I have an arming sword from Ronin 's Euro line, and I can confirm that they make quality swords.
@ultrixcrucesignatus12616 жыл бұрын
I've got their double fullered model with the fishtail pommel. The round riser sits lower on that one which, to me, feels very comfortable in a handshake grip. The stitching is noticeable, but nothing that ever bothered me. I get the impression Skall's a tad particular about his grip covers. The thing's built like a tank. Though on mine the pommel's still rock solid, but the guard has loosened up quite a bit. It's also a fairly hefty sword, so it can get pretty tiring in a flow drill. My only complaint is a lack of authenticity. It feels modern. The fit and finish is good, but it feels kinda like IKEA furniture compared to something more historical.
@ConstructmanPsion6 жыл бұрын
I don't have that good an artist's eye, so could you point out some features that stand out to you as modern?
@LCRDKazrai6 жыл бұрын
I was looking at getting that one for myself in the future. I hear a lot of people say that the #1 feels solid, but is tip heavy and feels more of a cleaver than a longsword. What's your opinion on that point? I ended up getting myself the #7 since it seem to be the popular choice and has the most positive reviews. I can say that it stands up to those reviews quite well.
@terricus6 жыл бұрын
I have that one too. Nothing's loosened up though. Also, I dont know if this is what you think too, but I think if it feels "modern" it's because the aesthetics are basically flawless. When I look for imperfections I don't find any.
@ultrixcrucesignatus12616 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how to describe the "modern" feel. Zach hit part of it, it lacks any real handmade charm. Past that the scabbard (Which fits the sword very well.) is plain, and the leather isn't the best quality. On mine the fittings are a little rough up close, giving them a machine made look. I wouldn't say "cleaver", but as I said, it is pretty hefty in its handling. The point of balance on mine is about six and a half inches from the guard. I get decent control over the point, but it's not super responsive. Feels great in a cut though. The end of the fullers marks the center of percussion. The weight comes from the thick hexagonal cross section. It has a nice distal taper, but it's still pretty thick towards the tip. If you want something agile, I'd go for the #2 model from the video. All in all I'm very happy with mine. Ronin has done extremely well with their euro line from a functionality stand point. And for the price I'm not going to fault them for the aesthetics. (Or at least my view of the aesthetics.)

Bought this sword a few months ago and it's incredibly well made. Holds an edge very well and the balance and weight are amazing for long sword. Similar gripe about the grip(specifically the pommel shape), but I have smaller hands so it actually fits rather well with a 2 handed or 1 handed grip. Handguard is great, the sword overall is sturdy and it's almost on par with my zombie tools. If zombie told made a sword exactly like this I would buy it in a heartbeat, but for less money, this is a great sword.

I appreciate the honest review. Honestly I used to watch shadvirsity but I don’t like the fact that they are not honest about if something is affordable or not. I always respect honesty and I don’t respect shadvirsity because he said things were affordable just to get viewers and subscribers and he was pushing a narrative that the only people who helped his channel was the people who gave him money. But there are so many other ways people can help a channel get more subscribers like spreading the word to new people. But on the other hand I appreciate your honesty and your genuine reviews. Much respect to you.

Ronin Katana really stepped their game up, and their medieval swords are surprisingly good. I've gotten so much junk for the sub $500 price that this is one of the few rare gems of medieval swords that aren't costly.

Heres a question: how does a moderate "budget" sword like this stack up to the norm of swords back in their time?
@Ranstone6 жыл бұрын
That.. Is a really good idea... It would be hard though... Like nowadays, medieval swords had high and low budget models. Some swords used in combat (Well, found on battlefields) originally were worse made than cold steel. I bet Skall could compare a modern budget sword vs the quality of the average artifact we find... That might work!
@KatoCoyoteCombatWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
I understand that I'm replying to a year+ old comment but modern steel is almost perfectly homogeneous and we understand it to the point where we can differentiate between different levels of carbon as well as additives like manganese and chromium. Not to mention that our knowledge of heat treating and tempering is almost undoubtedly superior to what they knew in the medieval and European renaissance periods. So long as a "modern" sword doesn't cheap out, I wouldn't doubt that a model like this would outperform and hold up better than anything that would have been made back then.

So I just got this sword in late 2020-2021 I ordered Christmas day as a present to myself and arrived from them the second week of January, given the holiday and covid, I'd say that's pretty awesome shipping. The handle on my model doesn't have as much of a bur where the leather is sewn together, it lays much more flat against the handle. Maybe they changed how they stitched it after numerous reviews pointing it out. The blade itself feels awesome, and I cut threw our old Christmas tree from the top down to about 2 feet up from the base... The only complaint I have is the guard came a little loose after hacking threw the thick parts of the tree, but it's a sword not an axe, so I'll mark that up to abuse beyond intended use lol. The blade itself suffered no damage at all, no bends, no edge deformity, just a solid beast for the price.

It's good to see some high quality budget Euro swords are the market, I think that will only help HEMA grow in popularity. Price for quality cutters is a barrier for a lot of people. This is a step in the right direction. Ronin's Euro offerings were suspect at one time, while their katans were always a pretty good value. Nice to see that is moving to their Euro swords.

