Brown paper bag from new forms is still one of my all time favorite’s, seeing him live in HK back in 96 seems like it was just the catalyst that I needed to inspire me at the time to dive into dj’ing … much respect to you Roni for keeping it real the entire way.

So good to hear his stories. I really love Dope Dragon records they are something really special to me. Im bit younger so I collect allmost every Dope Dragon 12' and vinyls around 2010 when I was 23years. Also Im from Finland so collecting those records wasnt easiest task, I still got them :)

This is absolutely wonderful to hear, and Roni is so humble. I'm still personally at awe how incredible stuff they did back then with so little to work with, compared to nowadays when there's so much but nothing sounds as good. 93-97 style is forever the coolest for me. And i'm not even from that era, i was born in 1992. I would LOVE to hear similar interview from Dj Hype!

It's the limitations of the gear that inspired creativity.....when you've got an SP1200 with 10 seconds of sample time, you've gotta think outside the box!

@@Dandroid5000 What stops nowadays artist to limit him(her)self then? You don't even need the overpriced/limited vintage technology - just limit yourself with whatever there is. My point is that you oversimplify the question. Creativity is not just about gear. Thinking "outside the box" starts way before the gear and is not about limitations, unless you're programmed by yourself on limitation. Many artists still use an MPC 60 or 2000XL or some 70s instruments. Is it because of the limitations? Or is it just enough to create art? You have to choose an instrument or a medium thats fits your creative idea, not vice-versa - waiting for an instrument to inspire you. "93-97" is way more complex, than just technology limitations. It's the politics, mindset, attitude, "DIYness" of the music culture. That's lost for now mostly, but nothing is lost forever, hopefully.

@@zerobject I remember that excitement in the 90s Roni Size talks about: growing a beard in the studio, not even eating properly, because you are so focused on and thrilled with the music you are making and being part of the culture of the time, I don't think that exists anymore.

@@kixxalot What's even more interesting to me is that that same Roni (or his colleagues) is no longer growing a beard in the studio not eating properly. So, yes, that doesn't exist in DnB now, but hopefully it's not the only music we have and there is (and will be) always someone growing a beard.

@@zerobject I hope so too, but my point is back in the 90s you felt like you were really doing something special while you were making music. It took a lot of effort (and money) to set up even a minimal studio, there were no tutorials so there was more mystery and DIY, and it was all new and fresh to us. Now you are just another DAW kid splurged with samplepacks, presets and tutorials, and no exciting scene to speak of.

I played a gig with him in new Orleans probably just a little before this and while I was playing, he came up to me and called me a world class DJ. As a DJ, people give me positive comments all the time but when Roni size makes it a point to come up to you and say those words...... One of the greatest nights!
