I made this ash door for a roof deck. I haven't decided on a door handle yet. Thanks for watching

I was wondering the same thing. But then I thought he probably wanted solid vertical lines on both sides. Where as half laps would have had solid horizontals on one of the sides.

At 2:35 you reach both hands past the blade and grabbed your workpiece by the endgrain and pulled it backwards through the blade towards yourself. Why?

I was also wondering about this as well. I rewound three times to make sure that's what I had seen, but I figure he knows what he's doing. Still was unnerved to watch it though.
@841tl
@841tl 11 ай бұрын
There was tension released in the wood causing it to pinch down on the blade. You can hear the motor bogging down. He turns the saw off and pulls the wood back through the blade. It can be very tight and require two hands to remove it.

@@841tl When I first saw it, I was shocked, but later review showed that he quickly shut off the saw before sticking his hands in there.

This is such an amazing piece, and so much work that I was initially like ‘why aren’t those dominoes in the middle of each piece!? He’s being so meticulous!’ Then I realized he did that on purpose, so he wouldn’t glue the grain matched cross pieces in upside down. 😂

Very nice work. If I were to make the same door, I would use exactly the same techniques - although I think the dust extraction on my table saw might be better. I recently made a pair of “similar” grid doors for the entrance hall to our house. As all of our house is trimmed in European oak, the doors were the same. My stiles and rails were roughly 4” wide. As I wanted individual panes of glass - each one a different colour - I came up with a solution to fit my design. I used 2 widths of oak - one roughly 4.75” wide and the other 4” wide and each half the thickness of my final doors. I effectively made 2 doors for each side (therefore 4 in total) and glued them on top of each other. As I made one door with the rails full width and the matching inside door with stiles full length, when I laminated them together, they made the joints (dominoes) incredibly strong. The other reason, apart from strength, to do it this way is that I made ready made rebates for the glass to sit in. 1/4” thick glass hand painted by my wife was secured by strips. Not better, not worse but a different method for a slightly different aesthetic. As I’m the UK, I use metric for all woodworking but I’m unfortunately old enough to have been educated in imperial and so switch from one to the other without rationale.

Love this, I’m going to tackle something similar. Did you route out both sections at the end for both of the glass plastic to fit in place ? As in route out the whole area ?
@WoodByToth
@WoodByToth 11 ай бұрын
Yes I routed out the whole back about 9/16 deep for the 1/4 inch glass to fit. Then I routed a groove for the wood trim piece to go. I would have thicknesses the wood before glue up instead of routing the entire back out but I was not sure about the size of the glass and how many glass panel’s there would be. So I did it at the end
