In today's episode I'am going to talk about Common Issues with Volvo S60, Volvo XC60, Volvo XC70, what to look for when you want to buy one of those models and what is the maintenance cost if you already have one.
Lots of things can be done home or inexpensively if you know what to watch for and tackle it before its too late.
Disclosure:
The car in this video is not your car nor your friends car. Problems and issues mentioned, are statistically the most common on this brand and model of the car. If you didn't experience any of them, I'm honestly happy for you and you are one of the happy owners, but chance that these issues will occur in future is very high.
Video is made for educational purposes in good faith to help budget for possible repairs.

This is such a technical and accurate analysis of the issues and reliability of these vehicles. Some of those issues are common with older models. Just a note here, I have a Volvo S40 P1 and I found out that if you apply a little bit of pressure on the fan control knob it works just fine without skipping or missing clicks, just the smallest amount of pressure. And also the eat through bushings and engine mounts like nothing else but that is maybe caused by the pour road quality where I live.

Thanks for this list... helpful for my P3 XC70. Here's a tip on fixing the blower fan whine, without any actual repair: When it makes that noise, it's gotten off balance. If the problem hasn't been going on too long (years) then just change the speed setting to higher or lower and the noise should quiet basically completely. It will return when you put the fan again on the speed it seems to occur at. Then just turn the speed up or down again and it will go away (the fan re-centers itself). Keep doing this whenever it occurs and after a while it will disappear completely. You just need to re-wear the nylon fan back into a centered position by not using the speed that throws it off. It took me a few months altogether, but is totally disappeared and 0 work on my part, especially fixing a blower that otherwise works fine. ☮ gh

Hi there, did you buy the T6? Any problems ?
@RockstarBruski
@RockstarBruski 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we bought it! We had to have a few things fixed but we knew that from the pre purchase inspection. The vacuum pump needed rebuilt and top of headlight mounts needed secured. $337 USD total from an independent volvo repair shop for everything. Other than that we just did a oil change and it's been working flawlessly for 5 months since we bought it. It is very comfortable and luxurious. The infotainment screen is not great and mostly useless but the backup camera works fine and we pair our phones and play music through the usb firefly Bluetooth decice that I installed in under 5 minutes. The drivers aids like lane departure and cruise distance following, etc all works well if I keep the cameras and sensors clean. We did have to buy one extea keyfob since it only came with one keyfob and that was $360 USD from an independent key place. Volvo Dealer wanted about the same price for the keyfob. The gauges behind the wheel are a bit small font for me to read while driving and I see the new Volvo have since gone to larger configurable gauges. The engine is powerful enough for us but my 2008 Honda Odyssey van v6 engine feels more powerful and more torque as the Volvo engine seems to rev pretty high compared to the feel of the power which might be the vovlos transmission as well. Overall we are really enjoying the Volvo and so far no problems!

This is a very informatics video. I own a 2011 xc60 t6 from new, and I only put 82k miles on it. It has the similar issues in this video over time: windshield leaking at about the 4th year; pump vault leaking, I see oil leak but not yet fixed; squeaking noise I think it is from pcv cap, will replace it when I can’t deal with the noise; fuel system seal leak; broken rear suspension coil. Replace cabin air filter is a pain job. It is a nice car, fund to drive, but with many problems making me rethink to have another Volvo

Definitely not, auto box slams between gears, paint so soft every bush or shopping bag as left its mark. Steering wheel finish peeling off. Outdoor temp gauge showing 10 degrees low. Most noisy squeaky interior of any car. All 4 alloys in shocking condition. Usual very soft windscreen coating, wipers mark it permanently. Dealers only interested in selling new cars. All owner forums full of desperate tales of 100s of faults with threads that have been ongoing for many years without being resolved. In accurate electronic oil level sensor and £80 for a dipstick. I could probably live with all these apart from the auto gear shift slamming between gears. Owners have even changed gearboxes just for the fault to remain. I found this video whilst looking for help with even more issues. KZbin and all forums full of faults and unhappy owners.

