This story never gets old. There must be hundreds of versions over the years. I saw another at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo, a deeply moving vignette featuring the story of one of the ronin who lived in poverty while waiting for the big day. It was a tragedy worthy of Shakespeare.

This is a peak movie, a top level masterful construction in all of the pieces.The caracters by Kawatani Takuzo and Yoko Asai are more than magnificent in the coplexity of feelings and drama, Yess Tamba is Tamba 'the Rock' /for me/ in every situation... *****
