When I first started playing, I used a Bluesband harmonica, an $8 harp. I lucked out and found one that was air tight and worked well. As I was learning, I quickly wanted to upgrade to a better harmonica and settled on the Hohner Blues Harp. I have a set of 7 of them and love them. I have since managed to get a set of Hohner Marine Band 1896 and I have a single Hohner Special 20 in the key of C. Finally I have a 12-harp set of Easttop 008k. And I love every single harp that I own. I play in my room on my own. I don't yet play in public and I don't play in a band where we practice all the time. I'll get there one day.

The first of the favorites I got was a Bb deluxe for playing those third pos triphop/sad blues type of stuff, and I was in love instantly! Then I got a seydel 1847 (with steel reeds) and it's different but in a good way and I like to be versatile! Sometimes it's a blast just picking up that special 20👀

Thanks, Ronnie! I've always played Lee Oskars and Special 20s because they seemed pretty good and the price was right. I picked up a MB Deluxe and a Crossover from Rockin' Rons lately and I love the MB Deluxe (even better than the Crossover). The extra $8 I spent was well worth it. The MBD is super airtight, easy to play and has a great rasp. Love the way the octaves sound! I just ordered 3 more.

I have tried the 1896, Deluxe, and Crossover, Seydel's Solist Pro, Fender Midnight Special, 1847 Classic, Silver, and Nobel, Suzuki's Manji, Promaster, and Bluesmaster, Lee Oskars, Rockets and Amps (not Lows), and Blues Harps. My favs are 1847 Classics and Marine Band Deluxes. They both sound, feel, and play very differently, and they satisfy my two styles of play: slow blues and fast blues. I like 1847s for that slow, heavy, mournful sound. The sound is bigger and fatter and fuller, and the bends are harder but strong. I like MBDs for being the classic brassy sound with easy bends. I never have to work with brass bends. They're easy and natural, and they cut through the mix perfectly. Both harps also have beautiful modern construction. Great coverplates, great wood combs, and great reeds (gotta love easy-access bright and sparkly brass reeds, and you gotta love those pure, precise, longlasting stainless steel reeds). When I play rock and blues, I play Seydel. When I play country and folk, I play Hohner. Third place harps would be Rockets for their airtightness, bendability, and sound. They are the best plastic comb harps I've ever played. I find Crossovers to be identical in quality to MBDs, except for their price, which is why I prefer MBDs. I love Suzuki's construction, but their bends and sound aren't as good. Promasters and Manjis are the best, Bluesmasters are great affordable harps. Lee Oskars are great rack harps. Four types of tunings makes for countless fun and interesting variations, and the harps are affordable and abundant in shops, especially here in the UK. I particularly love Natural Minor harps. I've always been surprised they are't more popular. I'm not a huge fan of Solist Pros. The quality isn't as good as 1847s, like Fender Midnight Specials, despite have steel reeds, a wood comb, and Solist Pro coverplates. I can't stand 1896 construction. The nails are a massive inconvenience, and the lack of lacquering hurts my lips. The same goes with Blues Harps, but I love their construction and mellower sound. It's amazing how much difference side vents make. I've always wished for Hohner to make what I call a Blues Harp Deluxe. All they'd have to do is lacquer the front of the comb. Can imagine how awesome the harp would be? I've played a few custom harps in my life, but given the current quality of stock harps, I don't think I need them. Last point - best low harps are Manjis. Great quality, durability, tuning, and sound, and very affordable. Better than Thunderbirds and low 1847s. I wish Suzuki went below a Low C.

The Marine Band Deluxe is a very good instrument, as is the Seydel 1847, which I like because of its warm tone. Recently, however, I discovered that the Seydel Session Steel works best for me - but only when customized by Ben Bouman, who did a great job tweaking it - I just like the taste of steel and the smooth edges of that particular harmonica.

The choice of harmonica is, of course, a personal decision. For me, the MB deluxe is everything I'm looking for, especially in the lower keys. RockinRons is both an exclusive and highly reputable dealer. The service and personal advice is remarkable. Exclusive distribution could not be in better hands! Although distribution is exclusive in the U.S., there are no signs the model will be discontinued. It is readily available in Europe and Australia. If you like the original MB I think you will enjoy the upgrades that were previously only available from a customizer. Regardless... keep blowin....and Peace!

Finally, a review recommending the Marine Band Deluxe! Seems like everyone else on the net recommends the Crossover. I don't quite get the hype. The MB Deluxe is an excellent choice, and it costs slightly less than the Crossover, to boot. Hi Ronnie, how many of your harmonica's are coming to you to play in a straight from the box condition. If they do, how much work do you have to do to them to make them play nice. Hey Ronnie! I have to tell you that I have been doing a tons of research on harmonicas the last couple days, and found some great information out there. Some videos were of you on Sweetwater and on for Hohner itself, and which were super informative! I also read and listened to several other videos of other harmonicas and comparisons. Well, I got a Hohner Marine Band over the weekend that was on sale at our local music center, and I actually realized after on my way home, that it wasn't the Deluxe model, so I didn't open it....so they let me exchange today... which being that they only had a few other harmonicas to chose from there, I chose the Special 20...C....which is the only key that they had. I wish I had waited one more day though....because you just stated that you stick to D, Eb, E, and F with the Special 20's...LOL! I respect your judgement!! :) oh well...I just going to keep the Special 20 C anyway and compare all my different "C'" harmonicas... I am definitely going to order the Marine Band Deluxe soon...! Thank you much for another great informative video!! :)

I got MBDeluxe 2day and in my opinion it's great harmonica for classic blues, bcause chords are incredibly beatufill, but I have one problem: comparing Deluxe to Rocket I think, that Rocket's plastic comb is much more comfortable to play. Rocket is also tighter, it has, i think, 6 screws, Deluxe has only 3 and it really matters if you want to play overblows without any customs.

