I get what you're saying about these fancy boxes. I want to point out that using the standard mailer is perfectly fine as long as you take steps to protect the innards of the mailer. Ie- I use standard mailers that are expandable. I then purchase white foam board from the $ store cut these using a record jacket template, and they end up just slightly bigger then the record. I then pack my cleaned record in a new sleeve outside the jacket, using x2 outer sleeved and position them facing two different directions so that the record cannot slip around. I use x2 of my foam stiffeners and insert it between the sleeves so that is presses the record slightly and does not allow it to move. I then tape the second stiffener on the other side the the record and seal them evenly together (like a sandwich where the record is the jam). This will leave a small gap between the mailer and the record and reinforce the mailer. I have been doing this for years now, and get rave revues about how I pack my items. I'm not saying this of for everyone, but I am showing you a way to use the less expensive mailers and deliver product that is undamaged. BTW, to avoid split on SEALED records, follow the outer sleeve trick but tape the record in the sleeve on all 4 points where the vinyl would split through. This reinforces the sleeve, and then adding your foam boards to either side lessens the movement of the record in the sleeve. I plan to make a video of this process in the future.. if I ever find the time.

Excellent video. Over the years i`ve received so many records damaged during shipping due to the seller not packing the record properly. It`s really frustrating. Personally i prefer to leave the vinyl in the sleeve during shipping. I always wrap the record twice in thick bubble wrap and then make a box from sheet card to fit exactly so as the record can`t move about in the box. I also build up a few layers of tape on each corner of the box to protect the corners from damage. I`ve done many international and domestic orders using this method and never had one order damaged

thank you very much for your comment this is key (you just have to care) and understand how records get damaged in the mail then use an appropriate method suitable or fitting for your particular purpose to prevent any shipping damage GRATZ!! you may want to cut your sheet card 13x13 then tape the record to one side of the sheet this will provide extra protection, I have used this method in the past and have recommended it to other folks who only need to ship 1 or 2 records and don't want to purchase a case of boxes. thanks for watching and sharing you valuable comments.

Poor record packaging and having to deal with sellere is the reason why I decided to stop collecting records. I was doing it for almost 10 years. I'd say in more than 90% of the time, the records I bought online were packaged in a quick careless manner. A damaged record sleeve cannot be fixed or replaced. If you buy a CD and the case is cracked, you can always get a replacement case. That's the difference between buying records and CDs. A lot of sellers don't get this.

Glad to see someone showing how to properly package LP's. I have bought nearly 40 LP's through the mail. Most shipped in the inexpensive white box you showed and thankfully none have been damaged so far. One seller actually shipped me a record in a pizza box the record was secure and the box was grease free. Great vid!

"Prteach" it Brother Beaudry! I purchase around 500 albums a year from sellers on eBay and Discogs. I expect the occasional poor packaging from an eBay seller that doesn't normally sell record albums and that is why I go into my "how-to-package-record-albums-for-shipping" rant to those sellers. But Discogs is a site that primarily sells only rare vinyl and I am appalled at how many "sellers" just throw the album (vinyl enclosed within album cover) into a flimsy mailer and ship it off. I recently (today) received a 1st edition copy of Big Star #1 Record packaged that way. Luckily everything turned out fine on this one. In the course of a year I will have to return or have my money reimbursed on 40 to 50 albums a year due to split seams and poor packaging issues. Your video is very informative - album sellers on eBay and Discogs should have to watch this.

Ron, thanks for showing the different types of LP shipping boxes you have in this 2nd video 'How to package and ship LP records safely' My worry with shipping is having the record cover corners protected so they aren't creased in transit. I once made cardboard corners from a design I found on google but it was to time consuming making these.

I used to manage a bookstore and had custom boxes made as needed at a local box company, something in the range of 10-25 cents a box depending on size. I use a double boxing method when I can, A regular LP mailer from something incoming then a larger amazon style box around that. There is an example in a recent Vinyl Ritchie video, works well for me, if you have time to fold and tape that much.