I just bought Euro model#1 the handle is the same. I would agree that it feels too round. It is 3.9 lbs. it is well made for the price; everything is nice and tight including the scabbard fit. The only other complaint I have is that the balance point is a little too forward for my taste. It balances about 6 inches in front of the guard, so it feels a little tip heavy but is not unwieldy. Other than that I have to say it cuts very well. It is well worth the price; great beginner sword. I have beat the crap out of it and it has held up well. Nothing has loosened and it has kept its edge.

The Ronin Euro 10 is much as you describe here, except that the blade is in more of a saber or messer shape. unfortunately the handle construction makes it technically not a messer, combined with the lack of side rings or nagles and if that were different you would have a proper kriegsmesser in the sub 300 range. The pommel and handle construction are like you describe here without the bulge in the middle and the shape is an oval or rounded rectangle tapering down a bit to meet the pommel which is a good size and weight IMHO and is peened. So basically it is a well heat treated, good edge geometry, single edged, historically innacurate hand and a half or bastard... saber. But it's a fun one and a good cutter.
@corwinhyatt5196 жыл бұрын
So the Ronin Euro 10 is a falchion. Nice to know. (Specifically after looking at the sword a F5A+ based on the Elmslie Typology for medieval single edged swords, some fairly good visual references from Shadiversity's Shad Brooks: www.deviantart.com/shad-brooks/art/Elmslie-typology-sword-models-629295619 and www.deviantart.com/shad-brooks/art/Elmslie-Typology-of-single-edged-medieval-swords-629294615 )
@gorgonzolastan6 жыл бұрын
@@corwinhyatt519 well I wouldn't say that it has a definite correlation in a European historical bladed weapon however it's has cruciform hilt it's is a single edged weapon that is slightly curved and the hilt is constructed in such a way that it's not a Messer nor is it a proper saber if I understand what makes the proper saber because it is not for you specifically by one hand it could easily be a two hand sword or a hand than a half really you could you could label it either way depending on how you feel and how big your hands are so it very well could have been a European weapon but I just can't think of any that actually look like that, but it is fun none-the-less and I guess you could think of it as a big ass falchion. I mean somebody somewhere probably made something like this in European history but I haven't seen the equivalent of it in a museum or online looking through museums pictures of stuff Ronin Katana Two Handed Long Sword #10 as a second note though it wouldn't necessarily need to be a hand and a half or a two-hand because of its weight it just has a help that allows for that. It would be a little poorly balanced if it had regular saber Hilt like think of British military of the 1700s or something

They are in the upper budget/lower midrange category, 425-600 USD, available on for example HEMA Supplies. They come blunt by default as he primarily makes training/practice swords, but can be ordered sharpened for some extra. They are kinda like the gold standard here in Hungary (well, duh, patriotism and stuff) but I would really like to see you get your hands on one and give an honest opinion.

That...is a mighty-fine looking blade. The leather wrap does look a bit awkward; I was expecting it to be uncomfortable from the first view of that seam. Not that there's an actual front and back to a sword, but I would think you'd get a smoother seam on the wider section (a "back," if you will) than on a narrow side. Easier to get the material to line up and be flatter. Maybe I'm wrong; just seems like that'd make more sense. I do like how the tang is peened - it blends nicely with the pommel. Overall a very nice sword, from a completely aesthetic point.

I believe their "Euro Model #1" sword might be more to your liking, at least when it comes to the handle. It still has the round section, but it looks to be a bit further down. However, the sword is also a bit bigger, and a bit heavier. I only found one review of it and it says that it's "a little too heavy" and it is only about 0,8 lb more than the model 2 sword. However, that could be enough to make it sluggish. I haven't tried it myself, I just thought id share my research.

How does it compare to the Ronin Katana Two Handed Long Sword #7?

And it will be back ordered before I have enough money to get one.

2.7k upvotes and only 3 downvotes? I don't think I've ever seen a like-to-dislike ratio that good before on a video with any substantial number of views. Impressive.

I have one and you MUST buy one. Really. Seriously thought, they're fantastic. There's an odd beauty about the straight lines and slight curves. If your hands are somewhat soft, then the wrap might surprise you, BUT, you'll adjust quickly. I'm a labourer, so, no issue. She's perfectly suited for cuts and thrusts, although I would say take care to exercise your wrists, as she has some heft. Still, handles like a hawk on speed. Utterly delightful sword. I'm in love with mine.

You need to do a video on Warhammmer 40k power weapons, storm shields and chain axes

Very nice sword for the price. I just got mine. But did they have to ship it coated in wax IN the scabbard? How do you clean semi-soft wax out of a scabbard completely?

I want to get into black smithing so badly. And not that power tool stuff, I mean that hammer and anvil old fashioned style.

Hey there Skallagrim. I just want to start off by saying I love your content. You have made me interested in materials arts with swords. I hope that things will go better for you with youtube and patreon and such, I really want to see your channel rise to the top. I was wondering if there maybe was any possibilities to look more into the weapons and fighting off a game called Warframe. Now, most of the weapons will probably be quite realistic, but I just would love to hear your thoughts of the games weapons and fighting styles with the different weapons, I think you might like it. I was also wondering if you could make more videos about greatswords. I have a huge interest in great swords for some reason and I was wondering if you could tell more about how to use them and their story, for I play DnD and I have a character who uses that and I like to describe my swings in a correct way. Thank you so much for making awesome content and videos, for giving me so much joy and happiness. I hope things are well, lots of praise from Norway, the land of the Vikings

Commenting on an old video, but I'm curious as to your opinions on the KoA (I think exclusive?) line of budget swords from Balaur Arms?
