1. O'Sullivan is almost out, 2. The referee cannot respot the cue-ball correctly.
Ronnie O'Sullivan vs Yan Bingtao, 2018 World Grand Prix - Round 2, Last 16
I forgot to mention in the video that Yan Bingtao was 17 years and 283 days old when he played in the 2017 Northern Ireland Open final. About two and a half months younger than O'Sullivan in the 1993 UK Championship final.
The statistics shown in the video correspond to the date of the match.
Cesar Muroya created a unique editing technique to extract the essence of the game without losing the drama involved. Contextual information is also an innovation appreciated by viewers.
This format is not intended to substitute the full version but rather to make snooker more accessible to new fans. The fluency and atmosphere of the game stay in a shorter length video, allowing even experienced fans to enjoy snooker at any time.

One issue is that the screen the marker has is tiny. My idea for this is that they use hawkeye to track the balls and coloured light projection directly onto the table when a position has to be replaced. Hawkeye seems to have gone out of fashion for snooker though, so I suppose we are as far away from such a system now as ever.

They could make a deal with the TV coverage people, then the ref could simply look at the live coverage on a decent sized tablet and correct accordingly. Unless there's a delay in the live coverage... then surely with software and a tablet should work (there is software that syncs the before/after images)

to save time go to 08:40. regards referee, you need to consider what he is seeing as reference, - at 09:14 this shows the cue ball in the correct position, but the reference picture changes at 09:23 showing a difference position. hardly the referees fault that he was provide with an incorrect position. Then when Ronnie queried, they again present an incorrect image to the referee at 09:45 which indicates he has the ball in the correct place (according to the image provided). Clearly this was not correct, i am unsure where the tv producers got the wrong reference from, - originally the referee has the length correct and moved the que back towards the cushion based on the image he was provided with. The referee even says at 09:52 "i also thought it was further but the screen says different" and at 10:52 ! Stop giving the Referee such a hard time, he asked for an image and was given duff info. The cameraman did not correct it, the cameraman showed him a difference image which the referee then reacted to. The referee was patient and did everything correct based on the information provided to him. Player and referee were let down by those providing the images.

This. Ref actually did good joob. He sorted it out and it went right in the end. It is clear that it was his fault whos job was to provide that reference picture. People need to remember that what you see in youtube (=in tv broadcast) its not what ref sees. He did not see what we saw, he saw different picture and placed ball according to that and as @andy said you can even hear ref saying that he thought also that the white was in different place.

You are incorrect in suggesting that the referee was at fault here. He was replacing the cue ball based on an image on the screen that was incorrect. It is also inaccurate to suggest poor refereeing by asking Yan what he thought. This is specifically referred to in the rules of snooker as consultation following a miss, where the referee will check with both players when replacing balls. The rules also state that the referee may use other evidence at his/her disposal in order to make decisions, and it can be seen that Jan goes and checks a replay from a cameraman. So in fact this is a good example of excellent refereeing!

@lukeyxo
@lukeyxo 4 жыл бұрын
because the table wouldn't be the same with the fraction and shit
@oNtuobAwoH
@oNtuobAwoH 4 жыл бұрын
It's not simple to make it precise enough (although it is possible), but the bigger problem is that the table has to be well lit, which would interfere with the projection clarity and light intensity. The projector would also have to be installed so that there's no way for it to move from the originally mapped position. Lastly, it would be a considerable additional expense and a logistic nightmare to implement discipline-wide, whereas the camerawork is already there and is easily accessible.
@oNtuobAwoH
@oNtuobAwoH 4 жыл бұрын
A better solution would be some sort of sensor + laser system, wherein the sensors would detect the balls within a table-sized matrix, and a laser would be able to pinpoint the exact position of a selected ball. That would also be expensive, but much more elegant and significantly more error proof.

@@Patrick-fz8ee For generations, the people of the world were happy this way, watched over by their two guardians. The first guardian was mysterious and beautiful, with flowing hair that glistened silvery white, glowing eyes of deepest blue and skin paler than milk. Every step she took caused new stars to burst from the ground and leap into the sky, and her people worshipped her as a symbol of feminine beauty. They called her Moon. The second guardian was strong and handsome, with warm golden eyes, copper-brown skin and a mane of soft black curls. Even his very laugh could make spring roses bloom from their buds, and his followers adored him for his easy ways and the bright glorious smile with which he could light up the whole world. He was the Sun, and despite their differences, he shared with the Moon a great friendship and respect. Although the humans loved their Sun and Moon, they took little notice of the other force with whom they shared their land. The Wind was vicious, and he had long been jealous of the power the Sun and the Moon held over the earth, and of the love that the people had for them. Slipping through windows and under doors, the Wind whispered poisonous lies Nobody loved the Wind, for he blew icy breath across the land, and howled in the ears of children.One day, the Wind began wondering how he could claim the land as his own. "If the Sun and the Moon go to war," the Wind pondered to himself, "they will destroy each other and I will be free to take their lands and people for myself!"

@@waynewayne9693 and @HowAboutNo I am glad to see a couple other right thinking people. I am always amazed at the "armchair referees" in comments who actually understand little about how it works. Referees are competency tested every year, players are not. Yes, Ronnie was surely correct (his feel and intuition are amazing), but not nearly as exaggerated as this video makes it appear. I haven't read all comments but literally NONE of the comments I have read even mention the fact that when this video switches view back and forth, then not only yes, the White ball is changing position, but THE BACKGROUND IS ALSO CHANGING POSITION! So yes, position is off a little but not nearly as much as the stills make it seem. When Yan Bingtao was asked by Referee his opinion, he should have responded, "Put it where Ronnie says he wants it" and that would have ended the incident but I am not certain of Yan's English skills so maybe he didn't know what to say. By the Rules, the Ref is required to "consult" both players but he is also free to abide by or completely ignore their opinions in this matter.

Think it was obvious that the referee was, for some reason, being fed different images to what the commentators and TV audience was seeing. I mean, anyone in the hall could have placed the ball correctly based on the images we saw. Well handled all round, though the commentator might have countenanced that possibility.

Enough with the suggestions on projectors and lasers. Build a time machine. Then you can just rewind the table to EXCACTLY where all the balls were prior to the foul. The player won't even need to chalk for the second try.

Instead of all this talk about technology why not just use an overlay same as they do now but use a bird’s eye view shot instead of the broadcast view. That would ensure the ball is in exactly the same place every single time and there would be no need to spend money to get technology involved.

It would be so easy to take the very critical balls off the table with the marker and simply mark the position with chalk spray, just a small point mark would be enough.

Should not argue with Ronnie. He is ultimate. He is snooker. He must have been born on a snooker table. He has a snooker brain. We do not need camera picture. This man seems to have a photographic memory. If all the balls were removed in the middle of a game I would not be surprised if he was able to put them all back exactly in their right places.

I know this isn't a massive issue but to be fair the implementation of the technology is very poor. They have the screen and comparisons all ready but the ref needs to follow instructions and look at it from far away. There must be a better way to place balls back on spots. Loads of referees have to second guess themselves and ask for other opinions because they can't tell from where they're from.

It's not for Yan to say, but still , he could have said "Ronnie is right" so that would have been the end of it. It would not decide the match if Ronnie plays 2 cm nearer. Ronnie knew that too but he insisted because he knew he was right, and I understand him.