I agree the wooden comb on any MB gives great sound but one is so inconvenience to play up with TB technic. The other problem is brass reeds they gives great sound but have an aptitude to be brocken as well. So the semiwooden acrilic comb is the way to get fool advantage in harmonica's building. The comb of Suzuki and the reeds from...? Who does know?

I started out as a teenager with a Hohner Pocket Pal, which was a nasty, wretched-sounding thing that really fought against me and was a pig when I was learning to bend. As an inexperienced player who didn’t know better I decided to avoid Hohner like the very plague, and moved onto Lee Oskars, which were so easy to learn on. Bright, responsive and easy to bend. Also really durable. The reeds last a long time. I’d been exclusively playing Lee Oskar’s for over 20 years and then a few months ago I had some spare cash and was curious to try the Seydel 1847 Silver. I was expecting it to be harder to play - part of the reason I brought it, really. I was curious to try out stainless steel reeds, and thought the challenge would help me to focus and improve my technique. I was very surprised, however, how easy I found it to play. It’s slower to react so Ive had to adapt my technique and practice more for playing faster runs, but I adore the fatness of the sound. It’s really got some muscle. And it sounded so much better than the Lee Oskar when playing chords. Now that I’ve already been unfaithful to my Lee Oskars with my new affair with Seydel, I thought why not play the field a bit more? So I’ve just got a MBD to see how that sounds and feels. I’ve yet to try it - it only arrived an hour ago - but I’m looking forward to it. I’m never going to divorce my Lee Oskar’s. They are so easy to play and are great for fast runs and single- note playing. And I can’t afford replacing them all with either a Marine Band or an 1847. But I really appreciate how different harmonicas have different characters, depending on what I want to play. EDIT: I’ve just tried my MBD for the first time. Sounds good. Plays well without any need for gapping. But I some issues - and they’re quite significant to me. 1. The way the reed plate protrudes over the holes is sharp and not very comfortable on the lips. The rear corners of the cover-plate are quite sharp when I cup my hands around them. Not a problem with my Lee Oskars or 1847s. This is the least comfortable harmonica I’ve ever played and can imagine my lips will get sore over a long period of playing. 2. 8 draw wouldn’t sound at all. Rather than take it apart I gave it a good hard tap and then sucked as hard as I could to try and free the reed. A hair came out and went in my mouth. About and inch and a half long, belonging to someone who dies their hair red so definitely not mine! Whilst this solved the problem with 8 draw, it’s not very hygienic and not reflective of the sort of quality control I expect with a harp that cost this much. 3 It’s easier to play than my Seydel but I don’t find the sound it produces to be anywhere near as rich or satisfying. The low notes aren’t as fat and the high notes are squeakier and harder to play cleanly. 4.It plays about as easily as my Lee Oskar, and the chords sound richer. It’s also louder. I found that this is due to the side vents. When I covered them up it sounded the same as my Lee Oskar in the same key. The tone is a little warmer but not better enough to justify the difference in price. 5. I find the 1847 also holds its bends better, longer and more consistently for me. 6. It’s also tiny compared to my other harps and doesn’t leave as much finger-space to hold it with. I don’t regret buying it, but I probably won’t get any more. I’ll stick to Lee Oskars for responsiveness, brightness and ease of playing and Seydel 1847 for richness, warmth and muscle.

Special 20, Suzuki Manji, Hohner Rocket and Rocket low, Seydel Session steel powerbender and powerdraw tunings. Manji has the bite i like but the bends are off or harder or something. Plus the low end seems lacking a bit on the Manji on holes 123 i feel.

Marine Band Deluxe or Marine Band Crossover? Which one do you prefer? I do prefer the Crossover, it sounds louder (more powerful).

It’s the best to me. It has that original marine band sound, overblows well, has screws instead of rivets, rounded covers, sealed comb, and it’s only like 10 dollars more than a standard marine band. The best playing harp I’ve ever played was a seydel 1847 lightning but they’re just too expensive. I could get 2 deluxes for the price of a single 1847 lightning, and while I think the overall quality is marginally better with 1847s, the one thing it definitely does worse is overblows. Sometimes on 1847s you get squealing from the reed when trying to overblow and I’ve never had that happen with even the basic marine band, let alone a deluxe or crossover. I just got a key of F and a key of D marine band and I can overblow 4,5, and 6 easily with them right out of the box.

I tried a few different kinds of harmonica, but I now only play special 20s besides a rocket in low F. But trust me, if they made low tune special 20s I'd be all over that.
