Ronny, Ronny, Ronny.... I was an auto electrician half a life time ago, this topic is right up my alley! Really mate, you have got all this amp hour business mixed up. When you talk about amp hours, you mean how many amps are going into your battery bank on average per hour. Once your vehicle battery is fully charged, the regulator in the alternator will reduce amperage to the battery. Not that you need an alternator upgrade that 85amps wasn’t enough. For instance, I have two 100 ah lithium Fusion batteries that I’ve wired to be plug and play similar to yours. I went with Enerdrive, 40 amp dc2dc charger etc. If done correctly, like mylux, I have the original charging system and battery to ONLY start my vehicle, with a stand alone system briefly mentioned above on the similar theme as yours. The Fusions can only have a maximum of 50 amps of charge at one time, no higher, or the bms (battery management system) will shut off all incoming charge. So therefore, say if your dc2dc was 40a, you could have even had a 45amp alternator and it will still charge at the same rate, no higher - even with your 150amp or what ever alternator. The key is to pull all loads from the lithium system and have no loads from the vehicles battery, except your spot lights and winch. You have muddled up the old school dual battery systems with the modern stand alone dc2dc charging system. Hope that makes sense, it’s late. If it didn’t, I believe it was pointless to get an alternator upgrade. But anyway mate, I enjoy your videos, they’re quite informative, thanks 👍

100% agree, the charge/discharge rate the battery can achieve is the fundamental difference between what you can & can’t do with regard to charging not bigger alternator. That’s why DCS Lithiums are in a league above all others on the market. DCS can charge/discharge at 150amps or more & are 100% designed to do so & are the better quality cylindrical cell which is superior to the prismatic cell design which majority of lithiums utilise because it is cheaper

Not sure this is right. From memory the lights can pull a lot of power, and in his other vehicle his alternator was not producing enough amps to charge the battery and power all the lights etc... I think he also mentioned running the winch at night with all the lights on too. I believe he had more than 80amps of load, hence the upgrade. I might be wrong, but that is my take on it.

Another con of that system is the inverter's location. Victron makes good products, but I don't see the poor thing lasting too long as it's already copped a lot of dust and no doubt sucked it inside with its cooling fan. Having sensitive 240V electronics like that mounted in the back of a ute or sitting in the open is a bad idea; all it takes is getting left outside during a night on the piss, then a shower overnight and you've got a waterlogged inverter that can potentially electrocute you or your family. Also, nearly $6000 (more for the average Joe who actually pays for labor) is not affordable for most people. It annoys me when Ronny keeps saying that this is an "affordable" project. Serious offroad enthusiasts buy Landcruisers or Patrols. The average family with kids won't (and can't) spend $6000+ on just the electrics for their dual cab ute. So that begs the question - who is the project for? It's just Ronny using his influence and cash to build something he thinks is cool, and even then this build is so full of compromises that I reckon he is having second thoughts about it.

Seems odd not to upgrade it to something that’s more built for purpose. Maybe you’ve been there done that with PCOR etc on the 79. Can you just list RRP at time of video creation for products and lose the ‘ish’? Maybe even what Ronny paid and what the average person can expect to pay including labour? Also if you’re doing R&D for a product or you’ve got it for discount or free can you explicitly state so in the beginning of your videos? Lithium is definitely the way to go if you are using your rig all the time. Big cost upfront but big advantages as well.

hard to tell from the photo's but i hope that main switch/circuit breaker is a DC specific circuit breaker and not an AC circuit breaker. If it's AC it's not designed for the ARC'ing from DC current, it will wear down prematurely, and worst case i've seen on a mine site truck, it does not break, and sets on fire. Have literally seen the solder melt out from a circuit breaker used on DC

Hi Ronny, What do you think about something like "Jackery explorer 1000"? It has 1002Wh. Has DC input and Anderson input with multiple outputs. Jackery can seems to be charged by the regular 12v outlet (without wiring to the starter battery). Plus has optional solar panel. Would it be a good choice? TIA.

Nice video Ronny. Wonder whether anyone owns the patent for the battery box. This looks like what I got from National Luna except that the National Luna has a Green Box that has 25A DC-DC charger and solar charging built in. It is a recent upgrade to their line of portable battery boxes. They also have another version exactly like what you have in your video. I was surprised to see it referred to as Kraftworks battery box. I have a set up almost like what you have so your video reminds me of what I have done with my Lux. Keep the mods and videos coming.....

Klarmann keeps modifying equipment and sticking his name on it. This is a modified Luna box. He’s down similar with 4xOverland and stuck a Kraftwerk badge straight on a redvision box. I’m not sure how long company’s will put up with this.

I just have a dual battery set up under the bonnet in my Ute with and Anderson plug and 12v ciggie plug at the tray. Anderson plug for a fridge and ciggie plug for any other recharging. I thought this was simple until I watched a Tim Bates video the other day and he just uses a red arc solenoid that charges second battery. The most simple idea I have seen and lasted him years without any trouble. I watch all these new ideas that cost thousands of dollars and wonder if they are any better?

@Rony with the Mods you’ve done on the Hilux.. to what extent does the Vehicle Manufacture Warranty apply or once you go the Mods route that is invalid right away..? Keep up the good work..
@gibsonethirty28363 жыл бұрын
With what hes done, no longer under warranty for the electrics that's for damned sure, nor does the vehicle any longer have an AMPCAP rating (that goes as soon as you bolt on anything to any vehicle - like a bullbar) which is why getting insurance for a true offroad overlander can be difficult.
@arthurweier80443 жыл бұрын
Hi Ronny, always good to watch your vids and some ideas for my own hilux. But I would be curios of your thoughts regarding the limited space inside the cab to add any additional switches with only 4 empty spaces available. I resolved this issue by locating the UHF head unit in behind the glove box and installing an overhead console with provided plenty of space for some additional switches and power outlets.

I don understand why you have a fuel tank with pump? A jerry can would do exactly the same just cheaper and a lot lighter if you get plastic ones. Also a jerry can won't fail. The pump can definitely fail. Just wondering because you seem really concerned about weight. Other that that I think you going the right direction with this build

The faster charge rate alone is a big advantage. Say your battery is getting low while camping and you don't have a full day of sun, just a small amount would get your charge up compared to needing at least half a day of sun for an AGM.
@jakewarren94653 жыл бұрын
Limited by the dcdc charger in this case. An AGM battery will charge just as fast if the current limited by a charger.

You should really differentiate between LiFePo4 (what you have installed) and Lion batteries. Calling the batteries Lithium is not wrong, but may lead some people into installing batteries with other Lithium chemistries. LiFePo4 will charge off a standard automotive charging system without going up in flames. Lion batteries are not safe enough for automotive use (unless you like fires) and require special handling in terms of charging. I switched my car and bike over to LiFePo4 batteries in ~2010 and still have the same batteries in both. PS my 2013 Tacoma came with a 130 A alternator, why would they give the Hilux such a lame alternator?

Yeah, it’s a disservice to the viewers to just gloss over things like this and also to say there’s no cons to “lithium batteries”.
