Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I live in Herkimer, NY which is the neighboor town to Ilion, NY. After WWII, my grandfather worked at the Rem plant for 41 years. Occasionally Big Green would have employee only sales of overrun or display items (rifles, shotguns, ammo). My father told my grandfather to pick up 7mm rem mag 700 if one made the list. One day my grandfather brought home a BEAUTIFUL BDL in 8mm rem mag he picked for $85 thinking that 1mm isnt much difference. Oooof what a difference it is. Shorten the story- It made it to my cabinet and i am one of the biggest fans of this ctg and ever the tinkerman. My handloads send a a 200gr Barnes TSX around 3200fps and a 250 Woodleigh Weldcore RN at 3000fps into cloverleaf holes at 100yds. No signs of over pressure. Destroys beercans at 300yds. Havent had a chance to test the TSX on game yet. and probably never would need the 250gr Woodleighs. Truth be told it really is brutal recoil but not bad with a heavy coat. I do understand the obsolesence argument here, but the capability of this cartridge could never be questioned.

25-06 is the greatest cartridge of all time. My opinion, but she is the most underrated overlooked caliber ever. I’m glad Ron appreciates its and mentions it a lot I’ve taken white tail Mule Sheep Caribou And when I got to afford my elk hunt 3 years ago before Covid hit all my friends said take ur 300 or borrow my 338 like really a 338 for elk. More elk have fallen to 30/30/270/3006/25-35/ and or weaker cartridges. In the end I grabbed one of my 3 25-06, maple stock medallion x bolt with hand loaded speer 120 grains at 3100fps plus and one shot boiler room. He went 10 ft and died. Big bull elk. I will always love the 25-06 and love the new 135 grainers coming out. Just gotta get a 1:7.5” Barrel kr even a custom 1:8” and use that barreled gun for 120-135 and you 1:9/10” barrels for all else 87-115

I've never fired one but I have owned the cartridge since I was about 12 years old. The day an old gun smith gave me the 8mm Rem Mag he also gave me a 250-3000 and a 221 Rem Fireball cartridge. @Jacob McCandles definitely more bullet selection for .338 diameter. Dad was loading 225gr spire points and 180gr spires. Seen 2 deer killed with the 225s and its a bit overkill for whitetail. When our hint was stated as “1 of 2” I was thinking either 6.5 Rem Mag or their 350. My immediate dismissal of the long belted was the fact that Remington introduced/legitimized 3 long belted I believe: 7mm STW, 8Mag and 416 Rem Mag. Mr. Spomer threw me for a loop!

I owned an 8mm Rem Mag in the late 70's and loved it!! It was very accurate with factory ammo and was deadly on moose. It was my loaner rifle for those who were just getting in the hunting game and it was used on moose and elk out to 350 yds with great efficiency. I sold it to one of those borrowers in the early 80's as I had several other rifles that I was experimenting with. I got my price for it which was unexpected as it was in a Rem 700 BDL and the price was well over the MSRP. Biggest regret was even though it was numerically a heavy recoiling rifle the rifle fit me so well it felt more like my several 30-06's. Sad to see it might be removed from the inventory!!

The old 32 Remington was in the old 30 rem case along with the 25 rem. The 35 rem actually had a bigger case. They were Remington's answer to the 25-35, 30-30 and 32 win special. Chambered in Remington's pumps and semiautomatics, even a bolt action I believe.

I'm an 8mm fan. I couldn't decide between a 338 mag and a 300 mag and really wanted something in between. I picked up an inexpensive used Rem 700 in 8mm Rem Mag. I really like the performance. It's sort of in the same niche as the 338 Win Mag. The 325 WSM will almost match it's performance in a short action. I think the ideal 8mm would be somewhere in between the WSM and the Rem Mag. The old 8x68mm S Schuler cartridge would be just about perfect, IMO, except for the odd bolt face diameter that's bigger than our 30-06 size and smaller than our magnum bolt faces. That presents challenges in building a modern rifle in this old cartridge. I've considered doing a wildcat, probably based on the 375 Ruger, but shortened a little. Didn't have a good way to push the shoulder back. Now that the 7mm PRC is out there, all sorts of gears are turning in my head about maybe necking that up to 323. I do like my Big 8. I tamed the recoil a little bit by putting a McMillan Fiberglass stock on it with a LimbSaver recoil pad. Mine came with a 24" barrel and I really think you'd need at least 26" to get the potential out of this big cartridge. I don't really want to go longer because I like short, handy rifles. That's part of the reason I'm considering a wildcat design, or maybe just getting a 325 WSM and calling it good. EDIT: Nosler makes factory ammo for it. I've been shooting the 200 gr AccuBond at an advertised 3000 fps. I have some 220 gr Sierra Game Kings and some 220 gr Swift A-Frames I want to try reloading.

I remember when Remington came out with the 8mm. A cartridge I am starting to fall in love with the 8 is the parent cartridge of it. Thats the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner. Basically equals the 300 Winchester in performance but take a look at the BC of those 7MM bullets!! I don’t have one right this minute but the much higher BC on those 7mm bullets tells me it should really outperform the 300 at range. Would love it if you would go in depth on this idea of mine.

