You should idle it only for a few secs, then start driving to get the oil circulating and warm up the engine faster, otherwise you're wearing the o-rings, pistons, and gaskets much faster as you're not running the engine at operating temp. 5:00 bad idea. The engine needs far longer to heat up in idle speed. Furthermore you're diluting the oil, because the runs on a rich fuel mix, which is mingling with the oil then. After cold start is done and the revs are dropping (usually 10-15 sek) you should start driving.

Early this year we had 2 days with -36 and -37C in the morning. My all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 worked perfectly, as did my wife's 1.0L Ford Focus. I saw very few diesel cars on the road those two days :) I didn't even try to fire up my Dodge Ram with a 5,7L V8, but i'm sure it would start up, albeit with a ton of wear on the lifter rollers, and a bunch of new oil/coolant leaks resulting from the rapid expansion of the aluminium unevenly crushing the gaskets.

Why turn on the heater when the engine is cold? To make it take even longer to warm up? Why would you drive when the engine wasn't up to its operating temperature yet? It hasn't even reached 70 degrees. Starting a combustion engine in this cold weather is a huge STRESS for the engine! You're killing it painfully and slowly....

It is better to drive lightly right way than to idle the car in the cold, as everything will get up to temp faster and result in less time running cold. As long as you aren’t putting high load or revs, driving is better than idling. It would take 10 minutes to hit warm oil temp driving and 30-40 if you are sitting idling. Oil not coolant

All modern BMW have Electric Heating anyway so even when the engine is cold, the cabin can warm up quickly. No point in being cold then ;)

@@jacobhauenstein For me my old Audi A3 2005 takes about 15 mins to begin going over my minimum temperature of 50 celsius and about 20-25 to 90. But I usually drive after turning on my car and removing all the ice and snow from the car. Then it takes time. Constant driving it takes about 10 mins to go up to 90 celsius but when i turn on heating it goes down to 70 so I'd say usually 15 mins of driving its at its optimal temperature.

you can't get operating temp in winter by just waiting pal that would take half of the day no one does that, just drive at low rpm and you'll be good. show me a video where you are waiting in winter for your car to warm up to operating temp. and heater doesn't affect the engine temp pal that's like 0.1% going to heater and he does that to unfreeze the car lmao you want to say that you are driving a cold freezer in the winter?

These temperatures are every Winter over here. But the cars are doing just great. Fun to just drift on the snow/ice The ocean freezes also so we drive the cars on there also😂

Warming up without driving in such cold conditions isnt good for the engine. I can tell you this as a mechanical engineer. Driving with rpms up to max 2500 when cold is good, after 70 C° oil temp you can go to higher rpms.

I live in coldest capital, i drive Toyota Harrier. I have never had any problem with cold start. Most of cars in ma city are toyota they all have no problem in such cold. And here temperature reaches -30C and low. Im wondering at -27C BMW struggle to start?
@sack84393 жыл бұрын
It didnt struggle to start, its just sports cars rarely should cold start, or for that matter no car should cold start but most people dont care with for example a Toyota.

Always make me funny when some youtube authors called videos like that. I live in a middle of Russia and -30°C is quiet often winter temperature. Last winter i was starting my car for 2 hours when it was -40 outside 😅

If temp is below 0 degrees (C/F), then it does NOT go up to a certain value, but DOWN to a certain value. Right? 😉

I would check that thermostat. It should get to an operating temp regardless of the weather. Maybe yours is stuck open. Service the car, you are long overdue.
