Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Need more rifles. If the factory would make a box fed threaded barrel then it would make a real nice popularity surge. I know a lot of folks that want 1 rifle. A rifle that shoots steel most of its life but can also shoot elk and anything around that. But when you need to refer someone you don’t have a factory built 3006 to send them to.

Even growing up in the 60s/70s, the 30-06 had loads from super light hyper fast to heavy duty beast ammo. And now it just gets upgraded ballistics on top of all the "old" ones is mind blowing!. I love shooting my 1903 and Garand. Usually 150gr called for but they work great for my needs. It is great to see such a great cartridge really show what it can do.

In all honesty it comes down to over all cost and recoil. Reloaded might spend a few pennies more on hand loads. Off the shelf ammo and rifle platforms for the 300 cost more than a few pennies. For hunters in realms below 700 meters. Both are fairly similar in ballistics. Over 700, the 300 carries out flatter. It's all about cost to performance ratios. Below 700...save your money! Recoil and follow-up shots can be manageable with both. Depending on the platform.

With the same bullet, the .300 Win Mag only really stretches your effective range an extra 75 yards or so over the .30-06. Is the 300 win mag more powerful…yes. Is it really that big of a difference…not really. Unless you are shooting at extended ranges would the 300 win mag be a clear winner of those two.
@georgemcarthur488
@georgemcarthur488 Жыл бұрын
Oh for sure! I think he's just trying to put things into perspective that the old man isn't "That far" behind the 300. The only thing really holding back the 300 win is that it wasn't designed at the time for the looong slippery bullets of today. You could re-chamber a 300 win with a long throat and basically have the 300 PRC.

If you watch the longer video he comparing the modern loadings for a 30-06 vs the original 60’s era 300 Win Mag, showing how much technology has improved the 30-06. @georgemcarthur488
@georgemcarthur488 Жыл бұрын
@@dutch9357 I'm not sure what kind of witch craft they have going on at Hornady with their "superformance" ammo. But I'm betting they're using premium brass to compensate for 10,000+ psi for one shot maximum velocity. I've done the same thing loading hot 50 BMG. Testing every case for hardness. That's all I can think of, or they're not disclosing the length of barrel. Best I can do in a 22" with a 190gr is about 2600. Edit: I was mistaken. 2400fps in the 22". 2600fps in a 24".

When you hand load and really think about the best performance possible the old cartridges are still the best. The new like PRCs etc are only better with a very small selection of bullets. Example 7mm rem mag v 7mm PRC, load both with nosler bullets either 160 gr accubond or a partition,the 7rem mag is better. The new cartridges only perform better with long high BC bullets. Hard to beat an old cartridge hand loaded.

My 300 wm with a break on it is a 8 ish pound rifle and I’ve shot to 1200 yds. But we use great bullets. The NEW 300 will demolish the 06, and the recoil doesn’t exist with a new bergara or browning, or Christensen arms with a good muzzle break. The 06 is 100 years old. It’s just not a comparison

Or my Nemo AR chambered in 300 win mag. 18 inch barrel almost 10 lbs a little heavy. Nemo besides being a much sturdier platform than the AR10 and it has one of the best innovations with its buffer integrated into the BCG. The more substantial platform itself absorbs some of the recoil and the integrated buffer pulls the recoil down to Somewhere between AR15-AR10 levels without muzzle break or ported barrel. I feel safer with it when it comes to large predators like a grizzly or perhaps a BigFoot. I would think more effective against level 3 body armour and perhaps the UN soldiers wearing it. Priorities!

As a Marine sniper (20) years, there is sooooo much you can do in an .06 that just isn't possible w others. I can go out to 1600yd and drop anything 10" or larger. 300? Nope not accurate enough. I can shoot a .32acp in my rifle -doesn't make a sound, literally the pin is louder than the muzzle. I can hit pop cans 8/10 @750yd w .224 accelerators, drop antelope destroy minimal meat. .06 specialty ammo is over counter ALL across the US AND a lot of other countries. Good reloaded custom ammo, way better than all his ballistics he's reading, thats just factory bs. My standard for my rifle, 168gn SL match @3230fps POA is out to 457yd. Use the scope? Same bullet works in the 300 wm. I don't see what this comparison is supposed to tell. That a higher b.c. bullet loses steam at a slower rate than lower b.c. bullet. I already knew that. Swap the bullets in the loads being fired and all of a sudden the 300 mag has a 45 yard advantage in pbr. How many times do you gun writer types report the same stuff? I remember a spoof story written about gun writers by Jack O'Conner. The main chapter was writing an article about 3006 vs 270 for 100th time. I guess the firearms journalist trade has very little to do but push new products for the people who buy add space in thier publications.

Two good loads for .300WM to match or beat the 30-06. - Hornady ELD-X 200gr (.597 BC) - Federal Terminal Ascent 200gr (.608BC)

It's not hard for any load in 300 to beat 30-06 this is just showing how far the 06 has came in capability from the old rounds of the past. The good old Remington cb of the past was a pretty standard 300wm back when 300wn came out was a huge difference in power of the 06 the new 06 round is right there with it yet at same time new 300wm is again leaps above the new 30-06.

Do you really think so? It's velocities aren't much faster than the 300 Wby. Mag. that came out in the 1940s. The 300 RUM and 30-378 Wby. Mags are faster.

I think Ron does this to get the comment section going! 😂 if cartridges are being compared, they should all use the same bullet when they’re in the same caliber. All being 30 cal, they should all be using the 190 ablr with published max load data. First and last time I’m going to comment this as it does irk me a bit every time this is being done. 😂 one will get a vld high bc bullet and the other will have a round nose light for caliber bullet like Hornady did with the 6.5 creed against the .300 win mag! 😂

Yeah but that's not really a fair comparison if you're intentionally using an inferior bullet in the .300WM. Load the .300 With the same projectile.

This chart shows 2 things. The ol 30-06 is still king… but the only way to sell new wise bang cartridges is to completely neuter the 300 win mag to make the new cartridge look enticing at all… 😂😂😂

Can you use a 7.62 bullet in reloading a 30.06?
@ED-2.0.9.
@ED-2.0.9. Жыл бұрын
provided u're speaking of/meaning the projectile component only, you almost always can *with good data*. note tho', that you should only use .308 (perhaps some .309) caliber rounds, but Russian, Soviet, Warsaw pact style "7.62" is .311 caliber (+ or - a thousandth two occasionally) so don't source those for 30-06.

Let’s be fair here. Let’s load the 300 Win with the same high BC loaded in the 06. This comparison is skewed in favour of the 06. Not saying it’s not a great caliber which it is but I really dislike comparisons like this one.

@@WayStedYou he was trying to show the “modern” .30-06 is on par with .300 Win Mag hence the title. I submit a better comparison is the change one variable at a time, per the scientific method. Compare the same cartridge with two bullets, or two cartridges with the same bullet.

@@thepracticalrifleman Exactly. Ron was insinuating that the ole 30-06 hangs right with the 300wm. Well yeah its gets close if you pick the least impressive factory loading of the 300wm vs the best of the 30-06. Of course apples to apples is a different story.
