I bought a brand new GPZ1000 RX in 1986. It was a good bike, but as you mentioned in part 1, not as good as the 900. Regarding the extremely snug fit of the battery, and the difficulty of getting it back out again, here's what I did. Take the battery out. lay a length of plastic packing tape into the battery box. put the battery back in and cut the tape so that you have enough to make a handle. Superglue the two ends together, and away you go! I hope you find this helpful. As regards the exhaust, a firm by the name of JAMA used to do a full replica system. Looking forward to part 3! Best wishes from the UK!

I love that feeling of reviving an old engine. I just did this about 3 weeks ago with an older Snapper Rear Engine rider mower that sat for 10+ years outside. Check the oil, good, check for spark, good, check for fuel delivery, good, pull the pull cord about 20 times to loosen the cylinders up and then spray some starter fluid in the combustion chamber and it ran the first pull for 15 seconds. Did that 2 more times and it was running! It was so exciting! Now to just do the rest of the restore. I should record it and put it on KZbin!

As someone who has been rebuilding and reviving bikes for the past year and a half. I learned the first thing I want to do is make sure theirs oil in the engine and make sure is has spark and compression and at least get the engine to bark off ( just a spraying gas or starter fluid into the intake ) before I start doing other work on it. Nothing is more disheartening ( or a waste of time ) than doing a ton of work on the bike only to find out it wont start up. This also allows me to map out everything I need to look into doing to have a fully functioning bike and getting a parts list together.

Wow, a blast from the past. My best friend traded his GPZ1100 in for one of these back in the day. Unfortunately a freak accident claimed his life very shortly after and this model of bike seemed to slip into obscurity pretty quickly which is a shame. This is the first mention I've seen of that model almost since the day of the accident some 35 odd years ago. Happy and sad memories all in one rush of nostalgia. I miss my bike crazy friend to this day though.

That front drain bolt is for the oil cooler and lines. It's about 1/3 quart in there. BTW, I've been riding this bikes younger, bigger brother for near 25 years (1996 GPz1100). Keihin CV carbs: been there, done that. New CV diaphragms, new float valves needles and seats, and new float bowl seal at a bare minimum. The rest can be cleaned out no problem, but you absolutely must find and write down the number of turns each mixture screw is set at for a starting point as they are a royal PITA to adjust when on the bike, even with a special tool....then again you're probably looking to put pod air filters on and not the original airbox, so they will be a bit easier to reach.

Nice work on the chain tensionner, I am very happy to discover the "how-to" regarding this specific upgrade. Keep in mind though that the tensionner chain itself has a wear limit and you should check it against the values in the manual (you have to measure x amounts of chain rivets and is the length is too long the chain is toasted) Just do it once before serious usage of this bike.

I've owned a gpz900 two zx10s and the gpz 1100 . I completely restored one of my zx10s , I've rebuilt several gpz engines . They're great bikes ! They've several little niggles like the tensioner you fixed , the biggest issue can be the 5th gear jumping out , the second gear dogs don't engage fully and wear if abused , bad shifting ! I had to replace 2nd and 5th gears on the 1100 , you can access it by just removing the lower part of the motor . I love to see you young guys going through what I did ! It's fun but it can be a pain at times . Oh and just put grease on your fingers and pull the gasket through ! Good luck and greetings from the UK !🙂

Nice bike man! Glad you are bringing it back to life.... They definitely are worth it. I've got a 88 ZX10 I'm bringing back to life. It was headed to the recycling center, doomed to die, a guy that worked for them, he got it for what the scrap yard was going to pay for it, I asked him about buying it from him, but, he said no, he was going to fix it. Well a couple of months go by, I happen to stop by his house, I see it in the carport. With the tank and the seat off of it, and the valve cover gone off the top of the engine, and I asked him, did you find out what was wrong with it? he said no, I'm just going to scrap it I think it's locked up.... I asked him again about buying it, paid $125.00 for it, and took it home! That was 3 or 4 years ago. I said three she said four. I still say three. started on it a couple weeks ago got it back in time, where they had pulled the cams up,and made it jump time. cleaned and rebuilt the carburetors, you know the regular stuff.when they have been sitting. about got her back together. I like it. It's kind of a heavy bike compared to today's bike's, which have a lot more motor and a lot less frame. It's old but it ain't lacking. And will speak for itself.... Kawasaki's are awesome bikes, no matter the year or the model. Best of luck to you on your project. Ride safe..if you still do.

Good work. As another commenter noted, at 9:55 there is a crack in the clutch basket. Maybe the basket should be replaced before there are more missing chunks of metal wandering around inside the engine. Sometimes combustion deposits become trapped on the sealing edge of the valves. Running the bike hard in high rpms can correct this. Or not. A guy can remove the shraeder valve on the compression tester hose, then squirt carb cleaner down the spark plug hole. By turning the engine over, as in a compression test, and holding the thumb over the open end of the hose, carb cleaner is forced up into the valve area. Pst,pst, pst. It works and can raise the compression. Running too high of an octane of fuel can cause this condition.

A great bike you have chosen to restore, love those 80s liter bikes. FYI: Coils rarely ever go bad, however, if you want to restore them for an extra set, it is time consuming. First, separate the coil from the wires and measure them. Usually it is the metal, corrosion. Secondly, inside the boots are either metal or copper leads; totally fouled or corroded. Soak them in a good rust formula for days. If needed, put a Dremel on them. The wires and coils will read 0 ohms; however, inside each spark boot is a resister so the entire boot now has to be taken apart. Third, take everything apart by cutting the boots with a razor or scalpel. A small incision will allow you to slip it past the rubber boots when you put them back. You can glue them or cement glue the incision once they are fixed or the boot is replaced. That is it, everything now reads 0 Ohms and should be perfect. I do this all the time and have three sets of wires and boots for each bike.

More excited about this than I was for the Fiero . I’m in the process of building/modifying my own bike right now .

Having owned an '85 GPz 900R, I'm loving this as much as the Fiero series! You should look into getting the same kind of plug boots as the original though, as they also serve to seal the plug wells. With your current set up you're bound to get a lot of water and crud down the wells eventually.