BRAVO! Very Excellent information, even better than the information provided by VOLVO. 1. Squeaking & Noisy Brake: Now i do understand why my brand new Volvo V40 brake keep squeaking like an old car. Numerous visit to the Volvo Service Center didn't resolved the issue until years of usage. Various explanation from the Volvo Service Advisor & Technical didn't make any sense. Design faulty? 2. Body Parts Gap: I did experienced the same thing with my rear bumper. Out of blue, the upper part pop-up and the Volvo Service Adviser claimed that the car hit something(?) which never happened. Weirdo! 3. Burning Gases: The turbo afterburner smells in the cabin after quick acceleration. Happened from Day 1 until today. Various visit to Service Center didn't resolved the issue. 5 years and counting! 4. The steering rack failure: Multiple steering error message for years but visit to Volvo Service Center didn't trace anything until total breakdown during long journey, mileage only 50,000km. Lemon Car? 5. FORD vs VOLVO Tech: Does it because of poor Ford technologies or Volvo that caused all these issues? Hope GEELY & AISIN fixed the issues. I do love my Volvo V40 because of superb safety & artistic design but Reliability & CX of Volvo suffered badly under Ford custodian?

I agree same for us with exception of the front struts. We drove ours after buying used at 56k miles until husband totaled out our Volvo 2 weeks ago at 90k miles. Ours drove like a brand new car. Ours also looked like a brand new car with exception of silver paint & headlights. The paint peels up on silver colored paint. Our headlights turned yellowish & were foggy looking but did not affect our actual lights. It does mean something to service properly & care for anything immediately & Volvo XC60 will drive into 300k miles

My Citroen C5 2.9 V6 has the Aisin AM6. It is a nice transmission but due to some people thinking it doesnt need an oil change because the manufacturer said it is lifetime oil, they have issues after 250 000 km. Mine does have harsh shifts cold and sometimes warm. Basically the "Brain" of the gearbox starts dying over time and needs to be recycled or bought new. But generally, Aisin makes very good gearboxes.

One of the biggest problem I have encountered is the Haldex system. If you hear a loud thumping noise from the rear of your XC60, a sound like you are running over some cats-eyes on the road, but not regular, when you drive the XC60 for the first trip of the day it means your Haldex system is low on oil. Initially the sound comes on when you turn left and as time goes on when you turn right and left. My Volvo dealer thought it was from the Brakes/suspension / Tyers/ Haldex module - you name it . Finally a Land Rover technician told me that it is common problem he has seen in Free Lander 2. I contacted LR because both XC60 and the Freelander use Haldex Generation 4 Haldex clutch. The Major problem was that the manufacturer does not mention servicing the Haldex system at all ( may be they do now) and the Haldex unit is not connected to the On -Board diagnostic system. If you hear a thumping noise from the rear fill up the unit with Haldex clutch oil ( only Haldex oil Gen 4) , or replace the Haldex filter and oil if you haven't done for some time . Prudent to replace the filter and oil every 2-3 years.

I have a 2014 XC60 with 111k miles, regularly maintained. No issues at all until about 100k miles when a number of pricey problems emerged: replaced all engine and transmission mounts, replaced oil pressure pump, and replaced both CV boots. Transmission is starting to leak and lunge at every gear shift so looks like more repairs ahead. Headlights replaced because they were fogged and looked much older than it’s age. I must use Chevron gas always or else the check engine light comes on with a catalytic converter code. Interior pieces are starting to break or peel but leather seats are holding fairly well. I washed and wax the car regularly so the exterior is wearing quite well. I’d say if you’re going to buy an older Volvo make sure it has a good maintenance history and the issues I mentioned above have already been addressed.

Great, that popping sound sure is a mystery to find out and finally you answered it. The front windscreen sure is leaking during heavy rain above the driver on my XC60. Does the gearbox leaking a common issue..mine is leaking and the mechanic suggested to replace the seal cover preferably with the spring attached which original Volvo parts doesn't have, only from OEM.

@@thillaiambalam5661 did you get your windshield repaired yet and did it solve the leaking? I get a small amount of water running down the inside of the driver side windshield but wasn't sure if it is windshield or sunroof drains clogged.