The generic white LP mailers are cut smaller than the jacket. 99% time the jacket corners are going to bend. a local cardboard place in my city cuts them at 13x13 inner dimensions (plenty of room for Tri/Gatefolds, bubble wrap & stiffeners w/ outside 1/4" bumpers (13.5x13.5x1.375 outside dimensions) i make my own stiffeners out of the boxes when i checkout at Costco lol

Good video Ron. I'll be ordering he latest boxes. I've been without vinyl music for 10 years. SO, lately I'm inventorying records and selling a few so far on ebay and Discogs. While I am just starting out, I want to minimize my selling expenses. This was very helpful. Also the packaging tips. I'd hate to lose a sale as a result of poor packaging. My collection is at about 2,00 records, most of which are NM condition. The rest are VG+ or better. Sure love the vinyl. I appreciate any other pointers or links you may have. All the best, Happy New Year!

I hated the original mainstream LP shipping box used by 98% of sellers (only because most don't know how to use them... some are starting to use Pizza boxes again..UG. These are good examples sir ! I invented a method of using boxes from Walmart - get 4 mailers out of their big $2.00 box - have to do some manual cutting but never had a LP damaged in 20 years in shipping. I used to use these particular boxes from Starbucks they used to throw away , but now they cut off the box flaps. Starbucks small boxes fit 45's perfectly.

Good info, thanks for the video. Had never thought about split seams with the record left in the cover. About to start listing much of my LP collection on ebay due to long term unemployment. Did record shows eons ago (1980s) as a seller. Have never had any problems with the venerable TLP3 box as a buyer as you have had, but most had stiffeners and or small bubble wrap. You started the video with Captain Beyonds first album (obviously not first pressing with 3d glue on) but that is still one of my favorite 1970's power rock albums of all time!

Hi Ron, I really enjoyed your well-thought-out video. I also watched your video on grading records. After receiving so many misgraded records in the mail (esp on ebay), I started to wonder if I was being overly OCD or picky with my grading. But your video made me feel better that my assessments are on the same page as yours and I feel we are being totally reasonable! I totally agree with the way you ship the records. If I had anything to add on, I would say that it's important to add the padding, but you don't want to make it too tight. I've had some records come to me with ringwear because the packaging was too tight and the record edges indented on the album cover.

Ben Li Hi Ben thanks for your feedback, you usually get the record imprinting into the cover when records are stored improperly one on top of another in a big stack for a long time, not by being wrapped snugly for shipment. Remember you don't want the record moving around in the box. thanks for taking the time to let me know you are enjoying the videos I appreciate that. best regards Ron

Hi - great video. On your recommendations; #1 Amazon box - not a great experience on overseas shipping, particularly to/from UK, Italy, or Spain. Germany is typically no problem. The box is just not sturdy enough and most problems arise from creases on the cover than corner damage or seam splits. #2 Music Direct - looks great. I've had a few mailings with this type of box and re-used it myself. This is what Acoustic Sounds also uses for mailing. Works great, wish it was available. #3 Whiplash - Works great. I wish they sold in smaller quantities, 125 is a lot. Maybe you can buy the thousand and resell to your youtube fans (?!). I have also used SleeveCIty's ultimate mailer. Works great. If you catch a 15% discount code you can save some money but then with the stiffeners you'll end up paying $1.00- 1.50 per mailing which is not that far behind the cost of a whiplash box

I've been buying records online for years! It was only recently that I had a seller use a whiplash! I thanked him profusely!!! I'm sick and tired of sellers using cheap crappy thin mailers. I always tell them if I buy a record brand new or pay a lot for it, I better get it intact. A seam split = immediate dispute with my credit card issuer. Btw, Juno UK uses the worst mailers ever. I've repeatedly complained to them about it. They are a big online record store.

