped us during those tough times and we freed east Pakistan which is now Bangladesh. Don't talk about friendship in regards of these snakes.

And yes we were not strong at that time economically but very strong on determination, our leader not cried for 200 year of British and all, instead they focus on growth and well being, yes it achieved slowly but we didn't complaint of that. She also Nationalized Petroleum Companies like Burmah Shell to Bharat Petroleum etc. to cut foriegn dominance in Indian soil & also keep the prices stable in Indian Market.

If she was a dictator, why would she not reimpose the emergency when she was reelected? Even Atal Bihari Vajpayee described her as Durga. I agree that later leaders except for Rajiv Gandhi were not as capable and the Emergency was the darkest period of Indian democracy but don't deny respect where it's due as the real king of the emergency was Sanjiv Gandhi not Indra

Very courageous lady. The nationalization of banks 1969 helped India to reach out all segments of people both in agriculture and small scale industries. Banking concept which was largely confined to metro and big towns was taken to villages. It gave Indian entrepreneurs self confidence. The nuclear programme got a boost. The Drug Policy Act 1970 made India a leading a supplier of life saving Drugs in the world. In 1971 Bangladesh war, our beloved soldiers and Ms. Indira Gandhi showed the world their proper place.

I didn’t understand why she was fidgeting w. Her pocketbook and made no effort to look at him through Reagan’s speech w/c do clearly was addressing directly to her. However, i was impressed by her quite powerful speech when right away she compared US’s youth to India’s ancient but rich culture. I think that immediately put both countries at par w/ each other in preparation for upcoming dialogue & negotiations. It was a brilliant speech! Meanwhile so proud of Reagan displaying great respect and never even took his eyes off of her during her whole speech. What a gracious leader!
