NASA astronaut Ron Garan flies his last flight for now in a T-38 prior to starting a temporary position with the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Ron will be on loan to USAID to help apply space technology to the challenges facing the developing world.
Flying with Ron in the video are Lee Archambault and Drew Feustel.
Also in the video are: Carmel Garan, Cady Coleman, Eric Boe, Nick Skytland, Krista Skytland, Ali Llewellyn, Brian Kelly, Mike Fossum, Rex Walheim, Chris Gerty, and making their film debut, Asher and Kai Skytland.
As you will see, they all join in a tradition reserved for pilots at the end of their tour of duty.

Loved it! I grew up just north of Ellington AFB and a T38 on approach would stop us all cold. Thanks for all you do for the USA and good luck in all future endeavors.

USAID doesn't even support U.S. flag ships and crews, why not teach Americans since we are the ones that paid for not only AID but NASA and your total flight education, get down to Chicago or somewhere and help those out, as we've done for you. U.S. Taxpayer! .Nice video though of flying without restrictions. Student pilot (paid by me).

I love the T-38. My old man used to see the Apollo astronauts fly theirs into Marshall Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, Ala. back when he was with NASA. Look at that glass cockpit.

Love the video and your new role sound very interesting, but the Fragile Oasis web link gives a 404 error and I can't find it on the website. Can you please check/reupload, I'd love to hear more about your new role!

Thank you so much for this video, Colonel Garan. Having lived in Houston my whole life, sometimes I see the T-38s fly overhead in formation and I always wondered what it was like in the cockpit. Now I know. You and your peers inspired me to join the Air Force, with hopes of eventually joining the Astronaut Corps.

Hello Ron, If you want a really cool video taken of the T-38 flights it would be awesome to fly down and do some filming. Here in MSP we get 1-2 Talons a month. I have recently seen a white talon takeoff but because I was working I was unable to capture it. I really am dying to see more T-38's. I love how loud and fast they are.

Thanks a lot for this very nice flight / GoPro tutorial "How to manage to do flips and rolls while filming with a GoPro ? " :-) GoPro videos inboard jets are not so common... Yours is clearly one of the best from a general, editing and music point of view. (The best, as to me, is this one but i'm maybe not fully objective... : U-tube.... watch?v=gn8YHxnglbM ). Godspeed to you !

ikkeennigij121 It's very loud in the cockpit (STS) so those earplugs are necessary to prevent hearing loss.

Current programs include International Space Station (ISS) and validation of Dream Chaser through commercial partners. If you are not familiar with the future of Nasa, we still need active astronauts since there are many upcoming programs that require them. Some examples are the ORION/SLS program, Near Earth Asteroids, Moon Base/Launch Pad/Refueling Station, and then onto Mars and beyond. If you look at the long term, they will be necessary to begin training the general public/civilian pilots once space becomes a normal transit system at the turn of the century.
