After seeing Ronda on a TV program, I knew that that was a place I had to visit. I flew into Malaga and drove to Gibraltar, Tarifa, Jerez, Arcos de la Frontera, Zahara de la Sierra and Ronda. Ronda is an incredibly beautiful town, full of history and scenic locations. Two of these are Alameda del Tajo, a nicely shaded park with gentle breezes and spectacular views, and perhaps my favorite place in Ronda (perhaps even of my trip) Plaza de Maria Auxiladore, a small park in the old town on the edge of the cliff where a street musician was playing his guitar accompanied by the sounds of a fountain in the background. Perhaps because of its location (off the beaten track) or perhaps because of the time of year (early October), the park had only a few tourists and the effect was extremely peaceful. From Ronda I returned the car to Malaga airport and took a bus to Granada to see the Alhambra. Words fail me when I try to describe the Alhambra. Suffice it to say that I was stunned. To quote the hostess of the TV program "Secret Spain", the Alhambra is a place "you have to see before you die". But if I can offer one word of advice to someone contemplating a trip to Spain it is that the secret to a most enjoyable trip is research. Know where you want to visit, know which restaurants at which you want to eat, use Google Street View to familiarize yourself with directions and locations and when you think you've done enough research, do some more. But most of all: don't think twice about visiting Andalucia. Just go!

Beautiful words, love how you have taken us back to the moment just by using words, I remember passing through Plaza de Maria Auxiladore on the way to Tajo de Ronda. I think, we would have to stay the night and capture the beauty of this place at night and the sunrise. We are actually planning a video “Ultimate Ronda” next month where we explore the surroundings to create a perfect weekend itinerary. Any suggestions, please feel free to share. What were your top 3 places in Andalucia? Great tips, we will be using some to pass on to viewers. Than you for the lovely comment.

@@thepakspan Firstly, Your Ronda video brought back so many fond memories and showed so many familiar scenes that I was so eager to share with you my experiences there and I forgot to thank you for posting this visual summary of your trip and for that I apologize. Generally speaking, the tourist will obviously have to decide where to stay. Personally, I decided to book hotels near the places I wanted to visit. This usually meant that I had to pay a premium but it also meant that I did not have to worry about extra transportation and the added time that unnecessary travel would eat up. But this is something that each person will have to decide for themself. You asked me what were my three favorite places in Andalucia. I named two of these in my original comment: the Alhambra in Granada, the Plaza de Maria Auxiladore in Ronda and my third selection would have to be the approach to Zahara de la Sierra from Arcos de la Frontera along Highways A372 and CA9104. The scenery through the mountains is incredible and becomes stunning as you crest the mountains and look down on a plain dotted with large hills and azure blue lakes. But there are so many sights and places of interest to see in Andalucia that I feel I would be selling them short if I did not at least give them a mention. In Ronda there is the bull ring which is apparently the oldest one in Spain. Bull fighting was first designed to be training for soldiers. Not far from the Plaza de Maria Auxiliadora is the Palacio de Mondragon. Now a museum, it once served as the residence of Ferdinand and Isabella. Nearby is the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, the location of Ronda's City Hall and the Church of Santa Maria la Mayor. There has been a church on this site since 45 BC when Julius Caesar built a temple to the goddess Dianna to give thanks for his victory at the Battle of Mundor (Ronda). The present church was built in 1580 after a fire destroyed the one built by Ferdinand and Isabella. (The ciborium, the covering over the alter, was carved from wood from Canada). It is worth a quick side trip to follow the gorge eastward a short distance to see the Arco de Felipe V, at one time the main entrance to Ronda, the nearby Roman baths where visitors to Ronda could bathe before entering the city and the two other bridges which span the river. Fine dining is available at El Morabito in the Plaza de Maria Auxiladora where you are seated at the edge of the cliff. More casual dining is available at Tragata just off Plaza Espana or The Bodega (San Francisco) Tapas at the south end of the city near the Puerta de Almocabar in the old city walls. While Tarifa is a beautiful town in its own right, I visited there for one main reason. Standing by the gates to the fort at the end of the causeway with the Mediterranean on my right and the Atlantic on my left, I was the most southerly person in mainland Europe. If you visit Arcos de la Frontera by automobile and are staying in a hotel in the old part of the city, I strongly recommend that you leave the car in the underground parking just off the Plaza Espana on C. Munoz Vazquez and take a taxi. Parking in the Old Town is extremely hard to find, the streets are very narrow and one way and if you miss your turn you have to exit the town and circle around for another attempt. Don't forget to visit the Basilica De Santa Maria, a church built on Moorish ruins to celebrate the Reconquista. Outside the door of the Basilica is a mosaic circle on the ground which was supposed to afford protection from evil spirits when performing exorcism on a child before Baptism. The space outside the Basilica, now used as a parking lot (and always full) was once used as a bull ring. Nearby is Plaza Boticas where two bodegas offer casual meals. You'll be amazed when you see this plaza and learn that it is open to automobile traffic so keep your toes under the table. Another fine place to eat is the Alcaravan, just a short stroll away from the Basilica. The building in which it is located used to be a jail. Rather than keep the rental car I used to visit the white hill towns, I returned to the rental company at Malaga airport and for only $20 I took a bus to Granada. If you decide to visit the Alhambra, AS SOON AS YOU DO SO GET YOUR TICKETS ON LINE. A few days or even a few weeks in advance may not be enough time to secure the dates you want. And be aware that your tickets are good only for a certain time on the date specified. If you arrive late, you might be refused entrance. Secondly, enter the Alhambra by the Puerta de la Justicia. This entrance is only about 100 yards from where you enter the palaces and saves you a 15-20 minute walk if the main entrance is used. After touring the palaces, the Generalife can be visited and the grounds then exited by the nearby main entrance. Give the Alhambra at least a half a day. For tapas, a must when in Granada, visit the famous Calle Navas where can be found a nice variety of foods. OMG!!! I only intended to add a few extra comments to answer your questions. But it seems that rather than doing that, I have started to write a novel. So I'm ending it here before the reader gives up on me entirely. The best piece of advice I can give is this: just go! Find all this and more out for yourself.

Was it difficult to find parking?
@thepakspan9 ай бұрын
Not at all, if you put in navigation “Parking plaza del socorro” it’ll take you to underground parking in the centre(close to the bridge). - Download app(apk2) to avoid €18 per day charges and if rental car… delete details from the app before returning as it automatically opens on number plate recognition. The real issue is tight spaces/curves in Spanish carparks 😅

So this was a Muslim town? What happened to their places of worship?
@thepakspan7 ай бұрын
Like most of southern Spain Ronda was ruled by muslims for 100s of years. A lot of places of worships were converted into churches and cathedrals.
