Driving my 21 Year Old BMW E39 In The Snow!- Cold start and Snow Drive

I live in Scotland and about 15 years ago when I had a 525i Touring I had a new central heater boiler fitted in the house. As we put the old boiler into the back of the car the first few flakes of snow were starting to fall. And fell and fell for the next three days. So for the next 4 or 5 weeks I drove around in the snow with a couple of hundredweight of cast iron over the back wheels. No problem!

You're spot on about the tyres - I've an Audi A6 Quattro (3.0 TDI V6) and it's brilliant in the snow but if it were on bad tyres any FWD with a decent set of shoes on would run rings around it.

I’ve been driving for nearly 9 years now, I absolutely love driving in the snow, I think it’s the challenge of it haha, don’t understand why people just freak out when it starts snowing, never found it difficult personally!

As an owner of an E39 525i Sport for almost 17 years i totally agree its all about the tyres in the winter time, i have a spare set of wheels which i can swap over when the weather gets bad luckily not very often though.

What a nice car and a nice drive! Hang on to the E39, what a lovely car PS: Agreed that it’s more about tyres. In Germany we also change the tyres for winter - it does make some sense.

I used my E39 Touring a few times in the snow, sometimes when it was as deep as the sills. Decent tyres and it's good to go. My current E53 has no issues either.

Great stuff. I had Michelin Crossclimate on my E46 and they were really good. Not trying snow driving on my E12... yet.

Yes they are fantastic tyres! I find older vehicles tend to cope better than modern vehicles too!

I used to have an old E36 M3 in the mid 00s and that car would cruise better than most new cars today can and at 150mph lol the old BMWs and Mercedes were the best , new ones have too many toys fitted that break like apparently new Mercs have 45 ecus lol

Old is best! The fact that each seat now has an ecu is just crazy!

God I love winter! As I said on your instagram post “tyres tyres tyres” I would also say the uk should look at only winter or all session tyres in winter as they are much safer even in just frosty weather

Did it dip into freezing temperatures during the night? If not, you won't have ice. If yes, it can be even more treacherous than it looks.

Yes it dipped to -5 during the night, the next day was even more treacherous!

Enjoyed this a a fellow low mileage e39 Touring also with a lovely M57 owner👍🏼 sadly no snow here in the southeast 😢 Spot on, people always go on about 4 wheel drive and I often reply, good winter tyres are faaaaar more important as well as adapting driving style 👍🏼 looks like you need a new thermostat too 😉 Gee Whizz it’s tight down the front of the m57 in a. E39 🤦🏻‍♂️ Keep up the good videos 👍🏼
