Before watching the whole video, I googled the case and am reading Dr Burks’ appeal which summarizes everyone’s testimony at trial. The fact that he still refused to say the medicine was the likely cause of the patients injury and subsequent death puts him even more at fault, to me. After experts got on the stand and proved it was, in fact, what ultimately killed Mr Allen that day, Dr Burks still said he wouldn’t change the course of treatment. Excuse me sir. Mistakes can be forgiven when we learn to do better from them.

They had to try that route of treatment because they didn't have the staff to start the dialysis. They are guilty. 22:28

I've done bedside dialysis care for countless patients, never once was a Nephrologist even in the building, nor was I at the patients side throughout the dialysis. I had 30 other patients. Currently, able patients do self dialysis in their own homes. Staffing is why this man died.

The defense doctors apparently think that because Mr Allen’s condition was deteriorating rapidly anyway and he wouldn’t have survived the hospitalization, no matter what, that it doesn’t really matter that this medicine killed his bowels which eventually lead to his death. I am amazed. He may not have survived this hospitalization if they had just been using the dialysis versus the Kayexalate and sorbitol, but maybe he wouldn’t have died in such excruciating pain while worrying about his “copious bloody bowel movements” and maybe that would have saved his family the torture of having to witness him in agony prior to his death. 😒

He may have stabilized, depending on the reason for the rhabydo, and if they could have resolved the cause. Had his death became imminent he would have had time to say goodbye and die with dignity.

I hope the transcript is not the official one, because there are some errors in both spelling & interpreting the words themselves.

no, what you're seeing on here is youtube's "transcript" - which is just another form of closed captioning for those who may need it. they can follow along. this is by no means the official court transcript, just AI closed captioning for KZbin which is automatically applied to KZbin pages.

This medication causes potassium to bind to feces which then reduces blood concentration of potassium

It’s a medication that is known to cause intestinal necrosis. The doctor didn’t explain the risks and didn’t explain that dialysis is a better treatment. The man’s colon died off from the kayelaxate and the doctors had to remove his entire colon and he died thereafter.

@aprillovesgolf70426 күн бұрын
@mainejournalnews8737 the medication is used as a potassium replacement, labs usually initiate the order. From what I understand, a "verbal order" was obtained. A lot of facilities have "Standing Verbal Orders", which means, "don't call the doctor, just administered if labs are within certain parameters". MD will sign off on the orders next time they do rounds. A lot of nurses are playing Doctor, with permission.
