Being the cheapskate I am, I took a shovel that someone had tossed out due to a broken handle. Cut it short, made a little "ball knob" on my lathe for the cutoff end, and that entrenching device stays in the truck at all times.

Your videos are always great...I make checklists for all the appliances I take and laminate them and put a grommet on it and zip tie it to the appliance...even start up procedures for them in case the spouse needs to use them if you're away...everything from checking the oil and startup procedure in a backup gas genset to how to properly use my Ecoflow power supply...even a checklist for what I need to take...makes it quick and easy and it doesn't take up any room...the last thing I want to do is be uncomfortable in an outdoor environment...I ran out of propane out in the woods and it was miserable and wet with no rain gear...never again...might seem like overkill but it helped me through the years...fantastic video footage...the lake was a mirror of the sky...very cool...can't wait to see the new upgrades

A suggestion for the next blooper video. Take your sleeping bag, put it in the cab of the truck and use the heater to warm it up / fluff it up. I also think, sweatpants are warmer than jeans, especially inside the sleeping bag.

Wow. That was an amazing campsite. Those lake reflections when you first pulled up were incredible. As far as staying warm, you could boil some water and put it in your water bottle or mug and throw that in the sleeping bag with you. As far as your guy lines, you could use reflective paracord but that only helps if everyone is wearing a headlamp. I buy bags of glow sticks after Halloween and the 4th of July and attach them to the middle of our lines. BTW - I’m glad you had your empty bottle with you in the tent. LOL

HI Brian, I really enjoy your videos... I would suggest that you have a 12 volt cigarette lighter connection to connect to your power source... and keep in your tote box... because it seems as though you convert from 110 volt back to 12volt to use your diesel heater. You can go direct from cigarette connection to your heater without having to use a converter...
@BrianWatersOutdoors
@BrianWatersOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
This heater takes around 15 amps dc on startup. Most power stations only have a 10amp dc “cigarette style” output port. I’ve tried to run this heater on this power station and it cannot power the heater due to the higher amp draw, which is why I use a dc to ac converter👍🏻

You are just having an off day! Sweats over jeans every time, cotton just doesn't keep you warm like synthetics will. Here in the PNW, we live in our fleece during the fall and winter. Columbia has a lot of it on clearance right now, as well as other stores like REI and such. Perfect time to get some great deals! I'm liking the mods to the heater, I'm looking forward to seeing what else you do to your setup. I like to make kits for my camping gear, like a stove/fire kit with lighters, solid fuel tabs, ferro rod, lighter, etc, everything I need to use my stove or make a fire. I have a list for everything in the kit, and I replenish it as soon as I get home so it is grab and go. I have another kit for everything I need for cooking such as utensils, plates, napkins, blah, blah, blah, check the list and refill when I get home. It is really a stress saver and convenient that I can just grab the kits I need for that trip and know everything is there. 🙂

I was a Boy Scout, and spent a full career in the Navy, and still can't tie a Bowline. I tell people I'm knot dyslexic :) . As others mentioned, jeans/cotton do not do well in cold weather. Get some fleece, and an outer shell to break/repel the wind/rain when needed. Have never been a fan of sleeping bags, as I find them too confining. Spent some $$ and bought some 23zero Canvas Trail Blankets for us. Flannel-lined, and toasty. 78"Lx72"W, so plenty big.

I would like to also add a portable fire pit so that you can just bring the fire closer to where you are sitting. I know it is nice to have a fire pit but because there are people who put live ammo when they leave just to be funny or reckless. Please be cautious when building fires plus some people burn things in the fire and you might be poisoned with chemicals that you can't see or smell.

So why not use the SS2? Too wide for the platform? Where did you source the elbow and other parts for the exhaust? The one thing I don’t like is that output vent hardly protrudes from the heater so it’s hard to get a clamp on it to attach a hose. Also the SS2 doesn’t have an air intake hose at all like the smaller one, it basically has a vent opening on the side.
@BrianWatersOutdoors
@BrianWatersOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
SS2 is a bit wide, and the “feet” on it make it unstable. It would be fine with the straps though around the tire step. And yeah, I don’t like the intake design or the flange that’s tiny. I ended up “screwing” the 3” duct on the flange and it fed itself inside the box which holds it pretty tight. The hardware I bought is all in the links in the description.

Hey Brian great video as always I would encourage you to create a truck kit of all of the equipment you think you might need for your trips this is one of the things that I do for my trips. You're pretty soon on my God's prepared warrior channel I will do a vehicle kit of things that I keep with me all the time. Great video

From the beginning I was wondering why he didn't just keep his shell top and then put the tent on top of that. That would give you so much extra space protected from the elements. Weight can be the only reason I assume but if anyone ever heard him mention it please let me know. For me that's going to be my build. Mainly because if I need to take a quick nap when I'm on a road trip I can stretch out in the back of the truck instead of taking the time to open the tent.

Brian, I thought diesel heaters ran on 12v. If so you can run it on the solar generator? . Thanks for the great videos Frank
@BrianWatersOutdoors
@BrianWatersOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
They do run on 12v, but my power station (and 99% of all of them) only have a 10amp dc output. This diesel heater takes close to 15 amps dc on startup and it trips my power station. That’s why I bought a converter to use to plug it into the ac side of the power station, which runs it without any problem.

Your truck cap set up will be hard to beat as far as all-around comfort and ease of setup. Camper will be more comfortable, but more trouble setting up and excess gas usage to pull. I love my truck cap set up more than any method of camping. The only downside is when multiple family members are going.

Do you prefer the electric kettle over a Jetboil? I vaguely recall you maybe having used both so curious your preference.
@BrianWatersOutdoors
@BrianWatersOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
Both have pros and cons. Jetboil is good in warmer weather, isobutane doesn’t do well in cold. Kettle doesn’t matter if it’s cold or hot outside, but you need at least 500 watts of a/c power. Plus, with the kettle it cools down almost instantly so you can put it back up when you’re done and not have to wait for it to cool down. Jetboil is more “fun” to use though