I had a 7mm STW for a while in a Weatherby Accumark, it was a nice rifle and shot well with heavy bullets. It kicked just like my .300 Weatherby though, and was just as heavy, they are both gone now. I found like you did, that the .300 Winchester Magnum had similar ballistics, and for me in a slightly lighter rifle it worked out well. For as far as I will shoot it's more than enough. We all have our favorites, that's the great thing about all the choices we have, and maybe a little bit of a curse as well. Enjoy that STW!

Just a couple of weeks ago I put together some loads of h1000 seated with a Hornady 166 GR a tip bullet and I think the coefficient on that was supposed to be up there around nearly 7 it was really really good but I'm not shot any yet and you're right that's 7 mm has some really good BC. I added a good muzzle brake to my model 700 went with a void stock which I floated the barrel and also went with a good recoil pad and it is easy to shoot now trying to build a good one 🤔

Before Winchester developed the 325WSM, I developed an 8mm magnum on an Improved 7mm Dakots case. I named it "8mm Elkhamr." It's an Incredible cartridge, fits in an 06 length action and will push 200gr Accubonds over 3125fps. It's a pretty flat shooting thumper! The downside is recoil. It's a fast, sharp, grenade in the armpit type of recoil. I do not have a muzzle brake installed on the rifle either. The rifle is built on a custom Rem 721 action, Stainless 26" match grade magnum contour barrel, Bell and Carlson stock. It's a fine shooting rifle.

For many reasons the 8mm/32 cal has never caught on, in America. 8mm RM done and dusted, 325 Short Fat was a flash in the pan, probably the 32 Special was the most popular and that has gathered dust for years. 32s and 35s just don't gain traction. A gunsmith in central CA, back in the 70's, made 2 matching custom rifles in 8 mm Rem-Mag for my Dads old boss. He was retiring and he and his twin brother were going to Africa on a safari. They got the rifles and a bunch of us had a big buried pig feed to send them off. They brought out the guns and let 4 of us, drawn names in a hat, shoot one round each. I shot them both, no one else wanted to do a second. It kicked like a mad mule of course, but it sure was nice to feel that power, in a weapon that cost more than my first house. The brothers each shot once. The next day we heard that our old boss was found dead in his idling pickup at the range, the truck had been started about the time we all left the range. The autopsy showed he had a stroke/aneurism, probably when he shot his rifle, his collar bone was also broken. He had stood around BS'n about the safari, no one ever saw any pain, and he had even sung a gospel song duet with his brother after a prayer for their trip. His brother took both rifles and put them away and never touched them again. I 've asked about them but someone said he had them destroyed. Sad story all around.

The pig, flew up in the air, landed right on it's back, all four legs almost straight up quivering for 25-30 seconds like it was hit by a lightning bolt! I'll never forget that hunt in Northern California on a private ranch near Ukiah in 1983, I think...What a memory, and what a howitzer of a cartridge!

I wished I was watching when this first came up. I knew right away it was the 8MM. When I got my beloved 7MMSTW I studied all about the 8MM with that being used as the parent case. It is weird to me that the 8mm isn’t more popular. It falls perfect between the .30 and .338. However there isn’t much between the .338 and .375’s either.

@@highplainsdrifter9631 the 40 may die away. I’ve never liked it as much as the 10mm. But I do like the 40 for what it does: fit in 9mm sized autos. I believe the 40(357 SIG & 9mm as well. They just give users more options. Say a heavy bullet in 40 for instance if that’s what they want). It also has good ballistics. Honestly I don’t believe it was ever meant to replace the 10. It was meant for what the 9mm is heralded for today[as it always has really]: performance with lower, manageable recoil. Hate to be long winded. Just felt it should be said. ALL of our cartridges are great cartridges but for different platforms and uses. The only Remington I remember when I was a kid, a .22 rifle, it was fun to shoot and accurate, but all ammo used was Winchester, used some 30.06 ammo. Loved the rifle though. There are 150, 175, 180, 195, 200, 220 and 250gn bullets for it, how many do you need? The talk of recol, any cartridge that has the energy the 8mm has will boot a bit, the .300's and the .338's with similar weight bullets at similar speeds, will kick about the same. The 8mm is a real killer and is a great 1 gun rifle for non DG big game.

Just look at that ginormous case! Wow, wow, wow. Then I touched off a round and it was OW, OW, OW! Not so much because of the relatively heavy recoil as it was the shape of the stock. That rifle slapped me up side the head so hard I thought I'd stepped into the ring with Joe Frazier! Just the first (and only) shot gave me a massive headache that lasted for hours. That rifle and the 19 remaining rounds was sold and replaced with a 340 Weatherby that, by comparison, was a pleasure to shoot. Had the rifle fit me better it may have been a life long companion rather than a one shot slam, bam, thank you mam. I couldn't get rid of it quick enough.
