A description of what pitch is and how to manipulate the numbers when framing and planning a project. Carpentry is mostly breaking down the elements of a building into simple shapes, making it easier to understand.

What is your channel? I also have carpenter math videos which are helpful and more specific. I have one about additions where I match the fascia heights with the new roof having different pitch and heal height.

You can also find difference in length by placing your framing square on a board - 6 on the tongue and 12 on the blade. Then mark the edge of the blade, and then slide it along the mark until it reads 16 (for 16" OC). Now look at what the tongue side reads. That is the common length difference of gable or rake studs for a 6/12 pitch. This works for all pitches, just set your square for whatever pitch you have.

I love math when I use on the job that I love. I hate math when teachers teach me in the school only because they are paid for it an it make no sense in my life. Thank you, Pro. Professional / Professor(teacher in Brazilian Portuguese).

You should have plugged in 24 inches instead of 2 feet. You have to use the same units of measure. Your answer of 1 was 1 inch not 1 foot. Try plugging in 4 feet and 48 inches and you will you get two different answers.

Oh, I guess it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Although I already did the test. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Only 4 questions. Also it was more like a refresher. Although I understood it well. Once I got back in the mode I'd gone over the notes I wrote in class. Pretty cool though, the math. Although I don't know what the results for the test are since it's still being marked. Hopefully it's good. :D

How is the slope factor used in cutting hip and valley jacks?
@uptokode
@uptokode 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll do my best to explain it. A hip or valley rafter sits at 45 degrees to a regular rafter (when looking at it from above and NOT factoring the slope. Keep it 2D in your mind). Therefore the RUN of a hip is 1.414 times longer than that of a regular rafter. If your roof is a 5/12 pitch then for your plumb and level cuts on a hip or valley rafter you would set your square to a 5/17 (run of 12 X 1.414). The rafters that hang OFF the hip or valley would still be cut at a 5/12 pitch for the plumb cut but then you have to bevel it at a 45 to butt into the hip rafter. Does that help at all? If not email me. kody@uptokode.com

I’m wondering does one side of the roof have to be half the size of your platform??? I’m planning on building a big playhouse the platform is 17’3” by 14’6”, anybody who knows the answer please reply and let me know. Thanks

No. Make 2 half roofs and lay them on the platform. It will lay as flat as the platform. Thats a flat roof.

Great explanation, however, what if your trying to figure out rise over pitch, when changing over from a Slant roof to a pitch roof, and the walls are shorter in the front and taller in the back?...;-)
@uptokode
@uptokode 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure how I can help with your question. Pitch or slope is always a ratio to rise over run. If you have a wall that’s say 50 feet long and it rises say 5 ft then that ratio is 5:50 (rise over run). If you want to know the pitch then go 5:50 = x:12. Cross multiply and divide. So 5 x 12 = 60. Then that answer 60 divided by 50 = 1.2. Your pitch is 1.2 over 12. Not sure if that’s what you were asking.

WHAT IS THE "PITCH" OF A ROOF?
@uptokode
@uptokode 9 жыл бұрын
It's the angle of roof itself expressed in a ratio of rise over run. A 3/12 pitch is a low angle and a 12/12 pitch is steep (45 degree angle)

Wait, are you doing inches or feet? Because 16" is very different from 24".
@uptokode
@uptokode 2 жыл бұрын
Rise over run is just a ratio. You can plug 16” or 24” into the equation and as long as you cross multiple and divide you will get the other half of the equation you need that is relative to the number you used. It can be in inches, mm, feet, etc .
