It's sad watching this again. I want these guys to run in 2024. Both candidates were so well informed (overall). They were so polite and didn't hate each other. After the debate, the media thought Mondale won. The Wall Street Journal agonized that Reagan might be too old, even that he should be screened for possible senility. Nancy was very upset and believed that Ronnie had lost badly. I don't really see that in this video. Ron hesitated here and there, and Mondale was good, but he worked off of notes at times. I think Reagan was primarily running on his record and that's how he won 49 states (and Mondale won his home state of Minnesota by less than 4000 votes). I wish the country could come together like that again.

@wbthrower76 Жыл бұрын
@@frederickrapp5396 Also immediately after this first debate, the media began to point out (and rightly so), that Reagan seemed "off" and "aloof" at times during this debate. This was when the "age" issue began to be discussed in the press and if he may be too old to continue to serve effectively in the office. Reagan lost this one bad. The second debate however, he basically clinched the election with the response to the age question by the panelist with the "youth and inexperience" response referring to Fritz Mondale.

I loved this debate, tonight 37 years later, because Walter Mondale smiled at President Regan - and his comment "there you go again"... there is no humor between the party's any longer. That was a moment of humor, because President Regan's comment was not really in context - but it was expected. And Mr. Mondale appreciated that as well. When will our parties ever care about each other again? Really? Even Tip O'Neil had humor. Nancy Pelosi does not. I'll give credit to President Obama, he had a sense of humor. Nobody since has. Want a government that relates to us? That actually does have humor? That can get along with each other? That can accomplish what we need? I don't see that anymore, I truly do not. What party has those qualities? We need people that represent the majority of us, even if we did not vote for them as a party line decision.

It is not what was intended by the founding fathers, that is easily discerned by knowing our history. You served your term, you went back to your life afterwards (farm, business, whatever). The Alzheimer’s continued to progress throughout his 2nd term as evidenced by the Iran Contra Scandal where he was totally out of it, and disengaged from his Presidential responsibilities. Congress took pity on him, and refused to remove him, because they decided that the American people DID NOT want to see another failed Presidency. Did not watch this back in the 80's when this debate took place, but am extremely disappointed that neither man could say that they were born again believers in Jesus Christ and beat around the bush. Also, neither man had the guts to say that abortion was murder which it is!
@filledwithvariousknowledge27472 жыл бұрын
And that right here is the very problem. Born again Christian’s are fake lying pieces of shit that force others to accept their views even though 70% of the population opposes it. Piss off

I wondered at the exchange on religion also. I would have blown it by saying "It's none of your business! Americans religious beliefs is no one's business. You butt out of my business and I will make sure the government stays out of your business. Deal?"

Reagan yes, not Trump as his character is one of the worst I’ve ever seen by anyone in either party. He made good achievements in a couple of areas but his character ruins everything as by openly politically attacking political rivals rather than be willing to find areas of commonality it gives people who originally disagreed on policy reason to hate him. Reagan had class and worked well together with the Democrat controlled House and final 2 year Democrat Senate throughout the presidency

@@filledwithvariousknowledge2747 _"Great minds discuss ideas (MAGA), average minds discuss events (iMpEaChMeNt) and weak minds discuss people (Orange Man Bad)."_ - Eleanor Roosevelt. With that being said, Trump was an outsider. For he had *never* been into Politics until he came down the escalator in 2015. When you try and drain the bureaucratic "swamp" ... fake impeachments, hoaxes and fake news is what you get. Trump never needed or needs to play "nice" ... Let me ask you this, why does Trump have to be nice to Pelosi, McConnell, Schumer, Nadler and Feinstein etc. and the Fake News who have all dragged us into Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and now Ukraine? "Common sense" ... Reagan said. And so far, Trump is the only leading politician acting in that direction. I am sure Trump will bring down his tone and manner, when swamp politicians and Wall Street corporatists will do that too.

Truly bizarre how, in a country that makes a big deal about personal freedoms, having no faith or not being religious enough could block your chances of leading. Religion has no place in government.

A wise President. He knows that religion (Race Base) have no place in Politics. But a religion of personal faith as a Christian. Not many politicians can put this clearly as a duties to the nation that contain many faiths and races.
