Don Pettit captured video of a recent flight that saw his fellow astronauts Barry "Butch” Wilmore and Stephanie Wilson bank low over Marshall Space Flight Center at Huntsville, Alabama. The fly-by was done in honor of the completion of Test Stand 4697, which will be used to test the new Space Launch System liquid oxygen tank.

This is one of the most beautiful jets I've ever seen. I've loved it ever since I first laid my eyes on her. According to Craig Nelson's "Rocket Men", Buzz Aldrin used to fly a T-38 back and forth from the Cape to Housten during the Apollo era so often he would often forget where he was going. He would have to look at his compass just to make sure. They say these beauties are difficult to fly due to the necessity to keep the airspeed on target for different maneuvers. The Apollo astronauts must have been pretty good damn pilots. It's very sad we lost two of them in a T38 when they were trying to make an IFR approach that was "fogged in". My understanding is that they crashed into a building where a major piece of the Apollo rocket was being tested. Even the best pilots can be caught off guard under the wrong circumstances.

Indeed nasa's pilots are so often aviators so its understandable they are good if the T38 is complex then just imagine the complexity of an F18, F-22 or F-35 they say it like 500 things needed before an F18 will start thats crazy

All of the shuttle astronauts flew in from Houston to KSC in NASA’s T-38s just before a shuttle launch and held a press conference in front of their crafts. It was very inspiring.

Actually, See and Bassett would likely be alive today had they been doing an IFR approach...instead of calling "Missed Approach" when they determined they were not able to make the landing, (as they would have if they were following the published IFR procedure for KSTL), See elected to stay low below the clouds and attempt a visual go-around, in an attempt to stay VFR to landing. It abosolutely was a lapse in flying discipline that cost both crewmembers their lives. Perhaps Deke Slayton was correct in his assessment that See flew "like an old woman". Not trying to be disrespectful to the departed, but See (a supposedly seasoned test pilot) should have known better. There are no second chances in flying.

At least they don’t pull off the stunts like “For All Mankind” shows. And don’t ever pull a Cobra in a T-38.