@@timtaylor8557 yes I did the repairs twice. Initially at the driver's side then it moved to the passenger side. The technician applied a soap solution and used compressed air to blow out from inside the car and found the leak location. I did it with the 3rd part windscreen installer. It was a big relief knowing the problem was solved without removing the entire windscreen. Sealant was applied on the leak areas. No cost was involved as the shop was newly opened. I do not have a sunroof. No further leakage was observed. Happy 👍😀

Not sure why I had an impression that Volvos are rock solid. I'm looking at a 2016 V70 D3 manual, and I understand all mentioned issues apply to V70 as well. This makes me feel I'm searching for unicorns (reliable cars)... About that water sloshing sound, I guess that's where they came up with "Ocean Race" trim name

Agreed. I loved my 5 cyl T5 XC90 and now my T6 XC60. The T6 on a smaller car is very fast. If you don't mind, how do you go about cleaning your sunroof? Do you clean the lines with something or just the area around the drains?
@bernardaflores1720
@bernardaflores1720 3 жыл бұрын
@@bedandbreakfastfan7088 Very simple warm soapy water and a funnel with a plastic tubing insert. Inset the tubing into the 2 forward drains and add the water to the funnel. You should see the junk coming down. The rear drains are on the trunk, left and right side, the drain tubing is disconnected and blow some air into the tubing, not at high pressure. The junk should show up by the rails.

Just to add from my experience (2011 xc60): steering pump tends to emit a whining noise. Some advice to replace the fluid container, change fluid. I did all that (cost me ridiculous 800USD) but it did not solve anything. Another issue is front bushings which get creaking sound, especially when they are cold, replacement was suggested by the dealership at 1900 USD. I realise that this video is 3 years old but I got that offer almost 2 years ago. Then I get pulling to one side which the dealership explains as natural but this is the only car i have ever driven to do that. Finally there is the crazy alternator which is simply insufficient to power the car - steering causes lights to dim quite a lot, they changed alternator (job for 1900 USD and they forgot to charge me the price of the alternator 3 years ago which would have been 700 more) and it stayed the same. Your video is good but the prices are not realistic in my area (Florida). Anyway, interesting video, i wonder how it is with coolant hoses...

I am the original owner of a 2011 XC 60 T6 AWD with 170800 miles now. I took the new car on 2/2011 and dealer fixed the brake vacuum pump leak ( 9/2014) under warranty. Dealer also replaced battery on 4/2014, 10/2014 and 6/2017 all under warranty (the last battery replacement cost was waived by Volvo US headquarter after I wrote a letter to them) Dealer found out there was an issue that battery was draining power and they fixed the problem. All these years I don't have any issue at all and this car is running like new. I did have the dealer replaced spark plugs on 2/2022 at 161406 miles. I also replaced (had the professional did the job, I am not that handy) the fuel pressure sensor, pvc oil trap, mass air flow sensor, radiator , flushed the brake fluid and all four suspension systems on 2/2022 for $4000 (parts and labor) due to check engine light and some codes that I forgot and this was what I paid in total repair cost for the 12 1/2 years of ownership. Never drain/fill the transmission fluid (dealer told me it is "life time" and they don't do this kind of work). Never change the timing belt and water pump. I don't have any other issues that you mentioned in your video (I guess I am lucky). All the lights look just like new. Right now the only issue is that I need to replace the engine torque damper. Left side exterior mirror won't fold and the mirror itself can be adjusted only by hand. I won't bother to spent money for this repair. I changed engine oil faithfully with Mobile one synthetic oil (now using high mileage oil only every 7500 miles). I waxed my car twice a year and wash the car regularly. The car still looks like new inside and out. The acceleration is still quick with ease and the engine runs very quiet. I put Chevron Techron into my gas tank from time to time all these years but I don't know for sure this has anything to do with smooth engine running at all. I do intend to keep this car for another two years (I drive less miles now) and probably will buy a Volvo EX60 on 2025 or a Tesla. I am very happy with my 2011 XC 60 T6
