Ronny, the K&N filter is a very bad choice! The K&N filter uses an applied gel which is applied to the gauze filter media. It’s this gel which captures the dust particles and offers very little dust holding capacity. When the gel is fully covered with dust, it will no longer filter the air and guess where the dust goes? You need to remove the filter and wash it (eg. kerosene) to remove the dust and then re-apply the gel. Furthermore, your engine bay is a hot environment which quickly dries out the gel, reducing its dust capturing efficiency. Also, have you asked Toyota if they honour your warranty using a K&N filter? A Donaldson blue media paper filter would be a much better filter choice which was developed for vehicles in dusty mines, and that’s what I fitted to my GU Patrol. If you want extra horsepower then just remove your air filter altogether and accept the serious damage to your engine. I’m a retired mechanical engineer with experience in air filtration - hope this info is useful to you and your subscribers.

On the MK 2 tank. spray paint/color the left yellow (or red) and the right Blue for water. That way no one will mistake what's what. Or put stickers on them labeling them. For you...you know. But what if you get injured or aren't around and some newbie isn't paying attention. Maybe even label the ends of the spouts. Yellow tape with the word "Diesel" on the driver side. Then blue tape with "Water" on it on the passenger side. Make it fool/idiot proof (or emergency proof). but I love it. that tank with the pumps is a great idea.

Over half a tonne in accessories is a very big surprise and when you consider the water and fuel tanks being empty and the unit yet to be loaded up with all your camping gear, clothing, fishing gear and anything else you need, yes mind blowing. You should have a competition on who can guess the final weight of the Luxie fully loaded. Loving yourself channel mate, you go over and beyond to explain, test and recommend quality products. Keep up your great work and I look forward to finding out what the final weight is of your Grand Outback Tourer.

Hi Ronny, the additional fuel filter you’re adding is actually going to br the 3rd filter. 2017 Hilux and upwards have this filter that’s near the starter. It’s hard to explain through but it’s nearby there. Part number 22390-0E010. So stock, you have 2 fuel filter, upper and lower. So really the 3rd fuel filter isn’t really necessary.

I guess we will see over time how the catch can and primary fuel filter go on the 1GDFTV. Another channel of a mechanic that specialises in 1KZs, 1KDs and 1GDs highly recommends you do not fit these items to your vehicle. Hopefully you are transparent enough to let us know or maybe even do a proof of concept video on the catch can. I'm not convinced it works that well myself yet. EGR plates with measured diameters holes seem to be another way to avoid this problem. I have seen a few other comments below regarding the load put on the engine from a primary filter and I tend to agree. While the primary filter works great on trucks and machinery that I work on, I'm not sure the pump in the 1GD is up to the task.

Ronny you mentioned a weight bridge ... Two days ago a returned from an orvelanding trip round Greece . I have a Mitsubishi Challenger PA2 with a gvm of 2510 kilos . I run 35'' , uprated suspension , front winch , front winch mount on the OEM bumper , custom rock sliders , roof rack , roof tent , custom rear spare wheel carrier with an added 20lt water tank and my basic overlandig gear ( ice fridge , 5kilo gas cooker , table , chairs etc ) I was horrified when the weight bridge printed 2987 kilos including myseld and my girl friend ... WOW .. almost 500 kilos above my GVM . And all my stuff are essential . I mean that I did not carry something that could have stayed home . Yes my 200+ kilos rear springs and my Old man EMU torsion bars will raise my gvm ( not certified for my rig but I know it will improve my GVM ) ... but still ... 500+ plus over my GVM

Hey Ronny, I agree 100% in view of filters and I have added a secondary to my 76 as advised by the Toyota service dept manager. I have not run a catch can on my past vehicles without issue, saying not having one will eventually damage the motor is not specifically correct. In fact there has been no side by side comparison of with or without a catch can on motors under the same conditions done to prove what is still a theory. Additionally, the catch can you use does not have a pressure relief valve. Hence, any seal issues with the motor will void warranty - I was advised this by the Toyota dealer including being shown a service depart memo sent to all Australia service departments in view of the same. Each too their own, but recommending to fit one is maybe not the best advise. Regardless, love your channel and keep up the great content. Just a personal opinion based on my own experience over the yrs.

After 6 months wait I collected my spanking new Dual Cab SR 5 Hilux 7 days ago.... I've watched 1000 hours of Ronny and others. I'm just back from Toyota dealers Mechanic where we spent 30 minutes under the hood. The backup / aftermarket Fuel filter idea is a good one, however the catch can idea was flagged as a big DONT DO ! The mechanic explained why not to install a catch can in mechanic speak which sounded very on the money. I'm still researching but YES to after market Fuel Filter and NO to catch can is where I'm at right now. Love your videos Ronny...