Hey Ron, I'm starting a new record label, and we just ran an indiegogo campaign to get started with pressing our first run of 7" singles. While running the campaign, one of the things that I'm trying to get my head around the best way to ship records to all of our supporters who contributed to the campaign (as well as our customers going forward). Your videos have been VERY informative. My question is, for the whiplash cases, do they come in a 7" variety? Also, is there anything different that you'd do to ship a 7" records differently than a standard 12" lp? Very curious. Thanks, Chris

hey rockin ronnie, i like your video. i sell sealed records and i'm about to start venturing into opened records. i know how to play grade and most of my stuff is kept super minty any way but i am still a noob and i'm still confused as to why its safer to ship the LP out side the cover. also i use the white LP mailers always with 2 cardboard stiffeners per mailer and so i never fit more than 2 gatefolds or 3 flat cover LPs per mailer and when i send them they never shake. silent. i have had one incident in about 200 which was clearly postal mishandling where no amount of cardboard or foam would have stopped that crease. having said that i am thinking of upgrading to the whiplash mailers they seem worth it. i am on a mission to serve fantastic musical relics to super happy customers so price doesnt matter, its function and convenience. thank you for information and keep rockin

Thank you for this very good video on shipping LP's. I will be shipping a record album with 2 record set. I have a box that is 15 1/2" x 12 3/4" x 3 1/4 deep. How should I place the 2nd record in the wrapping/sleeve process? I have never done this before so instead of a plastic sleeve I hope that I can use Saran Cling Plus that gives extra tight hold. I can cut out stiffeners from used boxes. Look forward to your reply. Toni

Just make sure your records are in good inner sleeves and since you have an extra deep box put a stiffener in between the two LPS then you can wrap it with the cling-wrap but don't make it too tight because you can warp the record if it gets too hot

I just looked at the Whiplash Mailers and they look great. It does mention that no other shipping materials are required. Would you still recommend taking the vinyl record out of the jacket with the sleeve, and sandwiching it in between corrugated cardboard? Or is this truly unneccesary with these Whiplash mailers? Can you then keep the record(s) sealed/upopened?

Mitchell Galinkin I think the most important part is removing the record because it prevents seam splits like Ron says but also makes the cover lighter so it doesnt slam into corners and such. A strong box is the second most important to prevent bends, creases and mushed corners. Other than that bubble wrap and such isnt really needed as long as its all in a plastic outer sleeve. Although I still use it just for that extra sense of security.

Thanks for the great video, Ron! Thinking about splits, I wonder how much of a problem they would be if sellers simply replaced the old, worn record sleeves with new ones prior to shipping. The LP edge isn't likely to cut through a new sleeve, is it? And a new sleeve isn't likely to split the seam, is it? Also, with tight packing along the thin dimension, the LP isn't likely to slide much, further limiting the chance of splitting, right? Any thoughts?

some people always wanted new and sealed record sealed records are worth more money to collectors but they presente a challenge to shippers you can always take Saran Wrap and wrap the record up really good on the ends and maybe put some extra masking tape around the ends to help ensure the record doesn't come through there cover

Hi, Ron, I discovered your channel through your previous record packaging video on the Ebay support page (when I first started selling records) and since then your channel has been my favourite on youtube when it comes to vinyl related videos. I have received tremendous feedback since then so thank you! I managed to buy 100 pizza boxes for around £20 but the only problem with that is that they count as a medium parcel and Royal Mail (I'm from the UK) recently raised the prices on posting medium parcels shortly after I purchased them. It probably costs me around £7 in postage + packing to send a record in the UK but I just charge a bit less otherwise people will be put off on buying my cheaper records. I'm curious as to why you don't separate your inner sleeve/record from the main record sleeve and place both separately into a poly outer when it comes to the records that you don't plan on selling (like how you explained sending records in this and the other video)? It gives you easier access and prevents ring wear/seam splits and it's also handy for when you get those card inner sleeves that you want to keep but not use. I'm sure you already know that so I'm just curious. Thank you!

thank you very much for watching I am very happy to hear you enjoy my videos!! Postage? mail rates went up here a while back as well and it cost me a little more to send than I receive now, why I don't separate my inner sleeve/record from the main record sleeve? its just a habit no reason I have been doing it for almost 50 years so for me the record belongs in the cover. I don't mind placing them in taking them out. just like, I like getting up after the side is over and flipping the record over its part of what I am comfortable with.

Thanks. Having a hard time finding 10" boxes with the same level of faulty as this 12" box. Was wondering if it would be okay to use the 12" box and just add extra protection/cushioning to keep the record from sliding.

