I also bought it used for 3.18 plus shipping and in "good" condition. It had a little dent on the cover but that was it. Glad I bought it!

The first two eves course are on at the wrong gauge hence that you are nail two eternits together then why not bring the valley laths closer to each other so you can dress the lead over them to make an upstand, it would be a lot more water tight and the best way when slating a valley in. Use blanks for verges to.

I used to roof this way. Then I discovered slate hooks, no need for nails or copper tags. brilliant. Only nail the verges. Rubber slates and hooks is the future. No broken slates. There is now a gas fired device for fixing the slate hooks. Never though I would see that.! No need for 3/4 under eave slates neither. Use continuous under eaves. 3m long. A good looking secure roof.

Lead should go up and over upstanding on side of valley. Torrential rain and snow can be drawn in
@michaelledford4751
@michaelledford4751 6 жыл бұрын
The only issue I have is how the lead sheet valley was installed ,why didn't you leave the lead another 3 inches longer on both sides so you could have formed the lead up and over your firing strips on the outside of the valley ? On tile roofs when you install chimney pans and valley metal you always turn up the outer edges of your metal work to prevent heavy rains from being wind driven under the tile ,I fully understand the true waterproofing system here isn't the slate tiles ,it's the underlayment system ,however it's good roofing pratice to prevent water from entering the tiles any chance you get ,you guys did a good looking job that should meet all warenty requirements easily but think about what I said about " rolling " your valley lead up and on top your strips ,in an area with heavy snow & ice loads having your leads turned up may be what prevents an ice dam from forming underneath your slate and pulling a valley apart ,investment seen it happen .
@SocialistChampagne
@SocialistChampagne 6 жыл бұрын
The valley batten (firing strips?) can't be covered in lead, as that's where the valley slates need to be nailed - lead valleys should only be nailed (with copper or stainless steel) at the top and not on the sides or bottom. There should also be a welt (roll). These guys have done a sub-standard installation by doing the bare minimum. A battened roofing system would be nearly impossible to have ice dams, as there would be no ice restricting the flow of water on the underlay to the eaves/gutter.
@Sitdown570
@Sitdown570 5 жыл бұрын
They cut the lead into 1 half metre lengths and then nailed them all together 😂😂😂 welt the lead on the edges all the way up the valley, wear gloves and use a dresser at all times, other than that it’s great 👍👍
@gaza19661310
@gaza19661310 3 жыл бұрын
@@SocialistChampagne the best way is to have upstand over the laths in a valley, just put the lead half bonded onto the valley laths to give you the other half to nail and while not effecting the lead so it can still contract and expand, but like you say they haven’t even bothered to put a welt on and this is a very poor job and will certainly leak.

If you don't do that area right there can be leaking which would be horrible for the homeowner and costly for the homeowner. Amateurs at best, probably one of those brickys that can put any roof on as well 🤦🏼‍♂️. Lead on to breather felt, any roofer would no why that’s a big no. Not to mention nailing through both pieces of lead. Eaves and dummy course shabby again roofers can see and know why. Personally I’d use slate and halves to complete the look but as the halves are tight under a verge I think they’re fine. I mean they don’t even look like roofers where are your pockets 🤷🏼‍♂️

That Eave gauge 🤷🏻‍♂️😂. Half slate up the verge is ok. Anything under 150mm then cut from blanks and rivet out myself

The lead in the valley is to short should of least taken it over on the striker batten, any rain will get under rot the batten. No copper nails used on slates If you was to cut a slate just above the nail hole you would of got the dummy course and your other slate with.

The title of the video is “slating” but clearly we are not speaking about natural slate, so which product is being used here ? Thank you !

I stopped using slate and half on verges! Due to the colour not being the same as normal slates and for some reason they faded quicker .

guys wrecks the first valley slate by wacking the edge of it with the hammer..... rough work. better to slate in one short from the valley all the way up and mark them all in one go with a straight edge, take them all off and cut them all.
