So walk along with Ronda, Trav, and Steve as they meet the chickens, goats, donkey and the newest addition to the farm - Porter the bull. Steve-O is famously a self-described "bleeding heart veggie guy," but Ronda and Trav share a lot in common with Mr. O.

Great to see & hear a family's honesty toward the food they eat in particular the animals they raise for meat. We raised our family on a small farm (called a lifestyle block here in New Zealand). Our children grew up knowing to eat meat an animal had to die, from the day they were born they were exposed to animals being raised (or hunted) and slaughtered for us to live. Our kids have all raised lambs, calves, deer, chickens etc and entered them into school competitions with the full knowledge that in time the animals they raised would be killed butchered and eaten. This understanding of what it takes to get food on the table I honestly believe gave our kids a deeper understanding of the cycles of life, they all developed an abiding love & respect for the lives and wellbeing of animals. Which instilled in them respect, empathy and care for others. That while the animals they raise will become food but as Rhonda & Travis said the animals are well feed & cared for but even more important they die well without the stress of being trucked to be slaughtered and having the smell & sound of death overloading their senses before they are finaly slaughtered. I truly believe one of the reasons there is so much violence & cruelty in our society (whether it is the US or NZ) not just between people but also towards animals is because modern society has removed the reality of where our meat and animal derived products come, from our societies are now so far removed from the means of food production that for some consumers the only exposure they receive is what they see in the media or internet which is usually negative (factory farming practices or supplements promote rapid growth antibiotics to prevent disease) which results in them ignoring the issue, not caring because it's only animals or worse thinking that is normal. I really despair when I hear of children who think that magically meat comes from a supermarket in a nice clean & tidy plastic tray or milk from a carton they are not taught where or what it takes for them to eat! What is even worse and the height of hipocrocy are the parents who dont want their children to know where their food comes from and what it takes to put that food on the table. I totally agree everyone who eats meat needs a reality check they either need to participate in the killing & butchering or an animal or failing that watch the process, they need to hear, smell and feel the process- they need to understand what it takes to put meat on that supermarket shelf. I would argue that the meat we raise at home (100% grass feed maybe a bit of hay or silage from time to time) has a much smaller carbon footprint than that off a vegan or vegetarian diet which includes imported vegetables fruits nuts and supplements. Here in New Zealand we have an agricultural based economy we export meat, wool, dairy products and animal products to the world we are a small nation with a small population (approx 5 million) yet despite the importance of farming our society is no different from others there is a major disconnect between the process of food production and the consumer. Thank you for posting such a refreshing and honest clip, i hope both you and your family continue to enjoy and appreciate the animals that feed you. PS our kids when they named their young animals that were destined for the table we encouraged them to use names that represented food such as lambs being call Chop or piglets called Bacon even a calf called Corn (as in corned beef).

To be honest, I have way more respect for you guys then any vegan/vegetarian because all they do is block it all out all together, you guys are aware of the situation of animals and actually do it the right way and humane way. Being a vegan, for people isn't natural. Some animals are naturally veg eaters others only eat meat. We eat both and we need both. You have no idea what an animal goes through in mass production farms / slaughter houses, Its fucked up. So seeing them raise their own animals take care of them, love them then one day one second, the lights go out and that's it. I think they are doing the best they can.

Hey Ronda and Travis...It's interesting that you two are into preparing for a possible break down in civilization. I wonder if either of you have looked into what Governments around the world do regarding this same concern. Some people believe that individuals like yourselves are being silly etc...while unaware the biggest "preppers" are their own governments for good reasons, contingency plans for in the event our infrastructure completely fails. I am getting into disaster relief, particularly from a marine (water orientated) perspective. I have joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary which involves FEMA quite a bit. I realize this is Government stuff but, there is a lot to learn from these organizations concerning preparedness for natural disasters, civil unrest, or general mayhem. Of course, I do believe you guys are preparing in case these organizations fail which is wise in every fashion but, in the meantime, there is a lot of good info available.
