Roof trim fix

How to remove and install the roof trim piece properly.
When my car was wrapped, the rails were installed backward and the sides reversed. After a while, the trim pieces began popping up and I got around to fixing it properly.

I have about 8” pulling loose at the front of my Sienna. Would contact cement work or is that “too strong”?

I would recommend using the 3m tape as it's easier to work with, but a good contact cement should hold up fairly well. The key is to properly prep and degrease the area before applying the glue.

Do you recall seeing the clips on each end? My daughter's 2014 has a clip at each end.

Mine did not use clips. It's a 2006, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I've put silicone gasket, would be a problem for rain drainage?

On my car, there isn't a drain that goes anywhere. The water should move down the molding and flow off the front or rear windshield. Unless your car has a drain hole and hose, you should be just fine. If it does, make sure you don't silicone the hole closed.

I used 3M extreme auto tape. It's sold here under the "extreme", but it's Part number 5952 under the VHB in the states. Make sure you prep it by cleaning with a brush and using isopropyl alcohol above 70% or heptane or similar solvent to ensure proper adhesion. After 20 min or so (depending on temp) it will be about 50% strength and after 24 hours it will be at full strength.

What would happen if you just removed them all together Improper drainage or no.

They don't do much for drainage, there is no connection to the sunroof drains or body drains. I would imagine to a degree the channel directs water in a heavy downpour to the sides of the roof a bit, but the trim shouldn't effect that too much as the channel it's self does the bulk of the work. It would however look a bit odd as there would be 2 body lines missing from the appearance of the car. Unless mounting a luggage carrier or something similar up there, I'd keep it as is.

Your supposed to use windshield sealant to put the roof drip moulding on.

I don't see why you would, it is inside a formed channel. There is no opening inside the channel that opens into the car in any way. I can see using a urethane or poly sealant if it had an opening or needed to be sealed somehow. The 3m extreme tape that was used is more than up to the task and provides a seal if applied correctly. You can see my other videos if you are curious about the results. Have a look at the new interior video where I walk around the car, showing the reality of owning a wrapped vehicle. It has been in place after I fixed the mistake of the wrap shop. Since December 2019 it's been perfect. The interior video was shot about 8 months later, middle of summer. So while I do appreciate the suggestion for using windshield sealant, in this particular case it would not be needed. It may well however be valid on a different car model.

instead of using that crap tape USE THE 3M Trim adhesive it works much better in all climates one tube cost about 7 bucks

Awfully nice of you to assume I'm using garbage. I hope whatever is bothering you this evening gets resolved and I also hope you don't have to take out your issues on someone else. That's a 3m tape. It is the extreme version, and has higher rated adhesion and temperature ranges than what you have just recommended. You can order it by the roll. Feel free to have a look in the description as I linked it, and the specs /tds are available easily online. I'd kindly suggest doing some research on the product before just randomly declaring "It's crap and this one is the one you should use". I really do hope you have a great rest of your day, and are able to stay positive.

@@DJ_iLL_wILL I recommend you look up the specs on that tape. Over 30 lbs per square inch. I have had the trim off twice on the car for wrapping or painting. It didn't budge one inch, even in 54C heat and 70-80% humidity. The factory trim glue failed, where as the 3m has lasted years. I also use the same to hold all the emblems and spoiler on the car. It's not the regular 3m stuff you have pictured in your head when you think of tape. We use it on everything from signs to sensors at work. It's seriously good stuff.