Just a word of caution regarding adding extra fuel filtration. It is a GREAT idea and I have added two extra filters on my Silverado, in the form of a FASS system. The word of caution applies to the restriction that added filtration can cause. If the vehicle doesn't have a lift pump (in other words it relies solely on the injector pump creating a vacuum in order to suck the fuel from the tank), then the additional filtration can potentially create additional load on the EXPENSIVE injector pump. The FASS system I have fitted incorporates a 150 gallon per hour pump down near the tank...it draws the fuel from the tank and forces it through all 3 filters at around 10psi, so the injector pump doesn't have to suck. Just a thought.... Also, could I give a plug to the Mann and Hummell Provent 200 oil fumes separator (ie: catch can). It is a far better option than that stainless steel jobbie. Do some research and you'll soon see why I say that.

Does the extra diesel/water tanks have interior walls (baffles?) to prevent the liquids from moving around while driving?
@cambodianrefugee6305
@cambodianrefugee6305 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent setup! That said, and BTW I have no idea what I'm talking about, from a weight distribution standpoint, I wonder if the fuel/water tank could be split front to back as opposed to side to side. This would require internal, baffles as well. As is, you could potentially have 50kg in one side and 0 in the other. If it matters, you would have to shift other gear around to compensate. Split front to back you will never have a left/right imbalance. Water. Agreed about the taste of water coming out of stainless as opposed to plastic. If you were to plumb in an alternate pickup up point and valve, you could use an auxiliary jerry or bucket to feed the pump for washing up and save the water in the stainless tank for drinking/cooking. You'd have to take care to load only potable water in the jerry to avoid any cross contamination. Otherwise, a completely separate pump and lines would be needed to use untreated backcountry water out of a jerry for washing.

I chose not to pay for it because I wanted to do some research but have struggled to find credible information about them. I found a company that is using a picture of your 79 on their website so was wondering if this means you use a proper permanent rust prevention system and if so what type? I tried to find if you had already done a video on this but couldn't find one and your no BS opinion on commercial rust prevention products would be greatly appreciated. Cheers mate.

Great episode. Just to be pedantic, if you remove anything that’s not bolted down and weigh the car it will give you the TARE weight, not the GVM. Then subtracting the TARE from your GVM will give you payload or carrying capacity.

I would consider wheel arch tanks 75-150 liter per side center the water tank @ 50-150 liter noting water is heavier than diesel... Personally Ronny if people do not have external fuel tanks and extended fuel tanks I would advise state a clause in the tag along legalities in your legal service definition if you don't have the fuel capacity to return to the closest fuel stop to target area 150-300km round trip we can not take you as it is a irresponsible exercise to support you in a reserve fuel capacity to get a limp back into a fuel station to obtain more Because realistically ronny you are building a tanker trailer to tow behind a vehicle either 150-300 liters x10-x30 depending how many vehicles you have in that convoy and the average sizes of the main and 2 reserve fuel tanks .. Don't care the distance you want to travel at, with the average fuel stop being 300-600k's between fuel stops you want to make sure the customer can refuel somewhere... and have enough fuel in the tanks (plural) to get to the next fuel station.. Water is a good thing to have however loose you all the fuel you have you are going to be dead anyway no fuel no power .. whether you run a Hilux, 70 series, 80 series, 100 series, 200 series or the latest 300 series cruiser, or other toyota models, this would be a common setup I would use .. if you are planning to store stuff on your roof space I would still consider a complete exo skeleton frame bolted and welded in 1 piece because what you have as a bullbar will not save you from a strike from: Cattle Emu Camels Roos and other large animals.. I do not believe in water channel secured racks sue to off road weight limits..

8:20 yes, the only two things I've done for engine protection is install a Provent catch can and a Fuel Manager pre-filter kit. The DPF came on three times in in the first 9,000km before fitting a catch can. The DPF has not needed to do a regen since, now at 27,000km. I only empty the catch can at oil changes, every 5,000km, or thereabouts. I have a Fuel Manager pre-filter kit with bowl and water sensor installed. My ute has a factory water sensor in the fuel filter housing, but by the time this comes on, it could be a bit too late, if it's a lot of water. The pre-filter allows me to monitor visually what's dropping out of the fuel by looking through the bowl at oil services or whenever I want to, plus it gives me a warning light on the dash via the probe in the bowl (not a float). It should provide advanced warning of water in the fuel. If both the Fuel Manager and factory warning lights come on in quick succession, that means I've picked up a fair bit of water, and I need to sort it out straight away.

Thinking the fuel/water tanks would be better if they ran side to side instead of fuel on one side and water on other. That way if you dump all fuel but still have water then the weight distribution wouldn’t change.

No a good idea to suggest the wading depth is half way up the window. The real limit is based on where the ECU is positioned in the engine bay. This is usually a high point in the bay but the ECU is not IP69.

I am not sure of the use of a 5 micron pre filter when the factory filter is 5 micron pulling water and diesel through such a small aperture would cause it mix rather than separate a 30 micron filter would separate water better and be less likely to cause a restriction in fuel flow while removing larger contamination leaving the factory filter to do the final clean

fitting a sender in your water/fuel tank is more annoying wiring an gauges to fit(and weight), why not have your fab guy put a recess in the tank and just run a sight glass (clear food grade hose) you're already running a low fitting anyway for gravity feed, a recess protects the fittings from getting hit and you can make double use of the low mount fitting you just need one at the top of the tank.