Thanks for sharing the info. Ia m also from Canada, so this type of box is not an option for me. I need to find a way to get the weight down for 1 LP below 500 grams. With the 13 x 13 x 2 box weight is above that and my shipping costs are too hi. Anyone have and idea?

Most important thing about records besides content is condition In order to get a good money for records the records must be in near mint condition that means that the person who own them rarely played them for most people that's not true. I also have a video that says how I grade records it's pretty strict but it should give you some ideas. just go on EBay or discogs and look at the record you wanna sell try to figure out your condition and what they're selling for on that site. Selling records online have many pitfalls And it's a lot of work The records that are worth money are the very rare records that most people don't have that's why they're rare And it's only the Crazy collectors that even have some of that stuff And are willing to pay the price to get it but they're super fussy on condition as well.

The video is great lots of info one important part is that price for a record today they start on $1 to $1000 and everything in between most of them are between $ 1 and $10 and with those prices shipping is not going to be real good on ebay and ebay is the flea market online so you can't spect to much out of that only if the customer is willing to pay an extra $2 wich I find out that collectors are the cheapest bastards in the trade they want quality on everything but there are not willing to pay extra for something their love is like I love my dog but I feed him crappy food because is cheap the recycle industry is destroying vinyl records real fast in a few years lots of them will be worth a fortune last year 2017 more then 10 million records got BURN not recycle BURN with garvich then is the recycle co manufacturing bracelets and craft

Other than some grammar, you couldn't have said that any better. If you expect a 10 LP to be sent to your home in the upmost quality condition. Collectors need to pay the shipping cost.

The cost of the boxes at $1.00 or more probably works if you are selling high ticket items. But what about the records that cost below $10.00? Priority mail seems more practical if packaged properly, Nice presentation though.

where can I get cardboard boxes for records with 4 SIDES BUMPERS??? not just 2 sides! (not make sense just protect 2 sides, we need 4 sides)
@RocknRonni
@RocknRonni 8 жыл бұрын
the way it works is you are protecting all 4 corners because the 4 corners are not touching the outside of the box. because of the 2 bumpers
@sebastianspatafore5117
@sebastianspatafore5117 8 жыл бұрын
yes but if someone MASH/BEAT the bottom center of the box will mash the bottom center of the record artwork, same for center top (I know that not happens a lot but some mail workers mash the packages), so if all 4 sides had bumpers will be great, but I got your point, your packing is better than many sellers use.
@RocknRonni
@RocknRonni 8 жыл бұрын
+Sebastian Spatafore I agree if you had four bumpers it would be better but I packed a lot of records with these boxes have had zero problems all the records get there undamaged. the damage always occurs on the corners or seam splits from poor Packaging I think part of the fault is the automated assembly lines the packages go down that's why they always get the dings on the corners
@chanel9-n2p
@chanel9-n2p 7 жыл бұрын
That's the thing that has me scratching my head about the Whiplash. The bumpers give great edge protection on 2 sides only. What about the other 2 sides? I can see, though, that those 2 little corner flaps that fold in would keep the edge of the cover maybe 3/16" in from the edge of the mailer which helps. They should modify the design a tad so as to make those tabs longer with a crease in the middle. Then you fold the tab back over itself to thicken that space along the edge. It wouldn't provide as much space as those thick bumpers, but it would be better than what they have now. (Yes, the box would have to be a bit longer in one direction to provide for that.) I read Ron's comments, though. If he said he has had zero problems, I guess you can't get any better than that. Ultimately, that's what you're going for.

when are you going to post your video of you comparing different reissues of the beatles on vinyl, your opinion of vinyl sound quality has great credibility, what I have heard of the 2014 mono vinyl the sound quality is phenomenal, sounds like you're at the studio while they are recording the albums, if anything the sound quality is too much - you can hear the mistakes, you can hear their voices straining sometimes, you can even hear them cough on a song, about 30 seconds into norwegian wood you can hear someone cough, the 2014 mono vinyl is such an exact replica of the beatles recording in the studio that the beatles sound human, the music isn't as symphonic, I keep checking your channel here to hear your review of the 2014 mono vinyl compared to Japanese pressings and mfsl, the blue box and red box, was a big disappointment the latest stereo box set was pressed from a copy of the original master instead of directly from the master tape
