Hey I don’t mean to disrespect but I think the pitch is 1/3 and the slope of the roof is 4/12 again I don’t mean any disrespect I’m just here trying to learn more of math of framing roofs and using proper terminology for when I talk to architects and engineers

Hello Sam, this is an old video that was created when it was popular opinion that pitch and slope were the same and the fact that any standard dictionary gives slope as one definition for pitch. The explanation given in this video is based entirely upon the information that is given in the problem and the opinion that slope and pitch are basically the same. However, I do see from more current research that there are now different interpretations of what pitch represents. Some resources define pitch as the measurement of rise over run in inches per foot while others call this the slope and the pitch the rise divided by the span of a roof versus the run which would be the slope. With this in mind how you treat pitch may depend on the context. If you are learning about pitch for a class, then you should use the method given in your course textbook or by your instructor to find pitch. If you are learning about pitch for personal reasons then I recommend trying to understand both interpretations then keeping in mind that how pitch is interpreted may depend on the context. I hope this helps!

I came here to say this as well , math is right but the terminology is backwards . Pitch is the ratio of total rise to span. Slope is the ratio of unit rise to unit run.

Obviously not a chippy. 10/30 = 0.333 Inv tan of 0.333 = 18.41° pitch. 12 x 0.333= 3.996
