That radiator drain petcock is plastic. Be damn careful putting a wrench on it.

According to Volvo the D5 is selfbleeding by the two small plastic pipes connected to the top of the expansion tank.

Thanks for this awesome video. Youve made it seem really easy. I was reading about the need to have a vacuum to purge the system of air. Has anyone followed this method on a P3 model with success.

Hey, thanks for the clear video and explanation! I am having some problems, while opening the expansion tank cap. Is it common that on a cold engine it is really hard to open the cap? The more I turn it counter clockwise, the tougher it gets to turn it and seems impossible without any tools. I am doing this on cold engine so it shouldnt be pressurized. Now I am thinking is it safe to keep turning? Coolant level is just above MIN. 2.0T petrol btw
@sandymcintosh
@sandymcintosh 3 жыл бұрын
most likely cause is .. as the coolant cools to cold, it contracts in volume and creates a partial vacuum in the expansion tank, making it difficult to remove the cap. just persevere or get the engine well up to temp and try just turning the cap to see if it's about to open ok. be careful though of very hot coolant.

hmm one question. I am replacing my AC condenser, and engine radiator on my 2012 v60 but I don't want to do a full flush,,. just top up new coolant as needed. since the coolant in the expansion tank is clean as fresh.filtered lime juice.. 🙄.. Am I taking a shortcut here I should not? on my P2. s80 the coolant was way "nastier" when I first got to cooling system repairs.. there there was no question about doing it or not.

I've followed this process and somehow mine will only take 4l of fluid, in the same 1l concentrated coolant / 1l de-ionised water process. I have a 2012 D5 XC70 (D5244T15 engine). I've taken it for a drive to get it up to temp and the expansion tank now seems to just contain de-ionised water, no green stuff to be seen. I'd appreciate any tips anyone can offer 🤞 wondering if it might be a dodgy thermostat

Hi, DriveLife!! I really enjoy this video. I was searching the internet for documents or a video showing how to bleed the air in the cooling system and I think this is the only one that says the system is self bleeding. I have a V60Rdesign with the B4204T9 engine (4 cylinder Drive-E engine). Its expansion tank and the two small plastic pipes that conect to the radiator are the same, so I guess the procedure for flushing the system will be the same. Do you know or anyone knows if this procedure is the same for my car? Thanks for the video!!

@@adrianottawau I still don’t know if the system can self bleed. The Volvo shop manual indicates the use of a vacuum equipment. To walk on the safe side, I bought a cheep Chinese equipment that uses compressed air to generate vacuum in the car cooling system to fill the system with fresh fluid. I made a custom expansion tank cap in the late to safely use that equipment.

Do you know where the temp sensor is on these and whether you need to drain the coolant to replace it? Mine is reading as not working on a fault code.

I didn't follow this method because I didn't want to introduce air into the system I put the car on ramps removed the expansion tank cap and put a clean jug under the drain plug removed the plug, as the old mix is draining I top up the expansion tank with fresh mix till the fresh mix starts to drain then re tighten the drain plug and set the level in the tank, next run the car up to temp (20 minute drive) with the heater set on full heat then repeat the process till clean mix appears at the drain.

The coolant you used turned out to be blue once diluted but it starts off green ;o am I blind or can u confirm ? ;D My S60 D5 2010 has the blue coolant, I can only find blue coolants online that have to be changed every 2-3 years... My old toyota has the red coolant that lasts 7 years., is it a good idea to flusht he system and switch to a better coolant?
@GymChess
@GymChess 2 жыл бұрын
A late answer but who cares... Yes, it's green even though the old coolant looks blue(ish). As for doing a flush, etc., I don't see any reason to mess around with that as long as the coolant looks normal and doesn't smell "weird". Every 2-3 years would be overkill to say the least. Make it 10-20 years or 100K+ miles. It's a sealed system and since there's no air it can't rust either. One can easily measure the freezing point which is basically the only thing to think about if you live in a cold(er) climate like Sibiria or somewhere in Canada.

I have tried draining my coolant this morning on my P3. My cooling system should hold 9 Litres according to the manual but I'm only seen a fraction of that actually drain out? Has that been your experience? Is there coolant in other areas of the engine/heater etc hence why you need to flush multiple times?
@drivelife.channel

Yes some will staying in the cooling jacket of the engine and the transmission cooler :) thats the reason for the flush :)

Did you refill the final mix with tap water or de-ionised water?
@lepsycho3691
@lepsycho3691 2 жыл бұрын
Go de-ionised or distilled, never tap water! The minerals in the tap water will corrode the inside of the cooling system and bad things will happen! hope it helps!

In order to do a correct coolant flush, also the water hose at the oil cooler needs to be taken off for the removal of the old coolant. I do recommend a vacuum filler for coolant systems that works with comoressed air. So no more massaging the hoses and a complete refill with almost no air is done in about 5 minutes.

Sometimes these drains get clogged. In that case I prefer to remove the clip from the lower tube and pull it gently from the radiator.
