When I worked in McDonald's in Romford, east London, the guys would always ask me if I was related to the great man. Alas no. Inevitably, I was given the nickname "Ronnie". Thanks for posting🎉

Cracking player. It was a nice touch by club skipper Alan Hansen: after missing most of the '88-'89 season through injury, he allowed Ronnie to collect the FA Cup, even though he returned to the side. Whelan had skippered the club magificently in Hansen's absence.

Whelan didn't get the recognition he deserved while he was playing. The other Liverpool players knew how important he was to the team and they publicly stated this, but Whelan was never nominated for player of the year, while his central midfield partner Steve McMahon was. Whelan had excellent passing and shooting skills, knit together Liverpool's play and was very dependable. Regretably his club and international career petered out due to injury and he just faded away from both club and national squads.

Rubbish. Of course he got plenty recognition. Steve Highway was no different. They both straddled two different eras in their Liverpool careers. Steve from start of the 70s into the 80s & Ronnie 80s into the 90s. They all got plenty medals & that's the only recognition you need.

Shows how good the Liverpool midfield was in the 80's. People like Case and Sheedy had to move on to get games. Ronnie managed a place somewhere in the MF all through into the 90's. He was competing with people like McMahon, Spackman, McDonald, Wark. Molby, Johnston, Houghton, Barnes and later on, Hutchison, Redknapp, McManaman and Michael Thomas...you can't keep those guys out of a side and not be useful...

It's quite a test of memory looking back on Ronnie Whelan's Anfield career but when he started in the team as a youngster he really hit the ground running. Maybe it was his energy, and no doubt ability, coupled with the experience around him that made it such a good fit. I do recall he had to deal with injuries here and there, inevitable team changes and having to find his role in the team again. Despite the competition for places he still was a regular first team player and it's a Liverpool career to be proud of for sure, but part of me thinks it could have been even better, given the impact he made at such a young age.

What a player!!! Here’s a story. Pull up a chair. I was manning a border crossing point from Republic of Ireland/Northern Ireland about 90/91. I boarded a coach on its way into NI. A couple at the back of the coach must have heard my accent & shouted down,” are you a scouser?” I told them that I was. I got chatting & they were Whelans parents

It was in there. Loved it, too - the way Ronnie went for a left foot pass, and when the rebound came back he thought: "Sod it" and curled in a beauty with his so-called "weaker" right foot. Sheer quick-thinking confidence and skill.
