Not enough va what a great teaching moment, it just proves what i teach constantly... As a refrigeration tech, you must be an electrician as well great job dude.

Your vids are all so good👍 In a case like that I would have told them to have an electrician give me the wires I needed I will terminate them later also those fuses are the wrong fuses for 208 system On the defrost contact And correct me if I'm wrong you have the load of the defrost heater going through the heater safety Least I think that I understand that's a warranty job but you're the last guy there no one will remember the good you attemped to do when something goes wrong ....am 40 yrs in pal know this by heart like i said excellent vid

That's a Dangerous unit to Work on ! When u Shut Off the service Disconnect and You Still Have 208 High current inside the Panel ! Illegal as Hell too ! at a Minimum the unit Needs a Seperate Service disconnect For the 208 volt circuit. and Labeled accordingly ! To Make it Legal The Unit Panel Must Be seperated into 2 Voltages. a 480 panel & a 208 supplied Panel From That 208 circuit. someones Gonna Get Killed or injured with that setup. Bad news there.

time to put one in. one of those cheapo residential disconnects would work. it might save your butt. u need to be able to service it.

it would also tell everybody - whats going on when they see the second disconnect. everybody would say to themselves - Hmmm whats going on here.

8:49 First issue I see those are 40 amp fuses and those wires not going to be rated 40 amps, second thing I see is you could have eliminated that 440 Transformer and use the control voltage from downstairs but you would have had to change the heater wires to correct gauge as well as correct the rest of the circuit to match schematics. However the path you took was much cheaper the more cost-effective for the customer. Cost of copper at that length, plus the conduit is too small. I am wondering what full current load is on heaters.

In this case I would find the source of the secondary power source and disconnect it. your lucky you didn't get lit up on that late night call, it's dangerous. I would set it up for time off defrost 30-45 mins and fans on constantly. Not sure why they needed a 480 v service to begin with...

Okay I am moving just past the rookie stage but still way below you so I love your video very informative. Electrical is one of my weaknesses so I love videos like this so I've got one question that has me a bit confused. When you were looking at the wiring diagrams I noticed that you were using the one that stated it was for no evaporator contactor nor heating contactor in the condensing but on the the diagram listed on the far left is one for a unit with heating and fan contactors in the condensing unit. They still wired up things wrong bypassing the safeties but it looks like that's what the installers first started to go by because on that diagram you can see that h1 and H2 and F1 and F2 are wired up directly. Why wouldn't you go by that one or am I missing something?
@rookierefrigeration43574 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I could have used the one for the contactors. You are correct with that. But I honestly just went from the top of my head and wired it the best way I knew how with how it was already wired. Half of the stuff you do out in the field are fixing other people’s stuff and rigging stuff up.
@Kilroy238_4 жыл бұрын
@@rookierefrigeration4357 yeah you're right about fixing up other people's patchwork. I work in the tourist Mecca of pigeon forge and Gatlinburg and a lot of the refrigeration equipment has been rigged, rigged and patched then re-rigged and patched again. so I completely understand just go in the way you felt best with it I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing and skipped it purposely for a reason. That being said if the evaporator unit had been wired up using the contractors in the condensing coil method would you have been had to go back and rewire the controls for those two contactors or was that part already set up to function correctly?
@rookierefrigeration43574 жыл бұрын
Bill Benson the fans were already wired right, except for the fan delay. The heaters needed to be wired into the safety. What was really “rewired” was the defrost termination so it could terminate off of temperature.

This is the kind garbage that hurts people. Without that contactor being labeled as live when condenser disconnect off how many techs would have believed it was off? Ridiculous!

@rookierefrigeration43575 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's just a simple 35° cooler, doesn't need electric defrost, etc. But this is the way the store wants it, so we have to do it as best we can. I'd settle for air defrost and no heaters 🤣🤣
@OcRefrig5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. me too. use a digital a421. stick sensor in the evap. set digital at 15 degrees with a 25 degree diff and be done with it. Power fans directly off that 208 volt breaker other circuit and be done with it. Air defrost every time it cycles on the stat. easy peasy.

If you have a 208v circuit why not abandon the transformer for control and just run your control off the 208v. Already have the fan wires and heater wires up to condenser so there’s your 4 wires. Utilize those and rewire. Maybe I’m missing something. None the less good find and made the best of the shit storm u found.

That's exactly what we thought about doing. But since it's a new unit under warranty, we didn't want to mess with it too much. So we just did what we did to get it working right. But you are correct. We could have done that easily..
